Mk. 5.4 —Nov. 10, 2017

New – Hashep Oasis; Island; Fact or Fiction; Dig Through Time; Jace Beleren; Garruk, Caller of Beasts; Oracle of Mul Daya; Wickerbough Elder; Cyclonic Rift

Cut: Consecrated Sphinx, Lotus Cobra, Enlightened Tutor, Carpet of Flowers, Time Spiral, Harvest Season, Tamiyo, Caustic Caterpillar

The last iteration of the deck was simply too powerful for my playgroup; I won the last six consecutive games and have made the conscious decision to try and reduce the power level of the deck by slowing it down a bit and moving it more towards a midrange-y feel. As such, I have taken out most of the mass card draw (Consecrated Sphinx, Time Spiral, and Jace, the Mind Sculptor) and some of the fast mana (Lotus Cobra, Carpet of Flowers, and Enlightened Tutor, which gets mana rocks). I also brought back Wickerbough Elder (over Caustic Caterpillar) to reflect this theme. In addition to these cuts, I took out Tamiyo and Harvest Season; both have powerful payoffs, but both require substantial setup in order to be effective and are extremely situational.

To replace the cut cards, I brought in some more lands, a change which I probably should have made a while ago. Hashep Oasis taps for green on turn 1 while also providing colorless mana for Displacer, and my fetches and ramp spells sorely need the second Island. To replace my card draw spells, I added Fact or Fiction, Dig Through Time, Jace Beleren, and Garruk, Caller of Beasts, which I hope will be strong but not as busted as Consecrated Sphinx. Finally, I brought in Oracle of Mul Daya for more land ramp and Cyclonic Rift for board control; both are fantastic but not busted, and they reflect the direction I want to take this deck quite accurately.
