My first attempt at a casual, yet competitive EDH deck without breaking the bank or using the Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond
combo (because it's not a fun way to win, imo). Also excluding other cards that just make everyone have a bad time, like Contamination.Overview:Mono-black Zombie tribal. Mono-black because it can be quite powerful (black is a colour that tells you to play more black) and mana fixing is no problem. Zombies because the flavour is delicious. Sidisi, Undead Vizier is amazing! You can tutor 3-4 times in a game with her at the helm. Thanks to reanimation effects, you can choose to put her in the graveyard when she dies to recast her a little cheaper. The main Idea of this deck is to build an army of X/X Zombies, where X is a big number (thanks to a bunch of Lords and things like Coat of Arms and Door of Destinies), then enable one of the win cons, including just smashing everyone in the face with Intimidate, Fear or Swampwalk. It also uses blacks strengths: tutoring, sacrificing for benefit, some life-drain, good removal, topping off with some decent card-draw.Card breakdown:
Token generation: Ghoulcaller Gisa, Grave Titan, Cemetery Reaper, Endless Ranks of the Dead, Army of the Damned, Liliana's Reaver, Diregraf Colossus, Dark Salvation, Liliana, the Last Hope (if lucky)
Card draw: Syphon Mind, Decree of Pain, Underworld Connections, Skullclamp (Note: In case of accidental big card draw, apply Reliquary Tower, Cryptbreaker. See a judge if symptoms persist)
Lords and pseudo-lords: Boneknitter, Cemetery Reaper, Death Baron, Lord of the Undead, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, Risen Executioner, Undead Warchief, Zombie Master, Coat of Arms, Caged Sun, Door of Destinies, Obelisk of Urd
Reanimation and return-to-hand: Lord of the Undead, Zombie Apocalypse, Rise of the Dark Realms, Mortuary Mire, Unholy Grotto, Ever After, Nim Deathmantle, Sheoldred, Whispering One, Relentless Dead, Beacon of Unrest, Gravespawn Sovereign, Liliana, the Last Hope
Life gain: Pontiff of Blight, Exsanguinate, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Whip of Erebos, Ormendahl, Profane Prince
Life loss: Underworld Connections, Cryptbreaker
Tutor: Sidisi, Undead Vizier (many times!)
Board-wipes: Noxious Ghoul with with either Army of the Damned, Endless Ranks of the Dead, or Ghoulcaller Gisa. Decree of Pain, Black Sun's Zenith, Mutilate
Removal: Silence the Believers, Liliana of the Dark Realms, Dark Salvation, Call to the Grave, Grave Pact, Attrition, Plaguebearer, Sudden Spoiling (sort of, it can kill indestructible), Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, Liliana, the Last Hope (small things, so shouldn't hit much)
Big Mana: Caged Sun, Sword of the Animist, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Crypt of Agadeem, Liliana of the Dark Realms, Cabal Coffers, Black Market
Things that like more mana: Exsanguinate, Black Sun's Zenith, Silence the Believers, Dark Salvation
Swamps Matter: Liliana of the Dark Realms, Mutilate, Korlash, Heir to Blackblade
Killing opponents: Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Exsanguinate, Gempalm Polluter
Artifact/enchantment removal: Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger ;)
Non-zombies(!): Ghoulcaller Gisa, Grave Titan, Sheoldred, Whispering One, Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. (Can you blame me?)
Notable Combos:
Noxious Ghoul and anything that gives you many zombies.
Vengeful Dead and a board wipe (also a win con).
Gravecrawler
+
Skullclamp
, 2 mana repeatable draw 2 cards at sorcery speed. Note: this only works before you have any lords out (so never, I guess...)
Nim Deathmantle (aside from reanimating) makes my non-Zombies Zombies, buffing them and protecting them from Noxious Ghoul and Call to the Grave
Whip of Erebos targets: Vengeful Dead in response to a board wipe to win; get a second trigger on Gray Merchant of Asphodel; Mikaeus, the Unhallowed to reanimate your board in case of wipe; Pontiff of Blight, to quickly gain life (shouldn't need if you have whip); Zombie Master or Zombie Trailblazer to give everyone swampwalk, make a couple of swamps, swing to win.
Sudden Spoiling will kill anything your opponent is silly enough to block with (split second FTW!) when you send a hoard of Zombies (tokens permitted) at them! (This includes indestructible!). Just be wary that +1/+1 counters, lords and other buffs still apply to the spoiled creatures. And this works well as a defensive or to help out another player (good politics card).
Strionic Resonator with any of Diregraf Colossus, Fleshbag Marauder, Gempalm Polluter, Grave Titan, Relentless Dead, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Liliana's Reaver, Noxious Ghoul, Relentless Dead, Sheoldred, Whispering One, Vengeful Dead, Door of Destinies, Skullclamp, Sword of the Animist, Mortuary Mire, Black Market, Call to the Grave, Endless Ranks of the Dead, Grave Pact, Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger (cast and attack triggers!).
"When Relentless Dead dies (possibly exploited to Sidisi, Undead Vizier, Attrition) you pay to return Relentless Dead to your hand and another Zombie to the battlefield!"
Ever After on Sidisi, Undead Vizier and another creature, Ever After resolves, Sidisi, Undead Vizier trigger, sac Sidisi, Undead Vizier to tutor Ever After. Rinse, repeat. (Not a fan of infinite combos, but infinite mana would make this a 'return all creatures from your graveyard to the battlefield'.)
Win Cons:
The aforementioned combos, essentially.
Things I've found:
REMOVED: Graveborn Muse is best played before you have a huge army, (you often start building quite early, as play tests have found) or you'll draw your whole deck, lose all your life, and cry. (Feels like an early game card to help you get what you need)
Only play Sidisi, Undead Vizier IF you have something to sac, and something you want to tutor! a 4/6 deathtoucher is great, tutoring as well is AMAZING! Don't waste the opportunity.
Underworld Connections feels safer in this deck than Phyrexian Arena. If the opponents cut off your few life gain cards, the arena puts you on a clock. The Connections feels safer, and with Caged Sun and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx (etc) floating around, giving up 1 land for card draw isn't a big deal. (Plus the connections is WAY cheaper!)
Will add to this description as I think of things and as I test the deck. Thanks for reading! Tell me what you think. :)
I swapped out Scourge of Nel Toth for Helldozer. Thoughts on this? I figured the extra devotion is worth more than 1 flyer that will sometimes be reanimated. I'm more likely to want hordes out than sacrificing 2 for 1.
