Mk. 3.4 —Dec. 16, 2016
Cut: Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir; Spike Weaver; Farseek; 2 Forest
New: Kiora's Follower, Containment Priest; Land Tax; Ash Barrens, 1 Island
Teferi didn't turn out to be quite as effective as I had anticipated, mostly because holding up five mana through an entire round of turns is a tall order, and the heavy colored cost doesn't help. Spike Weaver worked sometimes, but it was very mana intensive and just wasn't as useful as I hoped it would be. In their places I added Kiora's Follower and Containment Priest. Roon's flicker ability is a key element of the control side of this deck and I often wish I had more activations so I could neutralize a second attacker or get another ETB trigger out of one of my value creatures. Kiora's Follower is cheap and untaps Roon for free at instant speed, but even without Roon in play, she can still untap literally anything else. Containment Priest seems a little counter-intuitive at first, as she shuts down my own blink engines, but she also turns Roon into a kill stick, and after playing a game where my opponent dropped one of these I realized she hurts everyone else a heck of a lot more than she hurts me.
I'm also adding a bit more blue to my mana base because I never seem to have enough and needing UUU comes up surprisingly often (Roon + Counterspell, Deadeye Navigator + activation, etc). Finally, I'm trying out Land Tax in place of Farseek; the steady stream of lands provided by the former might outweigh the single land provided by the latter, even if the Tax puts them in my hand instead of right on the battlefield.
