Fun fact, Gary merchant of asphodel combos off with karmic guide & reveillark.

Necrotic Ooze is astounding with a bunch of tap and/or untap abilities, especially since it can stand in for some of your combos if they get put in the yard.

Illusionist's Bracers combos with Aphetto Alchemist for inf untap as well as being goodstuff for your other cards

Thornbite Staff a sac outlet and anything that taps to make a creature gives infinite sacs. It also goes inf with Hell's Caretaker or Adarkar Valkyrie and a sac outlet.

Speaking of sac outlets, with all these combos and token generators as well as a fair amount of recursion, you probably want some. Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, and Martyr's Cause would all be viable options.

Very interesting take on Zur, I really like it. Your deck goes in a much different direction than mine, but if I were to suggest anything it might be to add a few more removal options (Anguished Unmaking, Path/Swords, Vindicate etc.). I also notice that you're Counterspell light - I presume that's simply personal preference, but you may want to consider adding a few so that no one messes with your fun Intruder Alarm combos.

+1!

I think you sold me on the karmic guide/reveillark combo haha! Necrotic Ooze is perfect! I like the sac outlets too! The rest I'll bank for later. Thanks again!

Forkbeard thanks for the comment and upvote! I wanted a unique take on Zur, glad you like it! The list is really new so I haven't quite gotten all the removal/boarwipe/counter spells in there yet. Once I decide all the combo pieces that I want I can figure out all those details. Thanks again!

Honestly Suns_Champion this deck seems great, I am not the best person to ask about this color combo but it looks really well done and impressive. Another great deck my friend

Like it, a lot. I'm trying to decide if I should go with a Zur token build, or a Zur reanimator build. I'll probably end up doing both.

Hey Suns_Champion I can try to help, but what exactly are you looking for? What deck power do you want to achieve and what is your current meta? Is the goal more gimmicky combo? Are you opposed to stax pieces/ mass land destruction / winning in the very early game (T2-3)?

xander11 thanks for looking friend!

bushido_man96 thank you! I'll give yours a look!

Bolsheviktory thanks for responding! Honestly just looking for general advice/opinions. My current meta is pretty casual but there are a fair bit of powerful decks. The goal is more gimmicky combo, yes. I prefer pillowfort over stax/land destruction and I want to be winning turn 6-7. Again, thanks in advance for the help!

I like the deck, but I feel like you're seriously lacking interaction, especially at instant speed, something that is critical for combo decks. Do the Cluestones really help you here? If not, maybe you could cut them for a Swords to Plowshares, Counterspell, Swan Song, or even a Disenchant, Misdirection or Path to Exile. Similarly, I don't really see the need for Psionic Gift, Imprisoned in the Moon or really Razaketh's Rite (just get a better tutor honestly, like an Enlightened Tutor or if you feel the need to splurge, a Demonic Tutor, Rite is just bad), any of those three could be replaced with countermagic or probably a Necropotence. Actually, taking another look at the deck, you really lack card draw. Cantrips like Brainstorm, Preordain, Ponder or even Opt should help you smooth out your draws; you probably could also do with cutting one land, down to 37.

Hey, so I thought a little about the deck. Instead of efficient combos let's stick to the sillier ones, focusing on intruder alarm.

You are in very bad colors for tapping dorks, and the stonybrook/drowner combo is only tutorable by black. I'd suggest more artifact and instant focused combos that still require several pieces to set up, and are pretty cheesy.

So one would be Isochron Scepter + Ensoul Artifact + Some creatures which tap for mana + some pretty spicy spells such as:

To Arms! to draw your deck

Intruder Alarm with token generation, such as

Warping Wail for infinite scions/mana (and some other useful modes)

Raise the Alarm, Reality Shift to deck opponents, Pongify/Rapid Hybridization to replace fatties with 3/3s, etc.

This is all pretty janky, so a cheesy but more efficient method would be some of the above, but with Paradox Engine and artifact mana in place of Ensoul Artifact and tapping dorks.

A very fun combo sometimes used in Cedh is to have an Isochron Scepter imprinted with Dramatic Reversal, then playing a Copy Artifact imprinting a Swan Song, then playing some spell and infinitely countering it with swan song while it's on the stack to generate infinite 2/2 birds. Phyrexian Metamorph is a backup copier.

It looks like you are intentionally avoiding them, but I'd still look into the cheaper artifact and spell tutors to help assemble your combos easier. You are playing a tutor in the command zone, after all.

Regardless of the combos you choose to use, I'd include some cheap interaction and card advantage like the above comment suggests. The land count is also very high, I would cut down to 33 max. You can use some cheaper artifacts. Without mentioning the broken ones, you could stand to add Talisman of Progress, Talisman of Dominance, and Fellwar Stone. The 3cmc ones are typically pretty bad, but you could add Coalition Relic.

