"Izzet" really a combo, or just good synergy?

Saljen, Based on my experience pre-Theros, Pyromancer plus cyphers has a high enough token production as it is. I want to test Purphoros as is for now, as the deck usually wins by turn 5(Turn 4 on an exceptional hand), so I'm currently questioning if he's fast enough.

okay, I would HIGHLY recommend using Rapid Hybridization /...for some reason EVERYONE has overlooked this AMAZING card as it is a Beast Within almost for 1 CMC. You can just use your Lightning Strike to take care of anything. Like a Kalonian Hydra or an Archangel of Thune ..just highly useful

Inces, I actually had been play testing a version of the deck with Rapid Hybridization . I am happy someone else sees the greatness of the card, though this also tells me that I should probably update the list here...

Can you explain why you get a 5/6 and not a 3/4... because as I see it you attack turn 2, with 2 trait doctoring over you, so you get 2 spells from it, you exile both so +1/+1 from each, right?

Nivmagus Elemental gets two counters for each spell exiled.

I feel so dumb right now... lol have you thought about Elite Arcanist?, Exile teleportal, you can feed Nivmagus, make guttersnipe ability to deal 2 dmg, or just cast teleportal use it!

IMO, Hands of Binding over Trait Doctoring. It's actually really useful if it can get through, since you can just keep their guys tapped down.

@Vampire Army, I would laugh my ass off if that ever came up in a game.

You might consider throwing in Barrage of Expendables for even more synergy. It give those 1/1 elemental a bit more use as you can deal 1 damage directly and your Young Pyromancer will just spawn another when you sac it. This can end up doing a ton of damage throughout the match and makes your opponent have to deal with that as opposed to just having to kill Nivmagus (alternativly you can just exile the spell so you always have a 1 mana spell on the field) :). Also I like using Dragon Mantle in case your opponent can get blockers out( this also gives you a 1 mana spell on the field at all times to exhile. They may not be as fast as Hidden Strings but if you keep 2 of each you are more versatile.

@Vagard - You cannot exile abilities. Dragon Mantle has an activated ability, not a spell.
October 9, 2013 12:26 a.m.
hmm don't I feel dumb. I guess I thought since it works with cipher its would with that as well, but I guess cipher is considered a "copy" of a sorcery, still i'd like some feedback on the first part of my comment

I'm seriously confused by your comment, Vagard. Barrage of Expendables 's thing is an ability, not a spell, so Young Pyromancer won't spawn another token. Abilities are not the same as spells. Also, this means that you can't exile it using Nivmagus Elemental . Also super confused about how Dragon Mantle can exile stuff.

Nivix Cyclops not only slows them down but in a similar deck i've had him hit a maximum of 19, but averagely get him to a 7/4 most turns. Also i would say to get the Hands of Binding in, they just do so much in this deck, maybe take out the teleportals as the hands give you near evasion in most situations

I know Trait doctoring is great just because it's a one drop cipher card that ALWAYS has a target but what does it actually DO for you? If you use it to boost devotion it's temporary at best, I'd replace two with Hands of Binding and one with Last Thoughts for draw power.

The reason can be summed up by "one-drop". Hands of Binding is good for getting a creature through, but during early game they may not have a creature out yet, which slows my combo down as I lack a legal target. Also, being able to use less mana allows the combo to get more speed and gives me more available mana for responses. Sure, in a vaccum Hands of Binding is better, but in practice it is to limiting.

I've tried for weeks to get wins at FNM with an Izzet deck similar to this one, and after countless losses I came to realize that it is impossible. It hurt my heart to tear it apart, but I can give you some tips based upon what I've learned.
Take out Lightning Strike for Magma Jet , the Scry 2 from the jet is incredibly helpful, especially in a situation where you end up praying for a Turn / Burn because your opponent has a shitbeast creature on the battlefield.
Take out Steam Augury , the 4 CMC is just too much for this deck. If you were running Spellheart Chimera , this card is useful, but when you base your deck around the idea of low drop cards that synergize with your creatures, this card underperforms every time.
The cards that helped me out in tough spots were Blustersquall , Voyage's End , Rapid Hybridization , and Dispel .
My new deck is Prognostic Control and I'm hoping it fares a little better than the last one.

Instead of Steam Augury which would not give you any advantage without Spellheart Chimera , you may add a couple of Bident of Thassa in order to fill your hand with cards. I would add to your manabase also Temple of Deceit because of scry and access to black to splash Dimir Keyrune whicha would ramp you a little bit and also play the encoded unblockable arctifact creature.

The main purpose of Steam Augury in this deck is to dig for unblockable enablers. If I can get the damage in enough for consistent draws off the Bident, then I likely have a good enough board position to be winning the game(This deck can win rather consistently by turn 4-6 against most current decks). I may try it for the ability that forces the opponent to swing though, so it could work. Thanks for the suggestion.

It might be nice for you to know what cipher cards do not add anything to devotion so having Thassa, God of the Sea in there will only be used for the scry ability. Its because the Cipher card is exiled, not in play, and you cast it when you deal combat damage to a player

Purphoros, God of the Forge and Young Pyromancer synergize incredibly well. Every time you cast a spell, you get a 1/1 creature AND 2 damage to their life (it creates a psuedo guttersnipe effect). It works even better if you're running Molten Birth .
I'd suggest running 2x Purphoros and running 3x molten birth. It gives you a chance at a repeatable combo that is incredibly powerful.
