I wasnt talking about changing crabs for orbs. I believe both are quite strong and probably should be run of as four most of the time. Surgical extraction is indeed a good tech against many decks, but as a tech it should still work on the side deck. Most Emrakul decks run only 1 copie of him anyways. Im also not comparing thought scour with visions, neither am I saying you should replace those as both work quite different. Cantrips are played for speed and conscistency, A big draw spell like visions is played for value. Long story short, play cantrips, those are good ;D

Replacing Tome Scour with Thought Scour sounds good to me. Getting back a card is worth a lot.

Set Adrift might work better for removing Leyline since it places it on top of the library and can then be milled and surgically extracted

@frogkill45 and i can delve some cards if they play it later in the game. That seems pretty good ill test it out

It's also immune to Dispel and Inquisition of Kozilek, which is great if all you want is answer a Leyline. On the other hand, you will never have the utility of being able to disrupt some combo at instant speed.

@Emzed ah yes this is true i like the thought of that. Also the two people i played that used it said they probably wouldnt of played it again if i made them pick it up.

What do you guys think about Dream Twist?

September 19, 2016 10:08 p.m.

Emzed says... #8

Dream Twist mills a total of 6 cards for 3 mana. Tome Scour is 5 cards / 1 mana, Breaking 8 cards / 2 mana, and Mind Funeral something like 8-15 cards / 3 mana. Dream Twist clearly can't compete with the other cards' efficiency, so unless you can find another upside that makes up for that, it's simply not good enough. Most games come down to racing the opponent, so all you want is to get the maximum number of milled cards out of your mana, and Dream Twist doesn't do that.
Btw, Shelldock Isle can be very useful for this archetype, have you considered it before? My suggestion would be to add 1-2 of them, you don't need multiple Sunken Hollow anyway.

@Emzed thatnks for the comment! I see what youre saying about Dream Twist, the only reason i was considering it is during the few games that i run out of cards i could still cast that, but i dont run out very often. Also i may remove one sunken hollow for a shelldock isle that card seems decent.

What do you think of Laboratory Maniac in the sideboard against decks that play Leyline of Sanctity? In my mill deck I didn't get the chance to playtest, but it was a thought because you're opponent can mill to get a better chance for Leyline of Sanctity. You have to draw it in order for your deck to work. You simply mill yourself until you win the game with Laboratory Maniac. Any thoughts?

The only thing that bothers me about this deck is, the amount of what would normally be considered sideboard cards in the main board.

A one copy of Echoing Truth or Crypt Incursion won't do anything for you if you're in a pinch and don't draw it. The odds are simply too low to justify having them in the Mainboard at all, if you're just running one.

If I may offer a little advice from playing mill competitively. Winning isn't necessarily in the cards you bring, but how you play those cards on a bigger-picture level.
- Use your wit. You're a damned Mill player; you're smart, perceptive, and determined. Go as fast as you can game one. Full.throttle.mill. Basically, inventory their library as you mill them, to see what you're up against, next game. If you win, great! If you lose, meh, let them have it, it psychologically puts you at an advantage that they think they have easy wins coming. And you'll know exactly what SB cards to put in.
- The sideboard (SB) is where the deck proves it's worth. Your skill at defense and to ensure victory, come from here games 2-3. This, you probably already know; but I must say to lead into my next tidbit.
- Know the meta. If your meta is Modern, know the problem cards in every color that defend against mill. Wheel of Sun and Moon, Leyline of Sanctity, Aegis of the Gods, Redirect, etc.. And use a mix of cards that nix the offense and newly added defense of your opponent. A few well chosen cards, in correct quantities, can make mill a force to be reckoned with.

Mill it over ;). If you need some SB suggestions, try to slowly start collecting 3x Ensnaring Bridges, Leyline of the Voids, Hurkyl's Recalls, Leyline of Sanctitys, and perhaps the Crypt Incursions.

Hope this helps a little.

@Pheardemons i dont know how much i like labratoy maniac because id have to wait to start milling myself until i draw it, because if it just gets milled i lost anyway. Also it would have to take up at least 2-3 SB spots.

@TheSurgeon thank for the comment as always! About SB cards in the main, im prolly gunna take out the swamp frm the SB and move the 3rd Echoing Truth to the side and out in the 4th Breaking. But i like the crypt incursion in the main because a lot of players around me are aggro (all using red + other colors) or tron. And the life gained if i draw it is nice but if not i can still win by milling. The other card ppl dont likebis the x4Surgical Extractions but i love them, and treat them as control cards and they have won me some games now simply by removing strong cards turn 1 or 2. Ill think about your SB suggestions after this friday night so i can have a better feel to what i need to change and prep against!

Ill keep yall posted about my record this friday!

Surgical Extraction is typically more of a sideboard card, but it's also a "0 mana - mill 3, see their hand and deck" with potential to grab something out of their hand, and sometimes the effect is game winning against combo. Not sure if that justifies that many copies in the main deck, but it's certainly a close call. Echoing Truth, however, should only serve as insurance against cards that bother you in games 2 and 3, it's just never a good card in game 1.

@Emzed thanks for the comment and thanks for seeing surgical extractions potential! And i do agree i will be putting echoing truth into the side with the others

@Emzed also almost forgot, the x4 of them is to make sure i draw one or two early. Then after the first or second i typically pick a card they havent used yet. For example i was playing grixis delver and turn one i had two in my hand and a Tome Scour, and i hit Lightning Bolt and Tasigur, the Golden Fang, and they scooped after that

September 21, 2016 5:48 p.m.

Emzed says... #16

Sure, but don't forget it can backfire: Scavenging Ooze or a delve card like Become Immense can counter Surgical Extraction by removing the target card in response. Also drawing multiple "0 mana - mill 3"-cards against something like Jund or Abzan might just be too low impact.

delusiions says... #17

@Emzed i see what youre saying and where youre coming from, but i havent seen either of those decks at my game store at fnm. Ive see grixis, different tron builds, gr valakut landfall, and difderent aggro builds all using red. Oh and a this dudes dope ass dredge deck. But dredge is just weak to me cuz hes milling himself.

September 21, 2016 8:17 p.m.

Emzed says... #18

I haven't played the matchup myself, but are you sure you are favored against Dredge? You seem to play right into their plan, giving them a great set-up for a quick swarm of Bloodghasts and Prized Amalgams. But now that i think about it, having 5 graveyard hate cards main deck counters that pretty well, right?

September 21, 2016 8:33 p.m.

delusiions says... #19

Yeah you just wait for them to pick one that helps em win and them you just sugical extraction that one.
