As promised in the title, this deck can win you a game on turn 3. 'A turn 3 win with a 20$ deck?' you might ask. I'll show you how this deck works now, but please note that it's a super-budget deck and not meant to be competitive. Maybe I might be tempted to carry this to an FMN in the future and post here how it worked out. Still, the variant I would suggest is the classic kitchentable game with some friends.
Every single card choice explained
Creatures
-
Kiln Fiend: The quintessence of this deck and for the Turn 3 OTK. I love the mechanic, the artwork and even the flavor text... but i get off the track.
-
Nivix Cyclops: Essentially it's the same as Fiendy over there, but I like the 4 toughness, because neither Bolts, nor Shocks can kill it.
-
Delver of Secrets
: Cool, since we can flip pretty fast, because we have so many instants and sorceries in this deck.
Spells
Lands
- 9 Islands, 7 Mountains and 4 Swiftwater Cliffs. Pretty simple. In the end I decided to take out the Reefs, because I want everything to be under ~1$.
Sideboard
-
By Force: Artifact removal. Nothing more, nothing less
-
Cryptic Serpent: Nice turn 4/5 play.
-
Guttersnipe: VS lifegain. You can play this one on turn 3 and kill with the combo on turn 4.
-
Dive Down: In case you need extra protection
-
Tormod's Crypt: Gravewipe for . Thumbs up.
-
Peek: Look at their hand to see potential threats + cantrip? I like it!
Turn 3 OTK Combo
If you haven't recognized it so far the oneshot is the turn 2 Kiln Fiend and then e.g. Kiln Fiend + assault strobe + distortion strike + Apostle's Blessing. I like the shocked faces of my opponents when i pull that off. If your hand contains these 4 cards, 2 Islands and 1 Mountain, the game is basically won.
Tough Matchups
I'm a pretty casual player and not really familiar with the meta, but of the decks I've experienced so far, the most dangerous are as following:
-
Aggro/Burn, because it's really fast and you will at least need 3 turns to get the combo off.
-
Black disruption, because it makes you discard things or you have to reveal your hand and the only combopiece you can afford to put in your graveyard are the dodges.
-
Lifegain, because you can't pull off the OTK combo, since it's exactly 20/22 damage. But I have to say, that you can wait for turn 4 ofc to play a fourth spell and deal 6 more damage.
Possible Upgrades
Creatures
3x Thing in the Ice
instead of Delver of Secrets
just because the flip is a gamechanger.
Spells
3x Manamorphose instead of Peek and put 3 Stubborn Denial in the sideboard. Manamorphose is perfect.
3x Lightning Bolt instead of Burst Lightning obviously.
1x Bedlam Reveler instead of Cryptic Serpent.
3x Relic of Progenitus instead of Tormod's Crypt
2x Shattering Spree instead of By Force.
Maybe Serum Visions over Opt, depends on your playstyle.
Lands
I would suggest Fastlands and Shocklands, if you really want the deck to be a higher tier.
