I'd replace Giant Growth before Ghostly Flicker , personally. I do like the possible inclusion of Cloudshift , though. Deck still looking good. I still feel like Zealous Conscripts would pull more weight than Nightshade Peddler though. Especially if you add Cloudshift and keep Ghostly Flicker in.

Overall, I think:-2 or 4 Giant Growth -4 Nightshade Peddler +4 Cloudshift +2 Zealous Conscripts and +2 Undying Evil or just +4 Zealous Conscripts

If you're still looking for suggestions, that is.

And check out my deck:super-control-10-01-13-1 deck too, if you're interested in Standard control. I'd love suggestions.

Nightshade Peddler is a huge part of the deck bonded with Izzet Staticaster

There are way easier and more cost efficient forms of spot removal than that combo. Not worth it unless it's a huge creature.

Well, it is reusable and can kill of multiple at once and at instant speed.

I appreciate the suggestions but the Nightshade Peddler + Izzet Staticaster combo is a huge part of this deck and won me too many games to consider taking out. Izzet Staticaster , Restoration Angel and Snapcaster Mage all come with flash so a lone Nightshade Peddler on the field becomes a potential threat just like that. It would be amazing if I could replace him with a 1 cmc instant speed "Target creature gains Deathtouch until end of turn" but unfortunately there isn't one in standard aside from Necrobite which is a bit too expensive.

Also, Giant Growth is absolutely amazing. It makes all my seemingly weak creatures bigger, mucks up combat maths and only costs G. Keeping that in too.

One thing about Zealous Conscripts that I find undesirable is the cmc. Sure, you can flicker her and do some pretty nasty things but I find that Thragtusk and Havengul Lich are better for 5 cmc. Flickering a Thragtusk has so much value and Havengul Lich is just an absolute bomb if you can resolve him, re-animating Snapcaster Mage , Restoration Angel and Izzet Staticaster at instant speed is nasty!

I'm still considering Cloudshift over Ghostly Flicker but so far Ghostly Flicker seems far more promising due to the fact that it has 2 targets and costs blue instead of white (I usually keep my white source open to cast Restoration Angel .

I ran a play-set of Undying Evil in an early build for this deck and was quite happy with them but quite honestly they are quite circumstantial, doesn't work against opponents with things like Detention Sphere , Terminus and Pillar of Flame and I don't have a way of dealing with indestructible creatures. Also, it needs black which is going to make setting up my early mana base a lot more trickier than it already is. (I usually go for GURW at the start, but with Undying Evil I'm going to need to fit in B as well.) After that, I replaced them with 4x Giant Growth and 4x Unsummon and find them much, much better.

Some cards that might help your match-ups against planeswalker decks are: Pithing Needle (to lock them down), Cyclonic Rift (upgrades Unsummon to non-land permanents), or Dreadbore (to blow them out of the water).

Are there any Wizards from Gatecrash that you are looking at?

I've considered those but I'm not sure what to take out for them in my SB atm. More play-testing is needed! Thanks anyway. :)

I've been looking at Duskmantle Seer . It's not quite as good as Dark Confidant but ... it looks promising. Simic Charm is definitely going into my deck though. Maybe a few Rapid Hybridization s in the side? Am considering Dimir Charm over Forbidden Alchemy as well. Not too excited about the other wizards though ...

Don't use Dimir Charm over Forbidden Alchemy . Forbidden alchemy puts one into your hand, and it has a flashback. It also searches through 4 instead of 3. I'd keep forbidden alchemy.

Ah right. I misread the card, was under the impression that Dimir Charm puts a card into your hand as well. Guess I'm sticking with Forbidden Alchemy .

Chromantic Lantern will fix the mana base alot since the mana base can be kinda slow and inconsistent in 5 color

This is very innovative. Are you competitive?? If so, see you at the next GP!! Come take a gander at my Avacyn deck! I like your idea with gates and basics. Rad

ShimmerVoid says... #17

@ blackbaki777: Have you actually playtested it yet? The mana-base is quite consistent. Evolving Wilds and Gatecreeper Vine help fix the land base. I appreciate the suggestion though but Chromatic Lantern is not something I want to run as it doesn't interact with my creatures and I would rather have Forbidden Alchemy in its place.

@ OFABass: Thank you! And yes, I'm quite competitive though I do enjoy dabbling in silly combos so I suppose I'm part spike, part johnny. :P Am going to the London GP so I'll see you there, hopefully!

Still love this deck.

I was playtesting the new mana base and although it is solid when playing your cards, playing an opponents creatures with Havengul Lich was difficult in most matches. Even a single Chromatic Lantern or similar tool would open up the mana base for exploiting both sides of the board. This will probably only matter in games that push into late game where you have Havengul Lich running things.

That is very true 4649matt. I remember the good old times when I took my opponent's Silverblade Paladin and Sublime Archangel and swung for lethal. Though, if I'm already at that point in a game the deck is most likely on the driver's seat already so it makes re-animating the opponent's creature(s) a bit of an overkill.

I have been using this deck list while testing my new lists as a benchmark of sorts. Your wizards bring several levels of hijinks to the mid-game that make it a great testing ground. I can say with certainty you probably play your deck better than I can and yet I have found that this deck is stronger when it has access to their tools as well.

Also, Blind Obedience cuts down significantly on the flexibility of Flash creatures.

January 29, 2013 2:16 p.m.

ShimmerVoid says... #21

Ah yes. Blind Obedience is definitely going to be a pain to deal with. I'll need to make a mental note of that and get my hands on more Abrupt Decay s for my sideboard.

So I have been play testing this deck a lot lately and I have noticed one problem that keeps coming up: the land is too slow. How can you make land drops faster in this deck?

February 18, 2013 10:55 p.m.

(tentative card Dragon's maze)Land M~ enters the battlefield tapped.: Add to your mana pool., , Return ~ to its owner's hand: Search your library for a Gate card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library. If you control ten or more Gates with different names, you win the game.

....not that this new card will be viable for standard per se, but it could be a fun card for your deck regardless.
