Is Jori En, Ruin Diver safe? Is she alright? Yes, she's just fine in a sleeve in one of my boxes. My fans, if I have a following at all, will rememember that this used to be a Jori En deck, the unspoken queen of the Izzet color pairing. Unfortunately, through no fault of her own, that deck had fallen into disuse over the years, and I decided it was time for a change. Already having a Talrand, Sky Summoner in the 99 made the switch to mono-blue spellslinger/tokens tempting. Looking through my collection and seeing I owned a few expensive pieces and could finish the deck for under $30 made the switch for me. So, here we are, down one color but up one deck. I think you should be pleased with the results.
You can probably get a feel for this deck by looking at one section of this page: the Instants subsection. It's a low to the ground, creature-bouncing, spell-countering, tempo-controlling, card-drawing, token-creating machine. It's Talrand. You know what he's about. Counter, bounce, draw, win. Did you just Disdainful Stroke your best friend's wincon? Why not Opt to draw a second card? You might draw into Pongify and get into some real monkey business. I'd call this a pretty standard Talrand build with a few choice additions. Abjure is a counterspell I rarely see, and that's a shame. Sure, it's useless on an empty board, but Talrand generates plenty of sac fodder and 1CMC unconditional counterspells aren't exactly common. Abjure is good, tell all your friends. Retraced Image is another bit of spice, hailing from Torment. Most of the time, it'll function as a ramp spell, slapping an extra island or mana rock into play for you. At 1CMC like Abjure, it's a hard effect to pass up, even with a hoop to jump through. I'll also shout out Diplomatic Immunity, Naiad of Hidden Coves, Hullbreaker Horror, Mystic Speculation and Foil for being either cards I don't see enough or a massive bomb deserving of its CMC.
You got this. Cast that Vapor Snag. Make a token. Wash Out the Zombie player. Make a token. Aetherspouts the guy with the Craterhoof Behemoth. Make a token. Negate that Cyclonic Rift. Make a token. You know what you're doing.
