IRON MAN, TITAN OF INNOVATION - "NIGHTMARES OF NEW YORK" V1.0 10.29.24

Iron Man has always been my favorite hero, and with the new Marvel Secret Lair cards coming out I can make an official Iron Man deck. I'm a fan of all the cards they announced, and if they make a tasty Dr. Strange I would go into the builder again, but this time, I'm gonna focus on the billionaire playboy philanthropist. The game plan is to build a suit of armor around the world with constructs through Simulacrum Synthesizer, if the Synthesizer gets blown up Ill lean into a Voltron type of strategy with Iron Man himself and an army of tiny thopters, lets see how this goes!

November 21st V2.0 Update: The deck performed well the first three games I played with it. The issue I kept running into during all three games is that Iron Man was the only creature to really make any impact, it could just be a small sample size, but maybe this deck should go the route of a pure voltron, toolbox type of deck. Twenty creatures is still kind of small, but leaning into artifacts may enable cleaner plays, which brings me to the second pain point of the current build. The deck has some variation of CMC among the artifacts but things you would hesitate to sacrifice to get something bigger, this update will look to either hit consistent low CMC drops off of the treasure token, or have a pathway to get something moderately big, I think I'm going to tweak the CMC to 1-3, this way there will not be many dead cards in hand, and searching will be more uniform until I find what really makes Iron Man pop. I really felt like I was getting pecked at quite a bit after the first game I played, and it reminded me of that scene in Iron Man 3 where he was getting PTSD from the alien invasion in the first Avengers movie, so, this is in turn Tony Stark attempting to have an answer, and firepower for all things even though he knows that it will be impossible to prepare for everything.

I will update combo's and interactions tomorrow evening, thank you for any criticism and recommendations.

December 16th Update: I'm still waiting on some shipment from Card Kingdom, but with the holidays shipping is gonna be slower. Reviewing what I have so far has been fun, I haven't retooled a deck as much as I have this one without getting bored. Now, I'm thinking of maybe using Iron Man's trigger to build a stronger defensive presence, stax-esque, while shrinking the focus on voltron by a four or so equipment cards. Just throwing some ideas since building a unique board state would be more efficient than paying an equipment cost when I may be tapped out. I've also updated the format for easier viewing on which artifacts roll into others and so forth.

COMBOS / INTERACTIONS:

Aggravated Assault + Sword of Feast and Famine or The Reaver Cleaver = Infinite Combat Phases | Firstly, were looking to attach whichever sword to Iron Man since he's a flier, and our trigger to pull more artifacts from our library. With Feast and Famine we get to untap our lands allowing use to pay the cost for Aggravated Assault, with The Cleaver we will be creating five treasure tokens in addition to the one Iron Man creates on his own, which we can use to pay for Aggravated Assaults cost.

Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth = Colorless Mana (Infinite) | Able to go into any deck, this infinite combo can generate big plays out of nowhere as long as you have six mana available in one turn, or three mana on two well timed turns. With Basalt Monolith UNTAPPED, cast Rings of Brighthearth and copy the tap effect from Basalt Monolith to generate three colorless mana, at this point use the copied effect of ROB (for a cost of two colorless) to generate another three, and then use the remainder to untap Basalt Monolith, rinse and repeat gaining one colorless infinitely. Add in the Walking Ballista for even more fun!

Enter the Infinite + Laboratory Maniac = Alternate Wincon | Laboratory Maniac/Enter the Infinite wins aren't anything new, but when using Dream Halls to cast the spell WAY early its something that may catch your pod by surprise. Dream Halls allows you to cast spells by discarding a card that shares a color with it, for this to work, you gotta have five open mana, and at least one blue card in hand in addition to enter the infinite and hope no one has a counterspell, its at this point I'd place a tutorable artifact back into the library so you can win literally on your next turn after activating Iron Man's effect. If you can manage to remove Dream Halls after casting Enter the Infinite... even better.

Quietus Spike + Strionic Resonator = Huge Life Loss | Quietus Spike needs to be attached to a creature, and needs to get damage through, at this point, the key word we're looking at on Quietus Spike is "Whenever" as it is the key word that will make the effect of Quietus Spike double, meaning, that we can cut one opponents life total in half, and then again (by paying two and tapping the resonator), effectively kneecapping their life total by three quarters, perfect for the Oloro player in your group!

Iron Man, Titan of Innovation + Skyblinder Staff = Unblockable Iron Man | Our primary source of damage, and something we would want to be as big as possible. In the few games I played with my original build I found that my opponents would ignore the initial pot shots I took with a hasty flying Tony Stark, but as he got bigger they would respond in creative ways with their creatures. This ensures our main piece can keep attacking freely and piling on the damage. A cheaper mana cost, and a low threat assessment card only creatures with Reach can block our guy Tony. Which isn't the most popular keyword I've seen in the few years I've been playing MTG.
