Shu yun seems pretty bad here. While most of your creatures have some form of protection or evasion, or upside in the form of haste or etb effects built in, Shu Yun has none. and while you have ways of protecting him, you are just netting card disadvantage trying to protect him on your opponents turn, and then on your own turn you aren't going to be getting nearly enough upside from him. Monastery Mentor, while suffering from a similar lack of built in protection, can get value the turn you play him if you play him on curve and then probe, and would probably make a better finisher.

Great Deck! I was just thinking that Glacial Fortress and Hallowed Fountain could be substituted with Mystic Gate. You still get the Mana Fixing Options you need, but without any drawbacks.

Personally, I feel this deck would be better as a standard deck, but this is interesting none the less. : )

Also, I personally feel like Hallowed Moonlight is really only good against twin and elves. I feel like Grafdigger's Cage is just better, as it sticks. Torpor Orb works, too.

Also, I feel as though Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest shouldn't be here. He isn't very good.

July 5, 2015 4:33 p.m.

scorpix & Chronoloco- In regards to Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest. I have tried Monastery Mentor, Ojutai Exemplars, Thundermaw Hellkite, and other options at the top end and Shu Yun continually out performs them (with the exception of Thundermaw, but the deck can't support a 5 drop).

In terms or simple card evaluation in a vacuum, you are correct, Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest is not a great three drop in terms of power level for modern. However, in this deck, he has been great in play. He has won countless games on his own and is the second best creature (Geist) in midrange battles. Most of the time he will swing for 10+ damage on his own.

He lacks evasion, but typically by the time he is played the other opponent has utilized their removal spells on the first couple of threats I have played in the game and/or I have protection for him. He only has to live for one turn to end the game in most cases. Due to his lack of evasion I don't want to see him until later in the game and therefore he is only a one of in the deck, but in play and testing he has been an all star.

With all of that said, I am always open to making the deck better. What other options do you feel are better for the top end of the deck? I never I assume I have all the answers and I have been helped numerous times by members of this site to make my decks betters (I'm pretty sure scorpix has helped me in the past). I am open to cutting any card if a better option exists and is better in testing.

I LOVE Monastery Mentor and I have tried Monastery Mentor in testing. Monastery Mentor is a great card, but is simply seems too slow for the top end of this deck. We typically win with reach and he takes several turns to take over the game. I have built a more controlling version of this style of deck with him, Young Pyromancer, Haze of Rage, Boros Charm, etc. The controlling version is a lot of fun to play, but is not yet as competitive as the more aggressive tempo version listed above. I will list it on TappedOut shortly.

As another aside, I have added the maybe board to include cards that have been played in this deck before during the building process to give an idea of where the deck started and how it has evolved. Thank you for the help and the +1 votes!

Thanks jasz! Your deck looks really awesome. I love any jeskai deck, especially jeskai decks with Jeskai Ascendancy

Thank you Memnoch as well. I have to play a Hallowed Fountain to fetch a U/W land off of my fetch lands currently, but if I add any UU spells to the deck I will definitely be switching the Glacial Fortress out for Mystic Gate. Thank you for the help and the +1. It is always appreciated.

GofyTomcat1- I love me some Lightning Angel. Great call. I will definitely be trying that in place of Shu Yun. Thank you for the help.

Have you considered a one of Ajani Vengeant? I feel like he would be a more versatile inclusion than Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest.

July 5, 2015 8:54 p.m.

PlattBonnay- I have never had much luck with Ajani Vengeant in the past, but I haven't tested him in this build. He looks like he would fit right into this deck nicely. I will test with him and Lightning Angel in place of Shu in my next play test session. Thank you for the help and the +1!

@CurdBrosBrewingCo No worries. I'm still learning, but your deck builds are very advanced. Just trying to understand the card synergies so I could pilot a deck like this is educational.

Have you tried using Flying Crane Technique as a sick finisher?

July 6, 2015 1:46 a.m.

pumpkinwavy says... #15

Have you considered Seeker of the Way? Seems good here. Also Mantis Rider is better than Lightning Angel, and that one Telling Time doesn't seem to fit the theme, and is also worse than Anticipate.

Captgouda24 says... #16

Seeker of the Way might actually be a surprisingly good finisher, as each life link triggers separately, so if you cast three non-creature spells, you gain 15 life, four spells 24 life, five spells 35 life, etc.

Awesome deck!

I'm just simply commenting because in your description of Land Base and Summary, you misspelt Slayers' Stronghold haha :)

Instead of [Lightning Angel] what about [Mantis Rider]?

July 6, 2015 11:55 p.m.

GofyTomcat1 says... #19

dies to bolt and decay. Angel doesn't.

pumpkinwavy says... #20

Captgouda24 lifelink is a static ability, not triggered, so multiple instances are redundant. I learned that the hard way with multiple Soulfire Grand Master.

GofyTomcat1 not dying to decay is not a valid reason to pay an extra mana.

July 7, 2015 2:47 p.m.

GofyTomcat1 says... #21

Mantis Rider also eats bolts, Helixes, etc. I know everything dies to removal, but dying to less removal seems important in this format.

July 7, 2015 3:31 p.m.

I think both Lightning Angel and Mantis Rider are both playable cards in this deck. It really just depends on the meta your facing. I like that Angel can't die to bolt or decay, but she does cost 4 which is high for our mana curve. On the flip side Mantis Rider lands a turn earlier, but dies to everything. I don't think one is necessarily better than the other, it really just depends on the opponents deck. I will try both of them and see which I prefer in play. Thanks to GofyTomcat1, Raze999, pumpkinwavy, Captgouda24, and bradwi93 for the recommendations. I will be testing all of them. I think Seeker of the Way might be a great sideboard option for aggro decks so I will be trying him in both the main and sideboard.

Thanks Duckling for looking out for me. I changed the spelling. No one will ever mistake me for a writer :).

Thanks to everyone who has helped with the deck and given recommendations. The TappedOut community has so many great minds and is a great resource for brewers and players alike. Thanks also for the +1 upvotes. I really appreciate it.

Has anyone else tested with Abbot of Keral Keep yet? If so, what did you think? I have found him to be extremely valuable. He nets me an additional card about 75% of the time and puts a decent prowess threat on the board. Prowess adds that additional question during combat that keeps the opponent guessing when you have cards in hand.

Also the new mulligan rule really helps our deck. Delver decks are benefited greatly by a turn 1 scy as they can have additional information about their Delver of Secrets  Flip flipping. In addition, low curve decks that run less than 20 mana also are benefited because we can keep more 1 land hands because we get to dig two cards deep to find our second land. I really hope the new rule sticks.

Raze999 Flying Crane Technique is much to expensive for a build like this nor does it really fit the intended play style. It is a pretty sick finisher though. :)

I feel like you would do better by Grixis right now, CurdBrosBrewingCo.
