Oh, about the dredge deck that I'm building - Can the functionality of the zone that the Noble starts in more closely mimic that of being in the hand? For example, can I dredge Loam or discard it to Faithless Looting?

The main description says this is supposed to be a format where top-tier decks net Turn 5 kills, and unfortunately, I believe I have found a deck that very consistently nets Turn 4 kills and sometimes kills on Turn 3 that does not focus on any one card. I bring you Noble Burn.

A ton of the best burn is sadly common, and this includes sluggers like Lightning BoltMTG Card: Lightning Bolt, Chain LightningMTG Card: Chain Lightning, Rift BoltMTG Card: Rift Bolt, Lava SpikeMTG Card: Lava Spike, and FireblastMTG Card: Fireblast. The uncommons are pretty interchangeable--you can run anything from Hellspark ElementalMTG Card: Hellspark Elemental and Flames of the Blood HandMTG Card: Flames of the Blood Hand to Volcanic FalloutMTG Card: Volcanic Fallout and Barbarian RingMTG Card: Barbarian Ring. If a developed Noble meta ever comes to be, Price of ProgressMTG Card: Price of Progress may become a valid option.

Part of this deck's success is its choice of Noble, Goblin GuideMTG Card: Goblin Guide. This deals 8 damage by Turn 4 by itself if left unchecked, and tends to deal at least 2 by the time it is dealt with. Always, always lead with this card on Turn 1 if you want to kill by Turn 4.

I don't know how to turn RDW into a Turn 5 kill archetype in Noble. Even if Goblin Guide is banned, other sluggers like Grim LavamancerMTG Card: Grim Lavamancer or Figure of DestinyMTG Card: Figure of Destiny may rise to take his place. There are also way too many common 3-damage-for-1-mana spells. RDW may need a ton of bans to stay in check.

@mandroid, you may cast Life from the LoamMTG Card: Life from the Loam from Command Zone and later choose to use its dredge ability to return it to your hand, yes. However, you may not discard it from the Command Zone.

So just a suggeustion:

In order to improve the quality and lifespan of the format, I propose a rules change which lets your Noble interact more as though it were in your hand. This would have the added benefit of people being able to use things like the Myojin & Ink Eyes. Perhaps even just draw 6 instead of 7 and have your Noble card put into your hand before the start of the game?

What do yall think? Too broken?

making these decks is far too fun to be this cost effective

It's not that it's broken... the problem is (imo): 1 simple DuressMTG Card: Duress would kill your strategy. Simple discard is too strong and common in my opinion. The easiest change would be, that the Noble-Card in the Noble-Zone counts as a 'Noble-Hand' side by side with your normal hand. Except: It exists only as long as it has the Noble card in it and is handled similar to a zone. Aka: Casting a card from the Noble-Zone counts as casting from hand.

(A very cool thing would be if you could choose what 'place' the Noble zone is. Nothing would change except it may count as 'Played from (...)'. For example graveyard (Hello Haakon, Stromgald ScourgeMTG Card: Haakon, Stromgald Scourge!), hand (Hello Myojin of Life's WebMTG Card: Myojin of Life's Web!), library (Hello weird Panglacial WurmMTG Card: Panglacial Wurm no one knows / not the best example, I know, but it makes the point), etc. The Noble-Zone is exacptly what it was, but casting the card from there allows you to decide from 'which direction' it comes. What do you think?)

The longer I think about it the more I like the idea posted in brackets above. It stands in line with keeping it as flexible as possible and allowing all the cards hereby which are useless as a commander. A good middle-ground imo.

I just think that maximum functionality should be built into the ability to play your Noble (So I think I should be able to discard Loam to Faithless LootingMTG Card: Faithless Looting) in order to extend the metagame to every possible Noble. That will probably have to increase the ban list in the end, but I think it would be more than worth it in order to make as many Nobles as possible viable. Really though, Loam is probably still good enough as is, but there are plenty of other Nobles that would seriously benefit from those kinds of rulings, like Haakon, which you mentioned. Also, since this format has serious consistency in the Noble, I wouldn't be surprised to see lots of yard hate in people's main boards in order to hate all of the nuts yard combos like Loam & Haakon (infinite kill spells? yes plz)

April 10, 2012 11:54 a.m.

mandroid says... #19

Also, choosing which zone the Noble zone is is a great and elegant solution. Another potential solution would be some ruling like "Cards in the Noble zone are considered to be in the hand of the owner of the card." That would allow maximum functionality for things like Faithless LootingMTG Card: Faithless Looting while setting a standard about where the Noble card is (because honestly, starting with Loam in my yard would be potentially way too good (not to mention Haakon starting in the yard). I'd have turn 1 pure setup with Looting)

This is great, my friends challanged me to build a deck out of only commons, but i think they'll agree with this, bty, i think that there are plenty of broken combos and tinkers still being made, so, not to many worries...

To mandroid: I just said it may cast as it were in one of those zones. So you could cast Life from the LoamMTG Card: Life from the Loam from you virtual graveyard the first time you cast it. But it wouldn't do anything else than casting it from hand. There isn't a difference for this card. For Haakon it WOULD be one. I don't said that casting it from the yard allows you to use its abilities.