Hope that helps, good luck!

JA14732 thanks for responding! Really appreciate it! As soon as I've kinda nailed down what I want the deck to do and what combos I want to keep I can add in the removal/countermagic stuff. It's still very early in the brewing process, so adding the... I dunno, "basic" and "staple"(for lack of better words) stuff can come later on. I have Swords to Plowshares and Counterspell, and will soon pick up a Swan Song.

Anyway, Psionic Gift combos with Stonybrook Schoolmaster, Imprisoned in the Moon is a personal favorite and it deals with enemy commanders and planeswalkers really well, and Razaketh's Rite is just a budget tutor. Demonic Tutor is simply too much for me. I do have an Enlightened Tutor I can throw in here though. I'm considering Necropotence.

Last thing, I've always been unsure about the cantrips in EDH... are they really that useful in the long run?

Bolsheviktory thanks for coming back! The Isochron Scepter combos are great and I'm glad you mentioned them! At the moment, that's a 10ish card detour I don't feel like taking but I'll definitely save it for later!

Do you have any particular tutors you'd suggest? Preferably cheap ones that can grab Stonybrook Schoolmaster?

33 seems a little low... the most I'd cut is 3 basics going down to 35. That'll require testing for sure but we'll see how it goes. All those rocks are good and I may grab them! Thanks again!

One final thank you to both of you! Really appreciate the help!

Combo decks, to be as efficient as possible, have a really low curve. Though I don't think yours should be under 2, I think you can do with under 3.

Maybe cut Open the Vaults for Replenish?

Maybe replace the cluestones with Mana Crypt or Mana Vault....or if you don't have such a big budget Fellwar Stone or Worn Powerstone.

Pieguy396 says... #12

Looks pretty solid to me - I'd just suggest maybe cutting the Cluestones for more tutors - Mystical Tutor, Enlightened Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Fabricate, and Idyllic Tutor are all good options.

In addition, Dromar's Cavern, the Cycling Deserts, and the KTK lifelands all seem like weird inclusions, though, and I'd suggest cutting them for fetches and shocks if possible, or perhaps Prairie Stream and Sunken Hollow, or honestly even more basics.

Suns_Champion says... #13

Byuante thanks for the comment! Would also appreciate an upvote; trying to build some momentum :)

I agree with you on the curve. I can get it under 3. The suggestions you're giving me are all too expensive but the budget options are on the table! I think the general consensus is to cut the cluestones so they're out! Thanks again!

Pieguy396 thanks for having a look! The cluestones are going out! I think that was suggested more than anything else haha!

The tutors are good and I'll look for the cheaper ones to pick up. Dromar's Cavern is just nice mana fixing and goes well with the scrylands. The deserts I'll cut and the KTK lifelands are just budget options haha

Fetches/shocks are off the table due to price. The reason I don't have Prairie Stream and Sunken Hollow is that it isn't a full cycle(no enemy colored, so no W/B) and I have OCD so that bugs me :P

What do you think about me going down to 35 lands? I've been considering that....

Again, thanks for all the help everyone! Really grateful!

Pieguy396 says... #14

Fair point, I didn't buy shocks for my EDH decks for the longest time, either. I do have a Hallowed Fountain that I can trade/sell to you at a very reasonable price if you'd like, though. As for going down to 35 lands, I think that's definitely an option; you're not aiming to have more than, say, 6 mana at a time, so I think it's quite possible.

Hi,

after reviewing the decklist and the comments already posted I feel there is no big uncharted territory that has been left out. Some valuable resources have been put here. Something that T/O community is famous for and hopefully will be for a loong time ahead.

But then I saw a vital piece of the puzzle missing... where is the famous and glorious Elspeth, Sun's Champion ?? .... pauzes ....Just kidding... I could not resist this 'urge'.

... onwards...

Lately I ran into a Zur decks that played Notion Thief which is a great card engine in EDH. Especially combined with cards like Windfall you achieve great value. Both cards are standalone value hits already. Combined they will become a wincon that is hard to overcome for an opponent.

I see you run Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots as protection measures. But did you think of other protection cards like Misdirection, Stifle or the less appraised Vanishing?

I hope I brought you something interesting to consider :)

Best of luck and fun!

PJ

PartyJ thanks for taking a look at it and for the honest advice! I'm loving the generous and helpful nature of the T/O community and you're a big contributor to that atmosphere!

Hhahahahah! You know, it takes a lot of self control not to throw Elspeth into every deck with white, and splash white in decks for her, and change commanders to fit her in and....

I like Notion Thief. If I ever feel like I need another card draw engine I'l pick one up! I'll be adding a few more counterspells in here, and I have a Vanishing that I'll try out. I've played it in a Narset deck and it was pretty good.

Thanks again!

