Why B/R over mono-black? You lose a lot of consistency, what makes it worth it? The answer:
Spike Jester
and Madcap Skills. They make this deck so much more aggressive. A T1
Rakdos Cackler
or
Tormented Hero
followed up by T2
Spike Jester
or Madcap Skills is 5-6 damage T2. T3 Mogis's Marauders and suddenly your opponent has lost around 3/5 of their life. You can't afford Mutavault though with this manabase, which certainly hurts.
THE CREATURES
Rakdos Cackler
: Premier one drop. An easily castable 2/2 for 1 is just what this deck wants.
Tormented Hero
: Slightly bigger drawback than Cackler, but it's still a 2/1 for 1 and heroic is nice with Madcap Skills,
Spiteful Returned
, and Herald of Torment.
Spike Jester
: An amazingly powerful 2 drop. Essentially a Lightning Bolt every turn.
Spiteful Returned
: Essentially a 3/3 for 2, but better since it gets 2 through no matter what.
Pain Seer: Generates card advantage and is a 2/2 body.
Mogis's Marauders: The reason to play black aggro. Makes all of your creatures unblockable haste in most matchups.
Herald of Torment: Aggressively costed as a 3/3 flying for 3, his drawback barely matters, and he can be bestowed late game to get that extra damage in.
THE NONCREATURES
Madcap Skills: Basically a Lava Axe every turn.
Dreadbore: Kills stuff.
Lightning Strike: Kills stuff and burns face.
SIDEBOARD
Doom Blade: For R/G Monsters, MUD, W/x aggro, etc.
Gift of Orzhova
: Bring this in for the aggro mirror to always be ahead in the race.
Mizzium Mortars F*** YOU Blood Baron of Vizkopa!!!!
Pack Rat: Best card in the MBD matchup if left unchecked. This one is kind of a matter of opinion of what it's best in.
Thoughtseize: Ya know, against stuff... This is good against Mono-Blue/ U/W and Mono-Black/ B/W Midrange/ B/R Midrange, but it really shines against control taking away that Supreme Verdict or Sphinx's Revelation.
