Looks fun for casual! I see you have Goblin Electromancer in the maybeboard, I would go ahead and throw him in there. Maybe to make it abit more competative you could remove the 2x Pyre Charger s and 1x Prodigal Pyromancer and add in some basic burn spells to put that electromancer to work. Maybe some Brimstone Volley s, Flames of the Firebrand , or something fun along those lines.+1 for the fun idea of making Niv-Mizzet and Jace work togethor!

Thank you. Ol' Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind is rapidly becoming my favorite Legendary Creature, and I can't wait to try out the new Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius , though I can't help but feel that in this particular deck Firemind would work better. I'm waiting on the official release for Return to Ravnica on Goblin Electromancer so I can stock up. As for the other things in the maybe board, I've been having problems with Arrest and other artifact/enchantment situations. Thanks for the suggestions.

How about throwing in one Curiosity in case someone you're playing really pisses you off.

So far no one's made me mad enough to want to do the famous Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and Curiosity combo infinite on them. Besides, this is for casual play. Thanks for viewing though.

Thank you, vishnarg. I do like Jace Beleren . He's my favorite planeswalker and either version of Niv-Mizzet is my favorite creature.

I would recommend Isochron Scepter . I hope you like your deck and see my decks if you want to.

Wow! Thanks, qwertyking!! That should really help. Essence Scatter s, Lightning Bolt s and Counterspell s on demand!

Hey if you have Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind in there try using Jace, Memory Adept insta win if you make yourself draw 20 cards with Firemind on the field.

Isochron Scepter has got to be one of the most annoying cards in the world

January 13, 2013 8:18 a.m.

DerpyPhoenix, it actually hasn't done me as much good as you might think so far. Maybe I just have bad luck.

Burn tends to walk all over this deck. Suggestions, anyone?

4x card:Talrand's Invocation and 4x card:Krenko's Command combo well with Guttersnipe (which you should add another of). Izzet Charm can offer a way to counter burn spells, take out creatures, and draw cards; the Izzet Keyrune allows you to deal combat damage and draw cards while forcing the opponent to deal with the creature via burn within a limited time frame.

I understand that this is for casual but you might take a gander at my deck Delver of OH GOD IT BURNS!. It might give you some ideas!

tmloyd, thank you. You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

you only have about 7 actual targets for Goblin Electromancer to affect. i would either cut back on him, cut him altogether or, better yet, put in some more instants and soceries with a bit higher costs. preferably with extra colorless mana. higher-costed instants also make great targets for Isochron Scepter as well. a bit more card-drawing might be in order as well. i feel like Goblin Electromancer also pairs well with cards that have the overload mechanic.

What is the point of Jace Beleren here? Would you ever use his ultimate? because this doesn't look like the kind of deck that will be milling, Jace architect is probably a much better choice

March 11, 2013 3:09 a.m.

casey, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Isochron Scepter can imprint with a spell with more than 2 CMC, even if that cost has been artificially reduced by something like Goblin Electromancer. Also, what sort of instants/sorceries do you recommend besides mainboarding Cyclonic Rift?

SuperSkene I would love to have a Jace, Architect of Thought in here, but I don't have the cash. I use poor man's Jace instead. I use poor-man's Jace to add drawing capability in order to help me hit my one-offs and two-offs better. As Casey said, he's in there for drawing purposes. I don't really care about his ultra (even though older versions of this deck used to rely on milling.)

Also, thanks for the input, both of you.

you are absolutely correct. my bad. i think maybe taking out the Hover Barriers for two more Cyclonic Rifts would be a good idea. that card will just win games.

In that case have you considered replacing the Jace with a Staff of Nin? That way your opponents can't benefit from your Jace and you have the additional use of burn.

March 11, 2013 4:01 p.m.

SuperSkene, I don't really care about Jace's Ultimate anymore. I would only use his +2 to keep him alive, and would mainly use his -1 draw. As such, he could come out on turn 3 and let me draw an extra card every turn up 'til turn 6 assuming I never used his +2. Staff of Nin, on the other hand, would only come out on turn 6 or 7 (if I missed a land drop), and yeah, the burn would be nice, but I think I'd rather have the drawing a little earlier. However, this did give me a different idea: Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind out for one more Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius. They both come out turn 6, but Dracogenius is like Staff of Nin on mana-powered steroids. Thoughts? And as always, thanks for your help.

casey, I'll try to get at least one more Cyclonic Rift, in that case. I can already see its usefulness without having even tested it in my deck yet.

i would play Judge's Familiars over the Spiketail Drakelings and maybe over an Essence Scatter. You don't have a ton of early plays and those can be nice. they can trade as a blocker if necessary and can definitely slow down your opponent and allow you to stabilize a little easier.