I second the suggestion of the talismans and Fellwar Stone, since ramping out a t3 Zur is always nice. I'm not a huge fan of Stern Mentor as a tap outlet, since it doesn't get around summoning sickness like most of the others, and is very slow. In addition, it feels like you may be overcommiting to the Stonybrook Schoolmaster combos. I would consider adding some more free sac outlets, since they not only enable your recursion combos, but also work with the infinite tokens you create with your other combos. Altar of Dementia is a great way to kill with infinite tokens, while Martyr's Cause and Fanatical Devotion are decent protection pieces that are tutorable by Zur. I would also definitely recommend including some counterspells to protect your combos. Maybe cutting back a bit on token producers, especially the worse ones like Drana's Chosen and adding some great cheap counterspells like Swan Song, Dispel, and Arcane Denial would be good to shift you away from being all in on your combo. In that case, you could tutor up Necropotence first as a draw engine, and be more resilient against disruption. Rule of Law is a decent piece of disruption, that doesn't affect you greatly, since all of your combos focus on activated abilities.

December 6, 2017 10:27 p.m.

Blood Artist or Zulaport Cutthroat could be pretty nice here. With Viscera Seer or Altar as an outlet you can kill everyone in response to whatever they are playing.

As some others have already mentioned, your deck really needs some interaction (instant-speed) spells & effects to truly become a force to be reckoned with. I would simply mainboard the instants in your maybeboard. I like the general idea of the deck though.

x12721 says... #20

My only suggestion would be to focus on cards that have to do with tapping/untapping. Freed from the Real is awesome, and that + King Macar, the Gold-Cursed + Paradise Mantle means you can infinitely wipe the board. Also, any commander deck needs instant speed removal. Finally, Teferi's Protection is great, and Rhystic Study is great for card draw, and can be tutored by Zur. Hope this helped.

sweet build friend,

some quick suggestions(sorry if I make any repeats, there are a lot of comments already haha) Austere Command as a "catch all" sweeper. Similar idea with Merciless Eviction.

For board protection I love Teferi's Protection and Trickbind.

For some mana fixing River of Tears and Path of Ancestry .

General Zur utility Reconnaissance to get his attack trigger without risking him dying in combat. Similar idea with Rogue's Passage.

Like I said, sweet build, welcome to TappedOut, and I wish you many games of combo'ing off!!! :o)

Thank you all for commenting! You are all part of what makes the T/O community awesome! Truly grateful!

ThallionDarkshine Thank you! I get what you're saying about overcommiting to the Stonybrook Schoolmaster combos... I need to test them out more thoughly but I'll definatly be looking for trouble in that regard. I like all of the other suggestions and will consider them. Altar of Dementia interests me the most. The 2cmc mana rocks, more sac outlets, and more counters are going in soon!

SlavicGhaespar I like them! Thank you! I'll be putting more sac outlets in soon so those'll work great! I can probably replace the Suture Priest and Soul Warden with them.

NV_1980 Yeah I really wanted to do something unique with Zur. It seemed fun. A lot of the maybeboard will be shuffled in there soon! Thank you!

chadsansing Thanks for the compliments! Glad you like it! War Tax seems okay. Concerned abount the need to pay for it, but I like that it's tutorable by Zur! Yeah I do have a lot of sub themes haha! I need a lot of testing! I like some of those recursion options and will consider them. Thanks for the advice on the mana base. I remember yours for your The Locust God deck looked near-perfect. As soon as I've nailed down exactly what cards I want in here I can adjust the mana base accordingly. For now, my OCD enjoys the fact that it's split perfectly into 3rds haha! Thanks again!

x12721 Thanks! I've been thinking about Macar for a while. Teferi's Protection is great but kinda pricy. Rhystic Study is great! Thanks!

usaDiabetic Thanks again! i like all of your suggestions, but I love Reconnaissance! Sweet card! Thank you so much!

One last THANK YOU to all of you for the comments and upvotes! Really appreciate it!

Deck is a cool take on Zur, but I will say though that the artifact ramp you have is pretty bad, even on a budget. Fellwar Stone is better than Commander's Sphere in most player groups, and Talisman of Dominance and Talisman of Progress are far better than their respective cluetstones.

December 7, 2017 8:33 p.m.

Ok, trying to make suggestions based on things that are not already suggested and to give more interaction with Zur. Seems you are running the combo route so these may or may not be what you're looking for. But here are my thoughts:

I think this deck list looks really good and I like what you've done with it. Zur is a pretty interesting commander to watch do his thing. The only thing I could think of (besides the above) would be enchantment creatures so that you are getting benefits for Zur searches and creatures to give you that flexibility to fit any situation.

I like my version of Zur, its an Ad Nauseam combo deck, though this is much more budget than it (If I build mine it'd take me a year)
