My second draft deck of a 4/2/1 IPA Block Cube.
2-1 vs. Mirror (heavier on )
1-0 vs. beats
This is part two of learning the limited environment of an IPA block cube, this being a deck drafted from a six man pod. I will leave a few comments on what I liked about this deck in particular.
My first pick, first pack was
Ordered Migration
, which pushed me into looking at a lot of domain cards. It performed the best out of any card I played and producing 4 1/1 fliers is insane for the power level of the cube.
Samite Pilgrim
and
Goham Djinn
both worked well with this in mind, but I did not see many other good domain cards. I moved towards gathering a collection of solid beaters like
Fungal Shambler
,
Questing Phelddagrif
,
Sea Snidd
, and
Charging Troll
.
Being in green gave me access to
Penumbra Bobcat
, which puts in a ton of work against aggro decks. Having green and blue allowed me to get some fliers with
Gaea's Skyfolk
, which is one of the strongest turn 2 plays in the format (in my brief experience so far), as well as
Living Airship
which is difficult for an opponent to deal with.
I also came across a great deal of strong cards in white, blue, and black.
Urborg Uprising
,
Probe
, and
Stormscape Battlemage
provide boatloads of card advantage (I think that's the right term) and the slowness of the format and the kickers makes their high costs manageable. For a little splash of protection for my cards,
Coalition Honor Guard
and
Vodalian Hypnotist
kept my opponents from messing with me too much.
I think the deck could've been improved in a few ways. A few more pieces of fixing would've been good, and I should have brought in another Forest, as I was occasionally stranded without green mana for my bombs. Removal was also pretty lacking, basically relying on
Stormscape Battlemage
and
Zombie Boa
, so I could have dropped a few creatures. Any other critiques are welcome!
A few things about the draft in general:
Forsaken City
seems to be a really inadvisable pick unless you are running five colors. Even then, it just seems wrong unless you build for it.
Spreading Plague
is hilarious and led to some really cool plays in the mirror match.
Samite Elder
has some awesome potential and can cause some really advantageous combat scenarios, even just by being there.
I think that's about all I have to say right now; I may add more to this later on if I feel so inclined. Thanks for checking this out and please leave any recommendations, pieces of advice, or any comments!
