Round 1:
Game 1:
I arrived at the shop a few minutes late, and the round had just started. So I faced off against Bearded Man, who was scheduled for a bye. He was running a really quick rackdos deck. He won the die roll and went first. By turn 3 he had a Spike Jester with Madcap Skills and put me into the single digits. By the time I died, my deck had just put its final pieces together and was about to start gaining momentum. (0-1)
Game 2:
I sideboarded in some Mizzium Mortars and was able to kill his first few creatures with Searing Spears and Mizzium Mortars and brought his deck to a crawl and then I finished strong. (1-1)
Game 3:
I didn't draw enough kill spells to halt him like before, but enough to slow him down to get my deck running. At the end of my final turn, I was at 4 life and he was at 1. A misplay from the previous turn is what left him at one life, and then he finished me off (on my second to last turn, I had an extra mana which should have been used to flashback Artful Dodge to trigger [[guttersnipe]s ability, but I honestly thought I was going to be able to finish the job the following turn, but instead I left him at 1 life). (1-2)
Lesson Learned:
It is ok to flashback cards just to trigger guttersnipes ability when you have the free mana. also, Bearded Man went on to be undefeated and won the tournament.
Round 2:
I played against an orzhov deck that really didn't do much. He had a terrible mana curve and I just hammered him for about 20 min straight for 2-0.
Lessons Learned:
Kid went on to be dead last, maybe I should have been a little easier on him?
Round 3:
Game 1:
Guy had a Boros deck that was strong, but was not prepared to handle me. First game was pretty even. Turn 2 brought out Boros Mastiff and I summoned Invisible Stalker. Turn 3 he brought out Viashino Firstblade, swinging out dealing me 6 damage. My next turn I brought out a guttersnipe. Turn 4, Ajani, Caller of the Pride used his plus one on viashino to make him a 3/3 and he attacked me for 5. My next turn I killed it with [[mizzium mortars] and cyphered Hands of Binding on stalker. Turn 5, he brought out Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded to draw a card. My next turn I brought out Markov Blademaster and my second guttersnipe. Turn 6 another viashino dealing me another 4 damage. I tapped out on spells to finish him off, leaving me with just a few life. (1-0)
Game 2:
I sideboarded in some creature removal to handle his aggro creatures and slow him down some. Second game I kept his 2 Boros Mastiffs pinned down with Hands of Binding and Last Thoughts ciphered to Invisible Stalker and another Invisible Stalker enchanted with Dual Casting. Later on, having Guttersnipe and Nivmagus Elemental, i just kept growing and dealing damage while he just pinged me for one with a Intrepid Hero a very one-sided game. (2-0)
Lessons Learned:
Even though I squeaked out a win the first game, my sideboarding made the difference between a close win and a solid win.
Round 4:
Game 1:
This kid had watched one of my previous games and knew what I was going to do. I brought out Guttersnipe turn 3 and he killed him instantly. I drew another Guttersnipe turn 4 and played him, only to be killed straight away. It was very unlikely I draw a third and without it my deck was missing a vital piece. So it just couldn't get rolling that hand, but I did get to see his deck which was white/black flying/lifelink spirit/vampire tokens which he mostly used to activate Cartel Aristocrat. I could tell his deck was meant to make it a blocker, but with my deck revolving around unblockability, he used it to attack. (0-1)
Game 2:
So I subbed in mizzium to handle his tokens, and hounds to help against creature removal. The deck worked like a charm. (1-1)
Game 3:
On my next to last turn, my 3/3 markov with Last Thoughts drew me a guttersnipe. Final turn, I triggered guttersnipe with the remaining spells in my hand for game. Game three, I kept a hand with only one creature, Nivmagus Elemental, and he killed it turn 2 after I had pumped it. :( I didn't get a creature for the remainder of the game and he kicked my butt. :'( (1-2)
Lesson Learned:
Make sure to sideboard in [[counterflux] against creature removal. I thought I had but turns out I didn't. I need to know when to mulligan. I need to evaluate my starting hand not just based on how it will play with respect to my own deck, but how it will fair against the challenges my opponents bring to the table.
Overall:
Pretty successful (6-4). Independent of the first game, I decisively won the second game every round. So when I lost, I made the necessary improvements along with a little luck to securely win the next game. Only lost matches due to errors on my part (bad plays, sideboarding, and keeping hands I shouldn't). I look forward to playing with this deck some more to cut down on the errors and I might place.
p.s. I sat beside a fella for most of the night who played a very fast green-red aggro deck who wanted to play me after the tournament because of my unusual izzet deck. I won the first game because he was mana flooded when he only has 18 in the whole deck. (1-0) Second game he came out swinging fast, by turn 2 I was at 9 life. It didn't help that I had to mulligan down to 5 cards and still didn't get anything. (1-1) Game 3 was more even but I still came out on top. (2-1) It is nice to know that my deck has the capability to beat the top 2 decks, now I just need to get there and prove it in the tournament.
