To me, every Esper deck should play 4 Reflector Mage. Aside from that, looks like really fun to play.

I don't know how much narset is going to do for you, and if you could, you should probably chuck in Avacyn, but otherwise the deck looks good, also I agree with Countermage

To me, you lose out by trying to max the noncreature threshold for Narset Transcendent. I recommend taking out Day's Undoing for a better source of card advantage, since as a control deck you will be dumping your hand slower than almost every other deck, leaving you open to haste creatures, etc. You go heavy on the 1-for-1 removal which is best in a format where opponents are not making more than 1 card per cast, but you have little method of dealing with a 2/2 Arlinn Kord  Flip wolf (without burning a removal spell). 24 is also a low land count for control, especially one trying to cast Stasis Snare,Ruinous Path, and Void Shatter--requiring 6 unique mana symbols to be able to cast reliably on curve. As such, I recommend cutting Stasis Snare for 2 lands, to have a more reliable game against all decks and a better long game vs other control decks, especially those that have put the monetary investment into Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip. Armed with more land, you could play an X-spell like Epiphany at the Drownyard in place of Day's Undoing: since you only want to use Undoing no earlier than turns 7-8 as a control deck, if you hit lands on curve you will have ~4 decent cards rather than refilling your hand and your opponent's while leaving yourself vulnerable to opponents' haste creatures from the forced turn-pass. Casting undoing can be lethal against you against enemy aggro decks. Epiphany is also an instant, allowing you to hold up mana for counterspells/removal and getting significant card advantage if enemies pass the turn without casts (i.e. especially against other control decks, or decks playing flash creatures like Archangel Avacyn  Flip).

I say keep Ruinous Path over To the Slaughter, as my opinion is that that is a less-efficeint kill spell, as they choose what to sacrifice, but it can be efficient. However, keep it in sideboard against Westvale Abbey  Flip. +1 from a control lover. I agree with replacing Avacyn, and this deck looks great to me.

Try Deploy the Gatewatch for more planeswalker synergy.

@YourGod

I've playtested Deploy the Gatewatch, and the problem with it is by the time I have the mana to use it, most of my planeswalkers are either in my hand or in the grave. I'm taking out Planar Outburst though, so I'll put in and playtest either Deploy or Descend upon the Sinful.

Regarding Deploy the Gatewatch -- read: http://www.channelfireball.com/articles/magic-math-deploy-the-gatewatch/This should indicate a clear no.Coax can only find Emrakul, so it is strictly worse than playing more Emrakul. You are playing no other Eldrazi targets. Unless you are worried about Infinite Obliteration or Pick the Brain, I guess. Which is not a big worry. Even if you would be returning an Emrakul from exile, you could instead just have another one in hand. I could see running 2x Coax mainboard 1x Ulamog 1x Emrakul sideboard, which would give you access to them both game 1 and allow for selection based on mana and board state. But better still I think is just to cut the sideboard Coax.Thoughts - Dragonlord Silumgar, Silumgar's Command are both commonly played as 1-ofs in control due to their possibility to swing the planeswalker game and 2-for-1. At least consider the possibility. Even if Dragonlord gets Drom-Com'd it's at worst a 2-for-1 due to deathtouch.

Thanks for the link!

As for your suggestions about Coax, you've got some good points. Considering them, I'll probably take out one of the Coax for those reasons, but I'll keep one in the situation that I run into Obliteration or Pick the Brain (mostly because the Mardu midrange deck I played against in my last tournament did, in fact, Obliterate Emrakul), which is what I assume the purpose of one-ofs in sideboard is. I did originally run Silumgar in sideboard, but I took him out due to Standard rotation. If you think he's good enough to warrant a spot despite that, I'll stick him back in. The question is, which would be better in the spot, Silumgar himself or Silumgar's Command?

How well do ob and sorin work in your deck? You got dovin to draw you cardshould and gain you life, jace draws you cards, and lili can deal with the small things. Maybe stick them in the board and run more instants for hulk to flas back? Just a thought, nevertheless awesome deck. +1

Hedrix

Sorin works amazingly whenever I get him; he's a fairly high mana cost, but the combination of large loyalty, conditionless card draw and damage on a stick makes him an immediate target, which is good because he can soak up a large amount of damage and distract the opponent from my life total. There have been a couple of times where his +1 revealed Emrakul as well, and that just ended the game right there.

