Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind is too expensive for the deck imo. It will be very difficult to cast him with 23 lands, and adding lands just for him would be a mistake. Goblin Electromancer only helps with 8 of your spells, so I'm not sure he's worth it either.

Maybe drop those 6 creatures for 4x Serum Visions and 2x Sleight of Hand or 2x Burst Lightning .

I would also add 4x Steam Vents to replace 4 of your non-basics. Sulfur Falls isn't going to come into play untapped very consistently with only 11 mountain/islands.

Sorry for the repeated posts, but Overmaster isn't legal in Modern.

Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind has been very useful during the late game whenever it comes to that (bearing in mind I only play casual, so far at least!)

I'd love to add Steam Vents in particular, but they're just too expensive at the moment. If If this deck continues to play and playtest as well as it has I'll have to pick up a playset.

I'll look into your other suggestions, they look awesome. Cheers!

The_Squirrel, I disagree about the efficacy of Goblin Electromancer . If I whack Curiosity onto a Guttersnipe or Gelectrode , I want to rattle off as many spells as I can in that turn while drawing cards - the Electromancer has proven immensely powerful in this respect. Other than that, I'd say you had a good point.

I'd be best off siding in your suggestions for the Electromancer vs a control deck, I think?

This deck quite literally smashed it (and everyone) at lunch today, +1.

Nice deck! +1 Cerulean Wisps combo's great with gelectrode. I have a similar deck around gelectrode. The expensive machine that goes PING

Thanks Krapak, that does look like a very useful card. The only thing I could substitute for it though is probably Mana Leak , which has proven too useful to remove. Hmm, maybe Manamorphose , actually... Yeah, I'll try switching it in for Manamorphose , and see how it plays. Cheers!

I'd run Izzet Charm instead of Mana Leak basically the same effect for the same CMC, plus flexibility. Trickbind is very tempting for the sideboard (break combos), along with Shattering Spree (Replicate is beautiful with this deck).

While we're on the topic of replicate...Gigadrowse could basically be a game winner for you.

I'd be tempted to run Gut Shot in place of Gitaxian Probe . Still lets you pay 2 life, but you get something for it in addition to the deck thinning.

Magma Jet is inefficient burn, and you're looking to maximize your damage while minimizing your . Much better 1 CMC options for burnI'd be particularly tempted to do Rift Bolt , which would let you slip an extra instant in on a turn.

Some cool ideas there RobertFischer. The only way to know how well they work for sure is to proxy them in I suppose! I love the look of Gigadrowse , and have tried Izzet Charm during playtesting, with mixed results. Gut Shot is another tricky one, and I'd rather not switch out Gitaxian Probe - it has proven far too useful in all games I've played. I might replace Magma Jet with it and try that out for size. Lots to consider, thanks again!

What's so useful about Gitaxian Probe ? There's a lot of love for that card, but I've never really shared the love.

Need a bit more damage pushed through for the win, but out of mana? Probe.

Looking short on mana, try for a card draw? Probe.

Worried about the red/blue/black deck across the table, check their hand to leave mana open for Mana Leak ? Probe.

Free untap for Gelectrode ? Probe.

Free Curiosity activator on Guttersnipe or Gelectrode ? Probe.

It's a free spell that nets you a card, while thinning your deck. Used with any of the creatures in this deck, there's just never a situation that you aren't glad to have it.

August 1, 2014 7:53 a.m.

Maybe i'm wrong but Blustersquall might be a better alternative for Gigadrowse . Unless the copies count as cast spells for Guttersnipe Fuel.

You're absolutely right - I've just checked some rulings, and the Replicate copies aren't put on the stack. Therefore, they don't count as separate spells... That's disappointing. Blustersquall might well be a better choice. Thanks!

Fun Deck. U/R counter-burn (or as I like to call it, Izzet Over Yet?) is always good, and this one's fairly quick. I disagree with the romoval of Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind but I'm a bit partial because of my experiences with him in my deck, A Curious Case of Death from a Distance. He doesn't break the bank, or the mana curve, and is great for mid & late-game. Maybe he's unnecessary in yours, but in mine, he's almost a must... Though it sounds like the choice was at least a bit difficult.

PloughedJester -- Your two decks are very different, and Niv-Mizzet doesn't seem to fit well here.

The strategy in this deck is to have a single turn with many instants/sorceries cast followed by a pumped creature charge. It's basically a variation of the one-sided-board-wipe-to-face-smash combo.

Your deck is creature control and player pinging with Niv-Mizzet as a midgame utility who becomes a finisher.

Have you considered Browbeat ? Not sure where you'd fit it in, but it's an interesting option.

August 2, 2014 5:47 p.m.

RobertFischer says... #22

I vote against Browbeat . It's one of the great controversies in Magic, but I'm of the opinion that you want to give your opponent as few choices as possible. Letting them decide whether to take 5 damage or give you cards means you will never get what you want. And while you may think that either option on the card is fine, playing out will show you otherwise. 3CMC is also high for this deck, especially since the draw itself isn't too valuable.

August 2, 2014 6:22 p.m.

Mongol says... #23

RobertFischer I'd agree that the 3CMC seems a bit high for this deck.

August 2, 2014 6:35 p.m.

djakes says... #24

Browbeat was in a previous incarnation of this deck, yeah. It didn't make the cut - CMC just too high, and inconsistent in tricky situations.

Thumbs down this deck looks fun, its not budget please reclassify. 200$ is not budget. Otherwise this looks like a fun deck to use.
