It's beginning to look a lot like Grixis.

I am actually thinking about side boarding it in my B/W/R deck because of what it does to mono blue devo. And Master of Waves has Pro Red, so Anger of the Gods gets the elementals, but not him. So if I drop 1 of those on the board, I don't even need to worry about anger.

Exactly. I don't play anger anymore because it misses far too many creatures. Don't forget +1 the deck if you like it! =)

So, do you find life gain to be a problem? I feel like the reason why Grixis isn't being played heavily in standard is because Esper and Azorious have far too much life gain. I am hoping there is a Lose X gain X other than Gray Merchant that's not based on devo in this block for black. Playing my BWR the only reason I play it over Grixis is because of the need to gain back life.

+1 I have a Grixis deck list that looks similar to this. I wanted to use Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius as a card drawing engine. T6 would make it a bit slow if I can't control the board. So it's either more chump blocks, life gain or go Midrange it would seem.

Anger to me is really only useful against weenie aggro decks. Your right it misses a lot. But I have also won games because of it. I am testing running 4 to see if it ups my board control. All effective board wipes require white.

I would love lose x gain x. I'm really hoping the new set helps grixis. The two new scry lands will help immensely.

DimirPlagueLord I too have wanted card draw and then I remembered underworld connections! Hopefully this helps.

December 18, 2013 3:20 p.m.

I have Underworld connections in my BWR. I am still wanting to use Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius for dmg + card draw. He's a late game built in fireball if I can pour enough mana into him. But yes, all else fails Underworld Connections or Read the Bones . Who needs life, Suicide Black FTW!!!

Haha basically. Obviously whip gives lifelink but I don't want to use it.

December 18, 2013 6:41 p.m.

I wouldn't run enough creatures for Whip to be effective. What does that leave us Corrupt ?! That's helpful.

Thought about main boarding Erebos, God of the Dead , still shaky and not fixing the life problem.

Also thought about main boarding a Mind Grind JUST because. LoL.

So maybe main board Pack Rat and Elixir of Immortality oh wait...bah. I'm going to the drawing board and finding a way to make Grixis control work in standard!!!

DimirPlagueLord Grixis has worked really well in my local meta. However, I'm hoping Born of the Gods released something that helps it make the jump to winning standard and making top 8.

December 19, 2013 5:13 a.m.

Exactly. I want them to even out standard a bit. Esper is the main viable control deck. Playing any form of Blue Control is expensive. Jace and Revelation alone is almost $200, and they will be rotating out. Mono Blue, Mono Red and Mono Black are the power houses for devo. R/G devo is strong. There isn't enough mix. The new sets rotating in are supposed to fix that.

I think devo is here to stay, and honestly I like the mechanic. I just don't like that they put the mechanic so heavily based on creatures. Like Fanatic of Mogis and Gray Merchant of Asphodel there abilities would serve well on instant/sorcery cards as well. Maybe that's part of them slowing down the format.

Long and short Grixis works, but it won't be a viable option for one reason. Not enough black life drain. Works fine in local meta, but you won't see people playing it at big constructed events when your facing down an Azorious control deck and the guy is sitting on 40 life. Grixis has no answer for that, Crypt Incursion will only gain you for aggro decks, won't help a control match up.

DimirPlagueLord Well said. I'd really love to see a hard hitting life gain/drain instant or even a sorcery. Can they please reprint Exsanguinate Cruel Ultimatum False Cure Profane Command Suffer the Past

Anger of the Gods and Mizzium Mortars don't work for this deck?

December 20, 2013 3:02 a.m.

DrFunk27 says... #13

Mizzium should be in the sideboard but anger isn't that strong. I used it quite heavily when it released but it just doesn't hit enough of the current meta. It was usually a dead card in my hand. I love the card, but at this point in time it's not worth it.

December 20, 2013 10:06 a.m.

I would personally still main board the Mizzium's over the Rift. We could have a philosophical debate as to whats truly better. For me its a matter of preference. I keep 2 Anger's main board. I have 4 MB in my BWR deck and I am debating how I want to proceed forward (waiting on some Boros Reckoner to trade my way). Long and short they work, but I've had to cast two Anger of the Gods to clear the board. So that's 6 mana, 2 cards during MY turn JUST to establish board control. I agree it's not the best, but I can't run less than 4 board reset's in any deck (I have control issues!!!).

Judging by the fact that Blood Baron and Demon are heavily prevalent I should probably main board mizzium. I'll see how it goes with Anger. I do like the card.

I'm thinking about playing a single Master of Cruelties in my Grixis. How has he been working for you? I'm guessing Dimir Charm , Last Breath , Jace, Architect of Thought are all pretty bad for it offensively. Still worth it?

I play 4 Anger of the Gods main deck because it wrecks so many strategies so hard. My game 1 is barely winnable against control anyway so i just go full tilt against all the other strategies.

Master is awesome. There are a few cards that hose him but it's not guaranteed they will have the answer. I've thought about 2 copies. He's an unstoppable wall against green and red decks. Not many decks play dimir charm but last breath and jace can shut him down. That's why I have planeswalker removal. If those are what worry you I wouldn't hesitate to use him based on that. Against deck strategies using last breath I would just use counter flux anyways. There are ways to keep him safe.

what about Breaking / Entering Reap Intellect Epic Experiment or Realmwright (for the mama in tandem with like Crypt Ghast )

December 26, 2013 2:56 a.m.

Kaitoghost says... #20

Breaking / Entering doesn't really fit with what the deck is trying to do, i'd think. Reap Intellect is a sideboard card at best, and isn't as good as Slaughter Games .

December 26, 2013 3:05 a.m.

DrFunk27 says... #21

Exactly. Slaughter Games and Counterflux are solid because they can't be answered. They safe plays. Breaking / Entering is much more of a mill strategy, which I think is completely relevant in the meta right now, just not right for this deck. Thanks for your suggestions!

Dying Wish probably isn't the Lose X Gain X, you're looking for, but it's the only other mono-black I can think of in standard. Debt to the Deathless is a lot of fun, but obviously, Grixis doesn't have white in it.

December 29, 2013 7:24 p.m.

DrFunk27 says... #23

Yeah, neither of those are optimal unfortunately. Debt to the Deathless isn't even plausible in standard. Oh well!

I'm trying to make a Grixis deck as well. Have you thought of Notion Thief to shut down Sphinx's Revelation ? and What are your thoughts on Steam Augury ?

December 30, 2013 3:50 a.m.

DrFunk27 says... #25

Steam Augury has good intentions but it's a severely watered down poor reprint. To expensive for my tastes. Notion thief is very interesting but I don't think it's earned a spot in my sideboard yet. The sideboard has been a tireless process and it's currently working very well.
