Ah, Pillar of Flame and Forbidden Alchemy . I knew I was forgetting something! Thanks for reminding me. I'll throw them in the "Maybeboard" for now and then figure out where they go when I have more time to sit and think about it.

Vorxis says... #5

wouldn't Dreadbore go nicely in this type of deck? I know it's sorcery speed only.

October 25, 2012 3:34 p.m.

Rhadamanthus says... #6

Arg! I forgot that one too. It was another reason for wanting to build this deck in the first place. Thanks.

Have you considered Thundermaw Hellkite ? Tamiyo, the Moon Sage loves tapped creatures! I'd cut the Carnival Hellsteed for Thundermaw Hellkite .

October 25, 2012 6:37 p.m.

Rhadamanthus says... #8

I did consider Hellkite. The reason Hellsteed is included is because it really excited me when it was first previewed and I got to own all over everyone's face with the two I opened at the Prerelease.

I think I'll move Conscripts to the sideboard in favor of Hellkite in the main.

@Rhadamanthus

I'd have to agree, Carnival Hellsteed is a beast. Another suggestion I have is moving Dreadbore to the sideboard in favor of Think Twice . I consider Dreadbore to be a good sideboard card. The fact that it's a sorcery really narrows it's usage though. Think Twice will give some card advantag and has synergy with Desperate Ravings .

October 25, 2012 7:53 p.m.

Rhadamanthus says... #10

For now, I'll add Think Twice to the Maybeboard. Once I get a physical first build together and play some games with it, I'll bring it into the deck if I feel like I need the extra card draw. Thanks for the tip.

OrgasmAndTea says... #11

Can I ask why people think Desperate Ravings is better than Think Twice ? I'd have thought it was the other way around. I'd like to recommend Charmbreaker Devils . I'm trying to make a Grixis deck works as well, and the Charmbreaker frequently pwns in that deck.

October 26, 2012 1:37 p.m.

Rhadamanthus says... #12

Both cards give you the same number of extra cards in your hand for the same total amount of mana. However, the benefit of Desperate Ravings is that it lets you go deeper into your deck, meaning there's a slightly greater likelihood of any given card appearing in a game. What determines whether a player prefers one over the other is whether he thinks the discard is a worthwhile tradeoff for that deeper dig.

If I were to build a deck with Charmbreaker Devils in it, I think it would end up looking pretty different. There's always the chance this deck could end up going that direction in the future, though.

KrazyCaley's Bolas for a Better Tomorrow is the generic Bolas deck. However, it is not the best path for a Grixis deck. Grixis's strength is in resource denial. My friend and I have built a very strong deck focusing on denying resources. Take a look and hopefully it gives you a few more ideas. grixis superfriends

Ertl - That link goes to a different deck. This is the one you mean: deck:grixis-superfriends-29-01-13-1

WOAH!!! weird. I just copy and pasted my name. Thanks. I hope my deck can give you some ideas and help.

Your deck is quite filthily good, but I was trying to build a bit more budget version of Grixis with this deck, and alas, the budget I had for it would not have accomodated your build.

Also re: formatting - The reason the link doesn't work is because there is another, earlier deck named Grixis Superfriends. To see how to specify YOUR version, click Formatting Tips the comment box, and then Formatting.

In relevant part:

"To tag a deck, use this syntax (note that you must type the slug name of the deck to avoid accidentally linking to another deck with the same page name): Dominus - Dreamcrusher Edition (which produces Dominus - Dreamcrusher Edition)."

Budgets I can respect. I happen to have a full collection of Ravnica Duels from back in the day, so that's why I have them all up in here. I've also been doing a lot of trading recently. There are several incidental rares and uncommons that people don't seem to have in their binders for some reason, but right now the only big things I still need to get are 2 of the Jaces and 1 Rakdos' Return. Your deck pointed out the fact that the creatures I had in here before were holding me back from one of the coolest parts of what this color combination can do.

