HIDE Right now the most popular tron decks to play is clearly: U/W "Gifts" Tron, RG Tron and Mono-blue Tron. This is sadly but true right now also for a very good reason! They are very competitive decks for more than one reason. But tron is very one sided, and can be kinda boring since they always win thorugh either Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, Karn Liberated or
Mindslaver
About this im sure most tron players would agree right :) ?
But on to the point... Why U/R? Well first of, its because I am a very big fan of the izzet guild and started playing it as my first deck when RTR came out. Izzet is extremely fun to play, there is almost never a limit to what extremely insane things you can do with the combination of a little blue and some red. neither does it have any problems getting in to the top tier decks of modern play, a very good example would be U/R Storm, this deck type has been played for a long time, but was first really considered a top tier deck when RTR pro tours started, since then this deck type has been in the lead of the MTG top tiers, so a very good deck... Not to mention U/R twin... don't even get me started, this deck is right now considered one of the best modern decks out there, if not the one! But even with the speed and awesome infinite combos there is one thing all izzet players always hungers for "a heavy play style", right? I know by myself as a huge izzet fan, that the guilds biggest issue by far is it's capability to produce consistent heavy spells. Yes the izzet can throw a lot of devastating spells very cheap with cards like Goblin Electromancer or Epic Experiment and lots of other cards and tricks, but where its weakness lays is to landing these tricks consistent due to the lack of lands...
So here we are with two very competitive deck types. The one lacks opportunities and the other lacks a stable structure, therefore i decided to mix these two decks types together, and do not underestimate it. I have played this deck quite a lot on the program cockatrice where you can play online magic for free, (you can find it on the wepsite woogerworks.com) and it has done extremely well against various deck types. And compared to other tron decks, this is even more fun, so before further we do let's get into it :)
Maindeck explained
I'll try to make this short so, I won't go in depth with the whole tron principle, there are the Urza lands, Karn, Ugin, Emrakul and "the map" ofcause. Those are all (if you ask me or any other tron player) beneficial for a tron deck to work out well in the competitive lines. But talking about the other cards, i have included those who would be able to get us the win in other ways than just the usually Emrakul or whatever.
Invoke the Firemind not espesially good when it comes down to it, but tron needs card draw, and tron needs direct damage, and the fact that you can choose between two options gives you the oppotunity to run only 2 of these, and it's great for making the deck less one sided.
Banefire woaw... is all I have to say, this card usually goes ahead and win the game for you in situations it would seem hopeless. urza lands + banefire = heavy mother biiiib* BURN...
Blast of Genius
, this is what i meant with saying that the izzet guild can have some extremely insane things to do. Well, lets say you are all forced out, you draw into this card and are already sitting with emrakul on your hand, with no mana to cast him. So Instead you draw three cards and discard him, ladies and gentlemen thats 15 damage to the head, in most situations game over.
Gifts Ungiven hmm... Why? i don't know, maybe i should go ahead and remove this shitty card, I hate it so much infact so much that when it hits the field under a opponents control lets say one whose playing reanimator I could rage quit immediately. No ofcause not, but lets just say this is really a broken card. It gives you tons of oppotunities.
Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre In opposite of Kozilek this guy is good against removal except from maybe Path to Exile and so on. But also only one copy of this mighty guy. The biggest reson for only having one of each eldrazi , is because Gifts Ungiven doesn't give us the oppotunity to hand in two identical cards.
All Is Dust well... i don't run any colored permanents, so why not?
Finally i've chosen Izzet Signet and Prophetic Prism for some nice manafix. as for the rest i don't feel like explaining since the are pretty obvious.
Sideboard explained
To do it short, the sideboard cards are ofcause or obvoiusly to go against decks, the deck wouldn't normally do well against. As for example U/W control =
Rending Volley
, artifact deck = Hurkyl's Recall and burn or something likely = Witchbane Orb and Spellskite, tokens = Pyroclasm and ofcause Relic of Progenitus is for reanmiator decks...
Final thoughts
The deck has done very well so far and I may end up buying it, but Im sure that it still is very open for improvement, therefore help and suggestions would be nice alongside with upvotes ofcause! :D
But don't forget that this deck is made to change the thoughts of tron, if you have a different tron deck or are going to make one after seing this deck then go ahead and show me!
BTW i may seem a bit criticizing when it comes to normal tron decks, and to you guys it may sound like this deck is both better and more fun to play... Well it's true that I' find it more fun to play, but of course it's nowhere close to other tron decks, "competitive talking" If it were, it would already be more popular right? ;D
