Rift Bolt is actually better than Spark Elemental if you can't afford Goblin Guide.

But if you don't mind limiting yourself Shard Volley might be better than the both of them.

You might want to try Vexing Devil. Everyone takes the 4 damage because if they don't, you get a 4/3 creature out on turn 1.

Kjartan, actually I would be running Rift Bolts but currently I only have one. My LGS has been out of them for a while now. I'm thinking to replace the Helixes with Rifts though.

ehawkins11, I would love to use Vexing Devil. I was trying to trade three from a friend but he didn't want to part with his favorite card. I don't blame him.

Thanks for the comments. If you guys have any ideas about the sideboard, please let me know. I'm still working on that as well.

Kjartan I missed that you mention this but I am trying to get some Shard Volleys...just my LGS seems to almost always be out of the burn cards I need -_-

I am sure I am just having a duh moment but given nearly every spell you have is less than 3 isn't the Eidolon going to do as much if not more damage to you than your opponent? Seems like it might be better in sideboard. Also a card to consider is Hellspark Elemental. One more than Spark Elemental but has the recursion of Unearth on it to give that extra little kick. Also Sparkspitter would let you turn dead land draws into extra Spark Elementals. If you do end up going the way of adding the suggested cards consider something that gives you an effect when your creatures die so that you get more bang for your buck.

Captain_AHat, thanks for the input! I do agree that at first I thought the same thing about Eidolon of the Great Revel, but actually my opponent would be taking more damage if anything. Since Modern is a fast format (turn 4 wins I believe), most spells cast will be around 3 cmc or less. I do get hit 2 for every spell I cast but so does my opponent. I hit him for 3 at the very least and take 2. My opponent takes essentially 2 every spell they cast -- counters, burns, removal, cantrips, aggro creatures, etc. The only time the Eidolon wouldn't be good is mid to late game against midrange and control, but by that time, my opponent should have 0 life.

I have considered Hellspark Elemental. He's still a consideration mostly for the unearth and trample, but what's keeping me from running him is the fact he isn't a noncreature spell that procs Monastery Swiftspear and that my 2 cmc spots seems kind of settled already except for maybe Lightning Helix. If I were to go the route with effects triggering when creatures die, I would rebuild a completely new deck, going creature aggro focus with cards like Ball Lightning while using Athreos, God of Passage as a recursion/damage toolbox.

Take out Rain of Gore. It's good against a single deck which is not played very often. It is also irrelevant against Leyline of Sanctity which is a huge problem.

I would understand having 1 if there is more than 1 Soul Sisters player in your meta, but having 2 is wasting sideboard slots. Yes, Soul Sisters is a hard matchup, but if you know your opponents deck well, you have a huge advantage.

I'd recommend switching from Mardu into Jeskai, because Treasure Cruise makes the deck infinitely better. The problem RDW used to have was running of out gas, but Cruise eliminates that completely. Black also adds nothing important. Having blue also means you can play Geist of Saint Traft in the sideboard.

JexInfinite, what do you suggest I include in my sideboard for Rain of Gore then? There are two shops I go to so technically there are two lgs meta's I have to adjust to. One is dominated by more infect, and the other is much more diverse. I feel like my worse matchups are decks that wreck faster than I do, such as affinity and infect, and decks running Leyline of Sanctity. I have Wear / Tear to use again the leyline, but for the other two matchups, I'm not quite sure.

I'm actually considering just splashing blue for Treasure Cruise and making this 4-color. I don't have any Steam Vents right now and am trying out either Reforge the Soul or Dangerous Wager for some card draw. Taking black, however, doesn't seem too ideal for me. I like having the black bolt as well as access to Rakdos Charm against aggro matchups and some affinity matchups.

Geist of Saint Traft is currently out of my budget (getting Goblin Guide come first) but an interesting suggestion. How useful is he as a SB option and against what would he come in? I've seen some burn SB lists run him but I'm not quite sure of his role in burn. Also getting both a blue and a white source can be kind of awkward, though I suppose that's the same for the double white for the Firewalker.

More blue for Treasure Cruise.

You really need Goblin Guides. Also, splashing blue for Treasure Cruise is much better than Reforge the Soul.

Kage-no-Raito says... #11

NateJH, I'm planning on it once I get a Steam Vents and more fetches.

vishnarg, yeah, I'm working on getting them but $80 for a playset is not easy to drop money for. What do you suggest I take out for the Guides when I get them? And for the cruise, I'm planning on it but my budget won't let me right now.

Well, Lavamancer has bad synergy with Treasure Cruise, and Goblin Guide could probably replace Reforge the Soul and Shard Volley in this build.

Kage-no-Raito says... #13

I noticed that about Grim Lavamancer and Treasure Cruise. I do like the Lavamancer though since the Lavamancer turns my graveyard into burn which is great late game. I'll probably remove them once I get the lands to include Treasure Cruise. Shard Volleys feed either the Lavamancer or Treasure Cruise so I'm not sure about removing them.

