Suggestions are welcome. Especially for the Sideboard!
Hey there and welcome to Havenwood forest. If you look to your left, you will see some fungus, if you look to your right, you will see some fungus. If you look inside of the bus, you will see that we have now all become fungus. Porcini, Portobello, Shitiake, even a toadstool or three.
Welcome to Modern Thallids. I am CallMeClueless, 3rd Earl of Worcester and I will be your guide through this interesting world.
I designed this deck with the sole purpose of making Thallids viable, fun and just a touch faster than usual. So I am going to go over the engine, lands and win-cons, and show you how you too can win with fungus.
The Engine
These fellas are generally how you get rolling with the basics. You want Spores and Saporlings, these guys provide.
Thallid
- Your basic, run of the mill, 1 drop spore collector. Doesn't do much other than make more Saprolings, but he gets pretty tough with
Thelon of Havenwood
on board, and is certainly worth having one of.
Utopia Mycon
- The ideal turn 1 play. If you get this out and a land every turn, you are at least going to get your 5 drops a turn early. Which is very nice. Gets the engine running early, which is nice.
Thallid Shell-Dweller
- A solid body for 2 mana and definitely worth your time. The Defender and 0 power isn't as big a drawback as it seems, since you are rarely going aggro early in this deck. Solid for getting spores out and ramping up into your engine.
Sporesower Thallid - The big Daddy of the basic engine. He turns that 1 spore per turn into 2, and has very solid stats. Sadly only gets 1 spore himself, but he can get your little guys running much faster.
Paradox Haze - This is a big card, and may aswell be under win-cons aswell. 2 Upkeeps a turn is huge, and it stacks. 2 Upkeeps means 2 spores on every Thallid, 4 if you have a sporesower out. The ideal situation is to have this card out turn 3, with 2 other fungus already producing spores.
Win-cons
These are the ways in which we abuse this deck to make our opponent cry, and Thallids hard as rock. If you know what I mean.
Paradox Haze - We already discussed this. More upkeeps mean more Spores. More Spores means sales of anti-fungal topical creams go through the roof!
Beastmaster Ascension - Generating the counters to get this running isn't especially difficult, with the ability to go wide in this deck. Spawn tokens in your opponents end step for a nice attacking force in the next turn. Also works with Proliferate and Doubling Season.
Overrun - The cheap and cheerful game over card. Mass buffs to a mass board? Yes please. The trample is just gravy.
Sporoloth Ancient - Makes your engine cheaper and is therefore a good card. Combo this with Paradox haze and every turn each Thallid is producing a Saproling at the very least.
Mycoloth - Nom, nom, I eat tokens and poop out more. What needs to be said here? You can easily feed him, and he can easily fuel your entire board for days. RETIRED
Winding Constrictor - First we had Sporesower Thallid, then we had Paradox Haze. Now bringing you, the ultimate early game counter builder! The one, the only, Winding constrictorrrrrrrrrrrrrr! When they say Snek is Kek, you find them and brek their nek. Turn 1
Thallid
/
Utopia Mycon
, turn 2 Winding Constrictor, bam you now have a token on turn 3 to accelerate into a 4 mana play or to do some spicy things with. Just as a note however, this card does make it so that infect kills you with 5 damage, but you were going to lose to infect anyway, so that is okay. If you want to even try and beat infect, do not drop this on the board against them and for the love of god side it out.
Doubling Season - Oh me, oh my. If I have to explain this to you, then please, stop inhaling the Spores, for your own damn safety! However, for the fungus brained, let me make this clear. You have one farm, it produces food for your family. Now imagine you have two farms, built ontop of an Indian burial ground. They feed your whole family and haunt your neighbours. If you do not understand this, there is no saving you.
Utility
Psychotrope Thallid
- A very versatile shroom, can be a nice little storage spot for our counters, can draw us some cards. Just a nice card to have, and coming at 3 mana it fills in a nice spot in our deck.
Deathspore Thallid
- Your all purpose removal. This little guy is fantastic. At 2 mana he can be part of your engine early, but it makes him a big target. He gets through Indestructible and is your all purpose combat trick master. He can make the combat phase a living hell for your enemy and will open the way for some massive damage if given the chance.
Essence Warden - You make tokens, like, lots of tokens. You are also in a slow deck. You want life gain. Stupid amounts of life gain. Take this green Soul sister. Shh, no talking back. Take it. Good Fly Agaric brain.
Tezzeret's Gambit
- Your all purpose "I have nothing to do on turn 3" card. His crunchy profiteroles and card draw makes him an absolute dream for when you need to get the engine moving faster.
Abrupt Decay - Shoddy craftsmanship is so common in Modern! Make them pay for poor investments with spore in a can! I mean...with Abrupt Decay. Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord says this is the only Izzetiside for him!
Shamanic Revelation - Ever have the mid-poop epiphany? So do Spore Shamans, though they are mostly tripping on smaller, less fighty shrooms. For some reason they end up waking in up in a pile of cards the next morning. Don't ask me, Shaman parties are wild apparently.
