Name of the game This deck has a couple of goals: out-value the competition with your commander Meren of Clan Nel Toth , recycling creatures that remove threats or protect you, combo to win the game, or the beat-down.

The Combo Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Triskelion combo with each other for infinite damage! The interaction goes as follows: remove all but one +1/+1 counter from Triskelion. Then with Mikaeus out, use the last +1/+1 counter to kill Triskelion. With no counters on it, Triskelion will be recurred with Mikaeus's Undying trigger. Having an infinite combo is a great way to close out a game, but people will tend to gravitate towards attacking you as a result. Fittingly, your ability to forge alliances and surreptitiously assemble the combo are essential. Shifting fear to other players, and working your opponents into lowering their defenses are necessary for pulling off the combo to win.

The Beat-Down If you don't want to immediately win with the combo, try beating down! Kokusho, the Evening Star and Gray Merchant of Asphodel are great recursion targets, allowing you to deal massive burst damage over, and over again. Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord turns creatures you might already be sacrificing for value into burn additionally! Wurmcoil Engine is great for going wide, while also being great for pulling you ahead with Lifelink.

Value A big part of Meren EDH is recurring cards for value. To get cards in the graveyard for Meren, we run Viscera Seer , Greater Good , Attrition , Bontu the Glorified and Phyrexian Plaguelord , just to name a few. Some of these cards also get Experience counters on Meren. Winding Constrictor also helps us ramp into reanimating large threats. Strong recursion targets include Spore Frog (for endless fogs), Caustic Caterpillar and Acidic Slime (for removal), Shriekmaw and Fleshbag Marauder for removal, Sidisi, Undead Vizier and Protean Hulk for tutors, Skullwinder and Eternal Witness to grab back any card and Sakura-Tribe Elder for ramp.

Utility There are lots of awesome utility cards included in this deck to provide an additional edge in battle. Golgari Germination provides a steady stream of chump-blockers, post-wrath defense, and sac-fodder for the deck. Crawlspace keeps go-wide strategies from taking you out. Demonic Tutor , Razaketh, the Foulblooded , and Birthing Pod can get anything you need from out of your deck, while Animate Dead and Reanimate can fetch creatures from any graveyard for immediate benefit. Even Buried Alive , a combo piece, is pretty good utility. It stocks the graveyard with answers and when combined with an Eternal Witness can be brought right back to your hand with a recursion effect.

Stax Though this isn't a super dedicated Stax build of Meren, the deck does have some locks in it. Once Meren is out, combining Golgari Germination for sac-fodder, Fleshbag Marauder or Attrition for removal, Spore Frog for defense, and Sadistic Hypnotist for hand disruption. Protean Hulk is good for tutoring up some of the deck's cheaper creatures that make for a good lock and provide overall utility, such as: Viscera Seer , Spore Frog , Caustic Caterpillar , Apprentice Necromancer , and Sakura-Tribe Elder .