I completely understand budget decks. That is all I could build for the longest time :P However, it should not stop you from running some of the strong commons and un-commons like Forbidden Alchemy , Tragic Slip , Pillar of Flame , Ultimate Price , and Nephalia Drownyard (it's a cheap rare). Cards you can replace are Cyclonic Rift , Counterflux , Barter in Blood , and 1 of the Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker . The reason for Counterflux is that you already have 3 Syncopate , 2 Izzet Charm and 2 Dimir Charm that can counter spells. Cyclonic Rift is a very neat spell, but I have found it to be more of a stall than a removal. A well used Ultimate Price or Tragic Slip seems to work better(same for Barter in Blood ). With Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker being an 8 drop, having two of seems to be counter productive. The last thing you want is to draw him before you can play him. Plus, one seems to do the job with draw cards like Think Twice and Forbidden Alchemy . I know she is hard to get, but IF YOU CAN... really try to get as many Liliana of the Veil as you can. Same goes for Jace, Architect of Thought . Great budget Grixis btw. Please remember to +1 my deck if you liked it :)

Rhadamanthus says... #20

Though Cyclonic Rift is one of the cool pet cards I wanted to try out, I think you're right that I just need to be playing straight removal instead. I only own 1 Liliana of the Veil right now, but I might be able to talk some people into trading. My big chance for that will probably come at the GP Charlotte. I'll do some deeper thinking about the list when I get home from work.

I would like to suggest Chandra, the Firebrand .... She is quite nasty with this type of deck and can be a really nice card for late game too! I also suggest Past in Flames ... When I was playing Grixis Past in Flames was what won and saved me tons of games... Since you are running so many Charms and things like Dreadbore , it could be put to great use! If you are putting Creatures in your Sideboard I would put Snapcaster Mage and/or Thundermaw Hellkite .... Great deck by the way! +1!

Rhadamanthus says... #22

I have thought about Chandra. Though she can be situational, in those situations she's a really good card. However, I really should try to build and play this deck in real life a few times so I can see how often those situations will actually come up. That will tell me whether I want to play 0, 1, or 2 copies.

Right now I think Mystic Retrieval is doing the important part of the work that Past in Flames would in its place, but I'll try to keep your suggestion in the back of my mind while playing.

February 12, 2013 10:09 a.m.

Ok! I appreciate you taking these suggestions into consideration... You seem very experienced so if you could please take the time to look at my Budget Jund deck: deck:i-hate-jund-but-if-the-shoe-fits-wear-it and make some suggestions it would be much appreciated and it would help the deck out a great deal! Thanks!

I have a couple of questions about this deck. First off there is no ramp here such as the Chromatic Lantern and Gilded Lotus which would seem key to getting out Bolas. Maybe with the Superfriends theme Bolas isn't the end all be all but maybe that is something to playtest with. Second I'm not sure that the 3-2 split of Syncopate and Counterflux is right. Jund is very popular and with the possibility of turn two Farseek and turn three Keyrune you will be very far behind on mana and Syncopate becomes much worse. I would reverse it and go 3 Counterflux and 2 Syncopate. Third, I see very few ways to interact with your opponent on their turn. In particular I see few instant speed kill cards. I think Murder or Victim of Night has a place here. Maybe - 1 Dreadbore -1Mystic Retrieval and -1 Think Twice and +3 Murder.

Rhadamanthus says... #25

Regarding the lack of ramp: I didn't really feel like I was missing out on having things to do by not having something like a Chromatic Lantern or Gilded Lotus to help me along. With all the rest of the cards in the deck doing their thing, if I draw Bolas the game will go on long enough to let me make the land drops for him (Jace, Architect of Thought helps a lot here).

Your other comments were things I noticed at the FNM but didn't think to list in my update about it. Because I like the "exile" part of Syncopate, I'll make the 3rd hard counter a Dissipate. Since Devour Flesh turned out to be so great each time I brought it in, I'll make that the mainboard instant-speed kill. Mystic Retrieval has turned out to be pretty important, so I'll go down to 2x Barter in Blood instead. I'll move that Barter, the 4th Dreadbore, and the 3rd Syncopate to the sideboard for now.

Thanks for the help!
