I'd be inclined to agree with you, fadetoblack1183, but also keep in mind that the Utopia Sprawl can be named for blue. I could add another one of the shock-lands (or even a fetch land).
thanks for the input! :)

Yeah, I was including it. I calculated you would need 12 blue sources to consistently cast your two blue cards by turn 3. You can reduce that by 3 due to Utopia Sprawl (they can only count as half because they need to be cast to use) and Elvish Visionary (card draw can speed up your land grabs), that still means you need 9 sources. Your dual lands only contribute 6. So you need between 1 (if you count Utopia Sprawl as a full source) or 3 (if you don't) more blue sources. I was splitting the difference and saying to add 2 more, either Island s or one each of the Breeding Pool and Hinterland Harbor . Again, this is just to make sure you can cast your blue cards by turn 3, you can leave the lands as-is but you won't be able to consistently cast them until turn 6. I use this site to help with mana-bases http://bopmtg.net/misc/mana-tables plus the numbers Frank Carsten and others developed for counting specific "engine" cards (mana dorks are 0.5 lands in the colors they produce, scry is 0.2 lands, 1 and 2 mana draw spells are 0.25 lands, higher cost draw spells are 0.13 lands, and I recommend scaling those down as the number of them increases). Don't know if this helps but it's where I'm coming from with my advice. Again, if it seems to be working, it's good and doesn't need changes. But if you see you have problems getting the blue components out, this may help :)

Ah, good call. When it comes to turn 3 plays you may be right; I don't always have the mana for that. I think I'll go up 1 shock and 1 fetch as the Harbour can prove to be a pain in the ass.
Truth be told, I only have 3 breeding pool on paper right now so that's a portion of why it's not there - no reason to not add it to the list, though. Thanks for pointing out that site! I'm usually pretty good with draw odds, but it's definitely going to be a big help in the future.

It is definitely a tremendous help, I find I am often too greedy with my manabase and either run too many double mana cards, or not enough land, or both. That site helps keep me honest and I find when i adhere to it (or at least close to it), I get more consistent decks. If you are feeling particularly bold (and have the cards) you could always run 4 Breeding Pool and 4 Misty Rainforest . Maybe drop one Forest for an Island too?

One thing to be considered is that many of the early game plays are actually not possible without Utopia Sprawl as well. That helps smooth over a lot of the issues, considering the way it interacts with the Arbor Elf .
Id be happy to take a look at your deck. I don't play Vintage much though, so hopefully I can give some decent input.

I suppose. The fact that they aren't possible without Utopia Sprawl
makes me want to find other cards that do the same or similar things to give you some redundancy.
February 27, 2014 2:21 p.m.
I tried looking into that - all I could find was one that drops for 2 and lets you draw a card with it. It could be useful, but the 2 cmc is really putting me off from it. Slows down a lot of the plays. Can't remember the name of it now.
Give it a playtest or two, though. There's the Staff of Domination combos as well - those ones happen just as often as the Intruder Alarm ones do.

Abundant Growth costs one and lets you add any mana to your pool AND draw a card. Almost as good as Utopia Sprawl . Manamorphose could be good too, turn your green mana into blue and draw a card.
I will definitely playtest it some more tonight.

Ah, that's the bastard I was looking for -- Abundant Growth . I like it, I really do, but I didn't have much success with it when I playtested it. I was always holding onto it for too long.
Manamorphose could be interesting, but I wouldn't want to see it in an opening hand. It can be a dead card. I can always play it for its draw effect, but that requires burning mana and taking the risk that my draw isn't going to be sometihng I need. I'd rather have a hand of 7 cards that I know are going to work towards what I need them to.

Haha, I'm with ya on that one. That's what the Staff combos are for, though.

There's a joke among my magic group that losing to a Simic deck is the worst humiliation ever, since most Simic decks are terrible. I will now make this deck and show them the power of biological engineering.

Awesome. Glad to know I'm not the only one who's running it! Hope you have fun.
Let me know how it does when you get around to it.

If only for the fact that my son loves Colonel Hathi from the Disney Jungle Book, I have to +1 the elephants. Well done, I love seeing a different sort of token being created ad infinitum.

You think of Umbral Mantle for your Elvish Archdruid ?
fadetoblack1183 says... #1
I would drop 2 Forest for either one more each of the dual lands or for 2 Island . I feel you need a couple more blue sources to guarentee you will have blue mana when you need it. You have all the green mana available in the world, but you need to hedge a little more for blue to make sure that part of the combo can go off. I could be wrong, would need to playtest it in real life to know, but that is what I came up with when I did my calculations. +1 from me!!
