Mirrodin and Delver can bite one —Sept. 15, 2012

So my gf played this at her first constructed FNM last night and didn't have the results we were hoping to see, going (1-3).

First round: Delver (what a friggin surprise) (0-2) - I didn't see much of this myself as I was getting my deck Heroin Hero unceremoniously destroyed at another table. But from the second game that I did get to observe, the problem came from Vapor Snag - such that whenever she would drop an angel or anything worthwhile on the board, here comes another Vapor Snag, Snapcaster Mage, or Restoration Angel to flicker the snap to get the snag. I mean really folks... think up your own deck ideas (this was one of FOUR U/W delver decks out of only 15 players). I'm not really sure where changes could/should be made here except perhaps to move away from Descendants' Path, which sucks, because I personally like that mechanic. Maybe some Fiend Hunters would help. Pacifisms would also have been effective I believe.

Second Round: Mono-black zombies (with a splash of Blood Artist) (0-2) - So I once again didn't see how things played out, but I'm thinking this time the outcome was perhaps due a bit more to the fact my gf is still learning the game. The only reason I say this is because she and her opponent switched decks after the match was done and he was able to overpower her with the deck while she was using his. There needs to be more removal though, definitely, as things like Blood Artist can be HUGE against this deck.

Third Round: Grixis Control (aiming for Bolas) (2-0) - A breakthrough perhaps? Or perhaps not. I played against the same player and was able to overpower him, so I'm not sure here. Observing her second game, however, I did see her making some errors in play (forgetting to use Ajani's +1, not drawing as many cards as possible with Mentor of the Meek, things like that). Overall, she smashed face though. The second game (the one I was able to watch) wasn't even close. He managed to wake up a Slumbering Dragon only to be met by her playing Gisela, Blade of Goldnight for a quick win.

Fourth Round: Mono-black Mirrodin (no really, like 95% of this deck will be rotated in 2 weeks) (0-2) - Am I the only one counting the days until all that Phyrexian whatnot is gone? I didn't get to see any of her games, but she said that every time she would get anything decent on the field, it would get taken out (bite me Gut Shot, Dismember, etc). I can't really comment on this one much other than to say I think this deck becomes a LOT more viable after rotation.

Lesson Learned? This deck needs more creature removal. Sure, ramping and dumping angels is nice, but if they have removal and you don't, you end up on the short end of the stick more often than not. 3x Oblivion Ring can be nice, but there needs to be more. Also, I don't know that Descendants' Path was paying the dividends I was hoping for. Perhaps swapping it for a full blown Mentor of the Meek drawing storm would be better...

Thoughts?

Dear TyWooOne Time, Well my friend tried out his angel deck on AVR game day. It failed. It was an angel massacre. However I thought he built his wrong It was a rainbow deck. Now your going the right way with it and I like the deck so my ideas main board: 1) As Pacifism is only useful against creature based decks i'd kick that into the board and go 3 Oblivion Ring 2) card:Descendants' Path is only useful once you get out a angel so chop that down to three. Othervise it could cycle your deck and with mentor out...3) 2 Avacyn, Angel of Hope you want to get her out.4) More land i'd say a base of 24 since you have a huge amount of 5 and 4 drops.5) I don't like Scroll of Avacyn at all, but it can turn into life gain if needed.Sideboard: 1) card:Tormod's Crypt is useless if you get out Ground Seal either or, and run three of it.2) card:Faith's Shield is much better then card:Ranger's Guile cut guile shield to 4.3) I absolutely love Curse of Exhaustion it is an amazing card and if you ask me it is underused to an extreme. It Should be in every W deck's sideboard.4) You only need 3 Nevermore . 4 is just overkill.

I had a card in mind for your deck but i forgot it. WHen i remember it i will post it.Sincerely, Korlan +1

Thanks for the input!

On the one hand, I can agree that Odric, Master Tactician could prove useful, I just don't know that he's necessary. With the horde of flyers I will end up having, I really think that should be the main win-con. Although I'll definitely have to see how it plays before making the final verdict.

To the more pointed suggestions you gave:

1) I'm totally on-board. O-Ring over Pacifism all day. I'm with ya there.

2) card:Descendants' Path is actually useful in several ways here. First, it lets me drop angels or humans (as those are the only two types in the deck) at zero cost to me. Second, it lets me cycle through the deck at a much faster speed, as those creatures I cannot drop at zero cost are put on the bottom of the library. Thus, if I have multiples out, they help me either cycle creatures or just cycle my library, working as a sort of de-facto draw engine (each resolves separately, so 4x means I could realistically be cycling an added 4 cards per turn). Sure those cards could be mana, but I don't really need mana once the paths are out. Getting a single angel on the battlefield should be easy at that point.

3) Avacyn is definitely one of the bombs here, but so is Gisela. At current I'm wanting to run the 1x of each and will see how it goes. If need be, additional copies can be picked up.

4) Scroll of Avacyn is gone too. It sounded like a helpful piece because of the drawing with a possible life gain, but since the paths work like draw engines anyway, there really was no need. Mentor of the Meek also pairs with Thraben Doomsayer as a nice draw engine too.

5) I'm nervous about the mana base, as, on the one hand 22 seems a bit low, BUT, given that I have 8 rampers, the paths, and Herald of War helps to reduce the cost of all my creatures. So while I can see where it might be some cause for concern, in simulated hands I've seldom ever had to mulligan more than once to get a suitable curve lined up.

6) For the sideboard (I'll tackle them all here) - I've been told to avoid Ground Seal and go with the Crypts. I'm sort of torn and given what I've seen of the meta at my LGS, I don't know that they'll be THAT much of a problem. I'll likely go with the crypts for now as I have those already but would have to pick up the seals. The card:Faith's Shield and card:Ranger's Guile pairing was to ensure that I have the instant protection in both colors. I'd hate to be sitting there with only green mana and a shield while watching the enemy Doom Blade one of my angels. Which ones and how many will depend on what I see in the first game obviously. The shield is preferred, but I'd rather cover my ass than let it hang out there. Lastly, I can drop to 3x Nevermore and that will free up a spot for something else. Any thoughts on what to put in there?

Sorry for the lengthy response, but I wanted to be sure to reply to all your suggestions as they're a great help.

Dear TyWooOne Time,

Pacifism can fill in the sideboard till something better comes along. The reason, if your having a staring match with a Champion of the Parish why waste an entire o ring? Thats for the sideboard. And I don't See Gisela in the deck list. And if your thinking Entreat the Angels only 1 or 2. Cause if you get that when you've got out your mana generators it will be pretty much game over.

                Sincerely, Korlan the killer.

My bad, it's updated now. No Entreat yet. I'm thinking it would make sense later or if I need an added punch.

Thanks again!

if you wanna keep your deck green white why not try Sigarda, Host of Herons ? personally i love descendants path i think it should be a keystone in any tribe deck that has green in the mix. in my opinion take out the scroll in favor of Elixir of Immortality to combat any mill deck and keep your life gain. another option would be add a Goldnight Redeemer for super life. card:Angel of Glory's Rise is another big angel that is extremely human friendly that seems to be hand made for this deck. i cant think of any green ideas at the moment but i have a deck that has a similar build to this that i made for my girlfriend deck:dawn-of-hope hopefully it could be of some help for your deck too. this seems really solid