Smash to Smithereens seems like it would be good for your affinity matchup. Shattering Spree is anotjer possibility for the affinity matchup. Also Combust seems like it could be good against various decks potentially even soulsisters. Flames of the Blood Hand is another card that stops lifegain and seems to be preferred to Rain of Gore. Molten Rain also seems to be a popular sideboard choice in many burn decks. Good luck getting those Vexing Devils that card totally kicks ass. I was thinking about getting into modern and burn was gona be my deck of choice but 4 colors seems a bit much do you think jeskai or grixis is a better starting point?

Kage-no-Raito says... #15

PieSquared, thanks for the suggestions and advice. Smash to Smithereens would be perfect for affinity once I can find some at my LGS. Combust seems to be all right but I'm not sure what matchup I would use it in. It only hits creatures and I have my bolts and searing blazes for creatures. I do notice that Rain of Gore is not a typical SB choice. However, I feel like it would be great against any lifegain deck especially when I run out of steam. Soul Sisters would try to stabilize by lifegain once I'm topdecking for burn spells. Flames of the Blood Hand prevent the the lifegain for a turn but Rain of Gore turns any lifegain into death. I'm probably not going to get any Vexing Devils. I've gotten some Goblin Guides which work wonders in this deck.

I actually thinking about dropping black from the deck since like you said, 4 colors is a bit much. If I do that, I'm planning on replacing Rain of Gore in the SB with Leyline of Punishment which is cheaper than Flames right now. Originally I started with Dega/Mardu (I prefer calling it Dega) with Reforge the Soul for card draw. That worked out decently but Treasure Cruise is just better card draw overall. Burn is just awesome. I love being able to play fast. Pre-rotation standard I would be able to win matches in 5 min. Granted I was using more of a W-X-weenie deck since burn was too slow in that standard meta for me. Anyways what would you suggest adding/removing if I were to go Jeskai?

Bump in the Night seems to be your only black card in the main which is nice but if your opening hand had something like Bump in the Night, Boros Charm, Mountain, and Wooded Foothills, do you get Blood Crypt or Sacred Foundry? I think you could add a fourth Skullcrack to the main as well as completing the playsets of Treasure Cruise and Boros Charm. That leaves you with 1 more spot which could probably become the 4th Goblin Guide when you get it but a third Searing Blaze seems suitable for the time being. Another way to stop soulsisters is to instead of stopping the life gain using Searing Blaze and Searing Blood type effectsto kill their creatures whil also doing damage. Just curious how does the infect matchup go? Infect also seems like a really fast deck. Is burn usually faster? Or do you point your burn at their creatures and win that way?

December 29, 2014 10:14 a.m.

Kage-no-Raito says... #17

The suggestion with Searing Blood and Searing Blaze seems pretty good. Removing the life gain enablers while damaging is a great idea rather than relying on a Leyline to mitigate lifegain. What are your thoughts on mainboarding Lightning Helix?

I actually haven't been able to test this out at a Modern competition yet due to school and also being busy during the holidays. I've only tested against my friends' izzet combo, control, and budget affinity decks. One of them has a infect deck so I should be able to test against it once school starts up again (dorm life). I do expect affinity and infect to be faster than me. As far as I can tell, the best way to handle infect is creature removal since we will typically have more burn than they do creatures. However, this has to be done carefully since they can buff their creatures even after targeting it with burn. With the white splash, I'm considering running Path to Exile in the sideboard. Path will eliminate any buffs they might have to try to save the creature. The only hard counter against path that I see infect having mainboard is just Apostle's Blessing.

I dont see the need for Lightning Helix in the main since it does not really help with the soul sisters matchup and is basically a completely dead card in the infect matchup. If anything I would sideboard it for the burn mirror but looking at the fate reforged sooilers I think tjat playing Soulfire Grand General could be some very nice sideboard tech for aggro mirror matchups. But if you really want to put them in I think the best thing to take out for them would be the Shard Volleys becaus if you have multiple 2 cmc cards you dont always want to sacrifice your lands.

December 30, 2014 8:48 p.m.

Kage-no-Raito says... #19

For the mirror matchup, I have 3 Kor Firewalkers. I saw Soulfire Grand Master and thought about her, but she dies to a single Lightning Bolt. Kor Firewalker can't be bolted, blocks Guides and Swiftspears, and gives me life. You're ride about Shard Volley. Whenever I have one, I usually only have a non-basic land to sac rather than a mountain, and I really don't want to sac a non-basic. I might cut down to one shard.

don't use Eidolon of the Great Revel if you only use ONE cards with cmc greater than 3. It's a double-edged sword.

That title and no Worldfire?! Not an amazing card but just about as burn as a card can be if you ask me.

January 5, 2015 4:43 p.m.

And Anger of the Gods is definitely sideboard worthy in case you're playing a token generator.

January 5, 2015 4:44 p.m.

I have a deck a lot like this, +1. I can only highly suggest 4 Goblin Guide Cheek out my version The cats on fire..... again
