@Lizen unfortunately I don't know yet. I haven't been able to take the finished project to FNM yet and none of my friends play mono-black (at least not well). I'll be posting FNM results in an update next week.

@Skulist I may be dropping the Dissolve s for Counterflux s, but I'm not sure yet. The overload on flux doesn't play well in standard and other than the cannot be countered (which is very nice btw) the spell is okay at best, while on the other hand Dissolve lets me scry and the colorless mana is actually really helpful if I get stuck with a bunch of islands. I would say Counterflux would be a good side card in case your playing control ("I counter your counter with another counter") but definitely not main board. When I get some more suggestions and feedback I'll make a maybe board and Counterflux will definitely be on it. Unfortunately, it's just not very applicable in the current format.

I really dig on this list!
From playing around with it in the playtest engine, you may want to find room for another Island for at least 23 lands. This list has some high value high drops and counterspells/burn which are less effective if you get behind on lands.
(you might also consider clearing comments as some are around a year old and no longer relevant to the current build / standard)
I look forward to seeing where this goes.

@4649matt Thanks for taking the time to playtest! I'm heavily considering adding another land, but so far I haven't had much trouble with mana screw when I've played the deck. Plus, I don't know quite what to take out. Any idea what might be the best mainboard cut? Or maybe perhaps drop a card on sideboard and put the island there?

I love the deck idea, I am running a similar deck list this week to my FNM with less creatures and more burn. UR Burn list feel free to leave any comments or suggestions. Happy Brewing!

Wow! Thanks for all the support guys:) I'm humbled by being able to help you guys build Izzet Decks. Niv-Mizzet pride!
@4649matt I'm going to pass on the island for now because so far I haven't had any trouble gaining blue mana. If anything my red is what screws me haha thanks for the suggestion though! I'd love to hear more!:)

+1 for the innovative build for a mid-range izzet deck. In my opinion its a little permanent heavy in contrast to the izzet playstyle. I would take out Swan Song and Shock in place for 2xIzzet Charm , 2xDissolve , and a additional Magma Jet . This is so you have a more versatile approach. I understand running Shock for your Guttersnipe or Young Pyromaster combo but Swan Song can give a opponent the extra damage they need to get you down low. It does fit in your curve excellently but I find it as a double-edged sword. As for my suggestions they gravitate around being able to shape the situation as it changes. I love the scry mechanic and Izzet Charm is a high potential card that is commonly overlooked.
I Heard You Like Counters is my take on a more late game control variant. This is mostly due to the heavy amount of removal and aggro which deems creatures as cannon fodder. If you can give me any suggestion on the build it'd be appreciated.

How would you feel about removing 1 Magma Jet and 1 Syncopate and putting in 2 Izzet Charm ?
May 16, 2014 12:27 a.m.
Nikolai1204 says... #15
I actually removed Izzet Charm because the drawbacks were too much. Consider, it only counters non-creature spells and only if the person doesn't have 2 mana untapped, it only damages creatures, and you have to discard 2 if you draw. If it straight up countered a non-creature spell, damaged creature or player, and let you draw one but no discard then I would love it but I'm probably asking too much. Don't get me wrong this is a great card, and I'd even sideboard it but it's spread too thin with too little result for me to use it in this deck. Plus, I really like the tap x of Syncopate and the Scry 2 (and the ability to hit players) of Magma Jet . Thanks for the suggestion though!:)

i think you need more frostburn weird and skullcrack to add devotion and have an answer to either sphinx rev or ajani ultimate as those are real threats to this deck late game if they run control. just a thought

I like Skullcrack as a sideboard. Understand though that in this deck you don't need devotion nor do you really want devotion. You want Thassa and Keranos' effects for this strategy, not their creature forms.

Great deck, really helped me narrow the focus of my deck, which has a very similar feel! +1

Very nice deck concept but there is a lot of stuff I would change:
For a deck based around instants and sorceries, it has a lot of cards that are neither! You want more than a third of your deck boosting your Chimeras, making elementals with Pyromancer, and killing your opponents with Guttersnipe.
Not sure what Thassa does for you, as there's no way to turn her on and your main creatures are either evasive (Spellheart Chimera ), not based on attacking (Guttersnipe ), or focused on making expendable, weenie rush tokens (Young Pyromancer ). The scrying is nice, especially with Keranos, but it's just not worth 3 mana.
I'd also cut AEtherling and the planeswalkers - maybe leave a Jace or two but Ral Zarek seems a bit weaker. Your main win conditions are your creatures and burn spells as well as Keranos - there's no need to dilute that.
RUN IZZET CHARM. Run 4. It's just so versatile. It kills potentially troublesome creatures. It filters your hand and moves through your deck to find answers or win conditions. It counters planeswalkers and Sphinx's Revelation . It does everything. Let me put it this way - I've seen many U/W/R control decks or Delver of Secrets run this IN MODERN. (Also, Young Pyromancer is another Modern staple and I'd run 4 in place of a Guttersnipe and a Chimera).
Another very versatile answer you can try is Turn /Burn . For 5 mana, it's often a double kill spell, and it will take out any troubling creature, even gods!
So, ultimately my suggestions are: -2 AEtherling , -1 Thassa, God of the Sea , -1 Guttersnipe , -1 Spellheart Chimera , -1 Ral Zarek , -1 Jace, Architect of Thought (note - I'd add a few copies to the SB for control matchups), -2 Swan Song , -3 Shock , +2 Young Pyromancer , +4 Izzet Charm , +1 Magma Jet , +1 Lightning Strike , +2 Turn /Burn , +1 Island, +1 Mountain.
Awesome and very fun deck though!

Have you tossed around the idea of Mutavault s, as a two or three of? Mostly for blocking purposes.

This is a thing of beauty. I playtested it a couple of times just now and with even just 3-4 lands on the board it's able to do a lot relatively quickly. Great work!

I'm a huge fan of Izzet, I really like the guild and I'm trying constantly to build something around blue and red. I aggre 120% with okreps. I think that the power of Izzet doesn't come from creatures and either planeswalkers. and you want to play some creatures that get its total value only if you have more than 1/3 of deck as sorceries and instants. I'm not sure about Izzet Charm in Standard though.. I like the card but heavy creatures is the current meta (besides ESPER). I would run two instead of Shock (I don't like this card very much...
+1 from me. its really nice to see people trying to go out of the Normal Curve of Mono Black, Esper Control and RG Monsters, thats all I've seen in a long time here... so boring
