Maybeboard

GW go wide deck, some early dorks, lots of token makers, some nice midrangey threats and a couple of anthems to boot. Has a tiny Presence of Gond combo package in it, though good luck pulling it off lol. Most aura tutors fetch stuff like pacifism, which is more often the go to. You can also use Shanna, Sisay's Legacy for regular EDH if you want.

Update on an old Wayfaring Temple PDH deck, with some new toys from mh1 and Ironroot Warolord as the new general. I always found Wayfaring Temple was just never a good enough threat in the early game (t1 dork into it means you have a a very shockable 2/2), and it's populate ability seems really cool but just so often you're populating 1/1s unless you bend your deck build around playing the few common cards that make 3/3 and 4/4 tokens which are generally overcosted or suboptimal (Coursers' Accord, Horncaller's Chant, evoking Walker of the Grove, Centaur's Herald). If I'm paying 8 for Horncaller's Chant I might as well just run ulamog's crusher and getting to 8 mana consistently would require bending this deck even more. For this kind of strategy, I'd recommend Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage 100x more. She encourages you to go big with your mana to allow for multiple activation and actually go off with populate. Like a cool token-stompy build where you don't even need to spend many cards to get a threatening board.

So in realizing that populate on Wayfaring Temple isn't actually that useful in practice, Ironroot Warord was a pretty easy choice. It's power still scaled with your board state, and 5 toughness means off a t1 dork you get a 2/5 which is SUCH a better stat-line than a 2/2. Anything other than hard removal basically won't kill it, and after a wipe your general won't DIE from having damage marked on it as it has a static toughness. The mana sink is also really valuable and if you're stuck for cards late game as you'll always have something to do.

So, what about other generals in comparison to Ironroot Warlord? This deck on wants to go wide (with some midrangey threats) and maximize anthems, with the addition of having a big threat in the command zone. Splitting some of your deck (as I do) by adding auras to power up/give evasion/protection to your commander might be a poor move overall. I could easily see the argument that the best 'go wide' PDH deck would be an elves-centric (Sigil Captain), as many elves are 1/1s and can power out Sigil Captain quickly (Captain is otherwise not that great in multiplayer with damage based board wipes killing your x/1's easily, so you really need Captain out asap. Elves get him out quick and are usually 1/1s so he seems like a great fit, tho I would include powerful token makers like [Battle Screech] and not purely elves).

Other good GW options for going wide seem to be Juniper Order Ranger, Good-Fortune Unicorn from the recent mh1 and even Woodvine Elemental. Good-Fortune Unicorn seems to be the best out of these to me, it's similar but less restrictive than Sigil Captain and comes down a turn earlier with a far less restrictive mana cost, but maybe has a lower ceiling than Sigil Captain. It's consistency and flexibility might very well make it better though, and it interacts in a cool way with persist. Juniper Order Ranger seems to be the worst out of these. it's similar to Sigil Captain and Good-Fortune Unicorn where you ideally want to cast them, THEN play a lot of threats - unfortunately, being 5 mana means you have to wait a really long time to do that.

The fact that it becomes a threat on it's own is nice but if you care about that then you might find [Wayfaring Temple] and [Ironroot Warlord] to be more consistent. Lastly, Woodvine Elemental is a good threat on it's own, draws you a card each time it attacks (well...and everyone else, but you probably could use it the most!) and anthems your board for +2 on most swings on average, in 4 player. I think Woodvine Elemental is pretty underrated but I can see why people are turned off by the randomness of Parley. Seems good for either a midrangey or go wide strategy.

And those are my thoughts on GW PDH generals. Next minute someone's going to tell me Conclave Cavalier is the best GW general (I can see the argument in 1v1 tbh).
