Intet, The Hipster

Commander / EDH*

Merlot

This is a preliminary list for a French 1v1 (Duel Commander) list using Intet, The Dreamer.

When it comes to 1v1 EDH, I am notorious for not wanting to play established generals unless I came to them first; I'm a total MTG hipster in this regard: I played both Edric and Derevi BEFORE they were cool (and got banned).

I am always keen to play U/G, and I've always wanted to play U/R/G, but the available generals never really did it for me. I like Animar, but I don't like playing combo. I like Maelstrom Wanderer's effect a LOT, but I don't like playing glass-cannon type decks (MW is easy to disrupt, because you KNOW what they're trying from the start).

My style preferred style of play has always been firmly Simic: I like utility effects that increase my resources (Coiling Oracle is my favorite card of all time), and I like being able to play control if I need to.

So, in true hipster fashion, I've decided to make a go of Intet, even though MW and Animar are more established and conventional.

The idea here is to play early ramp while maintaining tempo with cheap conditional counters if necessary. Ideally, I want to be able to cast Intet on turn three or four against a deck I know can't deal with him, or, in most situations, turn five with counter backup.

The deck is heavy on control and countermagic, which differentiates it from most MW and Animar decks. I'm not playing as much ramp as MW or as many creatures as Animar, and instead am looking to be able to play the long game if necessary.

The deck is loaded with effects that re-arrange the top cards of the library, so that we can get the best value out of Intet's ability.

In a perfect world, we're going to be able to use Personal and Mystical Tutor to chain together a couple extra turns with Time Warp and Temporal Mastery (I considered [c]Time Stretch[/c], but I feel like it's just too greedy, and will never be hard-castable if my back's against the wall), which should mean that we can kill our opponent very soon after Intet swings for the first time. We can also use Worldly and Sylvan Tutor to find a useful fatty (currently Primeval Titan and Knollspine Dragon).

There are lots of possibilities for Intet-based finishers: [c]Furyborn Hellkite[/c] is an intriguing idea, because its bloodthirst will always trigger. However, I'm picking [c]Knollspine Dragon[/c] for now because being able to refill my hand by 6 or more is just way too strong to pass up in a deck that's heavy on control. I was originally using [c]Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger[/c] as well, but I feel like, if I've managed to swing Intet into my opponent and have gotten off a Worldly Tutor, then V-Clex is just win-more, and Knollspine is better because it can refill my hand.

Other potential options are [c]Balefire Dragon[/c], but Knollspine just seems better than all of these, given what the deck is trying to do. My LGS uses 10-card sideboards for 1v1, so some of these creatures may go in the board to bring out against certain types of decks (Balefire would be great against swarm or token decks, to be sure).
