Kilroy54 thanks for looking! I'll get a Fellwar Stone in there, and will be cutting the cluestones! Thanks for your input and upvote!

brandonsperry25 Thanks for helping out and Upvoting! I like Eidolon of Rhetoric as a lockdown and Monk Idealist for some recursion. I'll consider both! Yeah I've finally gotten some testing in and honestly it feels like Zur is the one playing the deck haha! Total fun though! Thanks again!

The_Baneslayer thanks... though I'm not sure if you're here to talk about my deck or yours lol. Hope you like it and will upvote!

I didn't upvote? Sorry I thought I did (I like discussing different versions of different commanders, was hoping to start a conversation about him as a whole)

Also a quick tip, if you are in a grindy matchup and the games drawing out, Solemnity and Phyrexian Unlife make you effectively immortal.

Oh and Alexi's Cloak is a great protection measure to get on Zur the turn he attacks

The_Baneslayer Thanks! Sure I'd love to talk about Zur, he's great!

I like the Solemnity and Phyrexian Unlife combo... something to consider for sure!

Back to Zur, I love him. Having a reliable, repeatable tutor in the command zone is insane. He's very easy to build around even with the 3cmc enchantment limitations. He's powerful but nicely balanced. All of his downsides seem to be mitigated somehow. For example, he needs to attack, but he also has flying, making it easy to attack safely. The color identity is great too... I get my choice of all the best tutors, boardwipes, single target removal spells, and combos in the game! And that's something very new to me, as I've only really played and , which aren't as powerful in EDH.

I love him as a commander, for the reasons you stated and that I can get Ad Nauseam to work in commander (been trying for ages but had a oh duh moment)

He is such a flexible commander its insane, I'd never expect a combo deck like this to be how he would be used. That is not a bad thing and I really like the idea. You can build him in almost any way you want. You want to run a lot of tokens? Well he can tutor out Intangible Virtue as well as other enchantments that help them, or esper control, and tutor out Banishing Light and other enchantment removal to clear the board for a powerful Zur. He is used a lot but I think you'd be hard pressed to find two Zur decks that are the same! I don't know if I;m going to build my Ad Nauseam deck with him, but if I do my friends are going to haaaaate me!

Another card to consider is Maze of Ith to prevent his death should your opponents board state be much better than yours

I'm not too good with Esper or aggro/fast-paced decks, but I'm currently building a Kruphix deck and think some constellations may be, could be (I haven't a clue) beneficial.

For instance you can have a Hypnotic Siren, but since I don't think you can play it for the bestow cost you can also include a Riptide Chimera, put it back in your hand, and then play it for bestow. You could also just pull it out with your Recruiter of the Guard.

Not sure if this strays to far from what you're going for but it may help if they somehow get a creature on the board that you're not ready to deal with, like a Hundred-Handed One or Guardian of the Gateless. Or maybe even just snatch their commander.

Also, as a side note, I like to include the Archetypes when I can and this may benefit from an Archetype of Courage or the Archetype of Imagination, however the latter is kind of high CMC for the deck.

Awoken_Leviathan thanks for the comment! Would appreciate an upvote though :)

I like the suggestions, but this being a combo deck(not aggro), there are some things I don't have to care about as much. So Hundred-Handed One or Guardian of the Gateless aren't really useful because I don't care about my life total as long as I can combo off.

Hypnotic Siren isn't helpful because Zur already has flying. Riptide Chimera is just bad and does nothing to help my gameplan.

I like the Archetypes too and run Archetype of Courage in one of my decks. But again, it doesn't really help me at all. I either have 2 creatures or 1,000,000,000,000 so first strike or flying don't help me much either way.

Thanks again for your input. Hope you like the deck and will upvote it!

Got it, but when I was referring to Guardian of the Gateless I meant the opponent would have one and could block your 1,000,000,000,000 creatures (with little side effect if it also had Gaseous Form or something similar) so you could use a Hypnotic Siren to take control of it and effectively have a searchable removal spell since you can attach it to someone else's creatures, not just your own.

Ohhhh apologies! Misread that completely!

I see your point. I think I have enough spot removal, counterspells, and tutors to handle those types of cards.

Thanks again!

One fun card you could put in is Steel of the Godhead getting good life back every turn while your opponents can't block it.

Suns_Champion says... #11

SkullOfPoison thanks for the comment! Would appreciate an upvote though :)

Steel of the Godhead I've absolutely considered. But life isn't the biggest deal because I can be at 1 life for all I care when I combo off. And the unblockable isn't as important either, as Zur has good evasion, I play in a playgroup of 7 people so I usually have options to attack, and I only really want to be attack twice at most.

Thanks for the input! Hope you like the deck and will upvote it!

Super interesting deck, I really like it. :)

Have you considered Brain Maggot? Zur can tutor it and it could offer some combo protection.

Flooremoji says... #13

It looks great +1!

Does it usually get the main combo out, or does it rely on smaller combos?

Card suggestion: Midnight Guard.

Suns_Champion says... #14

Eramef Thank you! Brain Maggot seems good in 1v1, but maybe not the 7-8 player games I'm used too haha

Flooremoji Hi again! Thanks for the comment, though I don't think the upvote worked haha

Main combo. Since Zur can tutor for 1/2 of it, it's just a matter of drawing/tutoring the other half out and getting it haste with boots/greaves. turn 7-9 win is normal, which is optimal for my meta.

Midnight Guard goes well with the theme of the deck but can't actually do anything. If I had an aura that allowed him to tap for a creature he'd be in here, but as far as I know I don't in Esper colors :/

Thanks again! I'll be along to your deck later today/tomorrow!

Yup! I had her in the first draft of this deck. Too many hoops to jump through so she was eventually cut.

Out of ideas then!

I really love this deck concept, I think the only thing I would consider adding is a Open the Vaults just in case a rogue Nev Disk or Akroma's Vengeance comes across the table. It would mess up your game plan. I also think you could add an Icy Manipulator or Puppet Strings, in combination with some Orbs Static Orb/Winter Orb you can get some sick lockdown combos.

Also why in god's name is there no Rhystic Study in here? And you asked for board wipes so Cyclonic Rift is a nessecity.

February 1, 2018 7:47 p.m.

Suns_Champion says... #20

DrkNinja Thanks for the comment! No upvote though? :(

Open the Vaults is good. Not a fan of the lockdown cards and I can't tutor any of them with Zur.

Rhystic Study... wow I dunno haha! Going in eventually! Yes on Cyclonic Rift too. I've never really played blue so all the blue cards don't get to me as fast.

Thanks again!

I like your it's really nice, and there's a great deck here just looks like it needs to be fine tuned. I find that with a combo deck timing is everything and having counter magic is so important. Check out my Infinite combo deck here it uses some of the same cards as this has a great win record and should give you some idea's.