As for Ob, he's more of a conditional walker which is why I only have one of him. He's good card draw and, while the loss of life for drawing is a problem, I draw him when I need him to kill a creature and distract the opponent, which is what he does. I've managed to ult him only once, but that ult did so much work, and I feel that the one-of spot is best for him.

I'll take your advice into consideration, though. I do feel that the number of instants that I have is a bit small for the gearhulks, so I've been wondering what I can spare. What are your thoughts on ditching the Gonti's? They're an experiment that I haven't been able to test yet and I'm still unsure as to how well they'd work here.

Hedrix says... #11

I think gonti is cool, I'm sure he'd be fun to play with. But the only problem is that his usefulness solely relies on your opponent having good cards and you hitting one of them. I'd personally rather have more glimmers or more answers to my opponents threats. So I'd say dump him, either more grasp or more glimmer would be far more useful I'd say.

I was playtesting mine against yours to see some potential tweaks. Was pretty much a dead lock until Sorin turned Emmy; dropped me to 1 life and wiped my board and dumped my hand. Obviously your deck one on its next turn.

That is amazing in a control match, I am going to side it for sure. How does it fair vs aggro? Dead card then or can you stall enough that it still matters?

Umbreomancer says... #14

sitri_ I actually haven't faced that many aggro decks; my local meta at gameday was mostly various (i.e Grixis, Jeskai, and Esper mostly) control shells because that's what won pro tour. I've playtested against aggro decks, and what I've found is that usually, they take game one. I do side out Emrakul then, for things like the Harsh Scrutinys, Lost Legacys, and Flaying Tendrils; those combined with Declaration in Stone and Fumigate keep me alive. I'm still considering putting a Linvala, the Preserver in sideboard against aggro because she's a complete turnaround against them.

Something I just thought of: if there's a lot of aggro in your local meta, a third Liliana, the Last Hope wouldn't be a bad idea. She is simultaneously an early damage-taker and against aggro, it's quite possible she'll kill something (like Veteran Motorist) or shrink it to zero power.

Hey I love this deck but why is ulamog in here? Just doesn't feel right

January 21, 2017 3:13 p.m.

Umbreomancer says... #16

Vampire_Lord it's because he wasn't meant to be in here. My original list had two high-cost creatures as potential finishers: Sphinx of the Final Word and Emrakul, the Promised End, both of whom this deck could get out consistently. With Emrakul now banned, I needed another finisher. Like the description says, I'm all for suggestions, but in the interim I've put Ulamog back in, which is who I was using before Eldritch Moon came out.

A card you could put in the main board would be torrential Gearhulk for ulamog and I way to put in at least some sort of main board counters

January 21, 2017 5:42 p.m.

Vampire_Lord says... #18

Sorry I just saw that you don't want Gearhulks the deck but maybe try a noxious gearhulk or linvala

January 21, 2017 5:47 p.m.

Umbreomancer says... #19

Linvala's nice, and I've tried her a few times. The problem is that she and the gearhulk don't have any survivability; the Sphinx and Ulamog have ways of dealing with removal. I don't know. I'll experiment with them.

I am also confused about what this deck is trying to do Is it super friends or is it going for more instants and sorceries?

January 23, 2017 5:39 p.m.

Umbreomancer says... #21

Both, actually. It runs a fair amount of instants and sorceries because of its nature as a control deck, but my personal belief is that Esper's power is in its planeswalkers right now, so I run a larger-than-normal number of them. I don't run the Oaths, however, because I feel like what they do just doesn't impact the game enough to deserve the slot.

Hey I need some advice I just built my Esper control deck but I need some advice on it Would you mind checking it out

January 24, 2017 8:08 p.m.

Vampire_Lord says... #23

Are you taking this to game day? Also what could I use to replace Lilliana? I am considering building this now

January 28, 2017 11:02 a.m.

Vampire_Lord says... #24

Also why are there no counters in the main deck?!?

January 28, 2017 1:05 p.m.

Umbreomancer says... #25

I've just never liked counterspells, in all honesty. I feel like it's much easier to kill something after it's been played, and I'm really bad at anticipating when I should leave mana open to counter something. I was thinking about swapping the To the Slaughters for the Disallows, though.
