how about Tragic Slip instead of Domri Rade ?

I have really thought about Tragic Slip and Domri Rade would be the first thing to go since I've noticed that his +1 isn't as awesome when I have Blood Scrivener already churning through cards.

I'd take out gravecrawler. You have 11 zombies total, that's not really reliable recursion and you don't want blood scrivener on the board during the early game anyway. Keep domri in, he can draw you threats with his +1, put things in your yard and kill opposing threats with his -2 and his ultimate is pretty much GG in here. A great card in this deck is slaugherhorn. That card is way underappreciated; spend only G to boost one of your threats by 3/2 and get 3 power in the yard? Yes please. Bloodrush cards are perfect for varolz. Tragic slip is a fine sb card.

Also, I find that this deck needs more than 20 lands, but my version has 2 4 drops so that might make a difference

Say 22 lands...I agree. Maybe 2 Blood Scrivener ..maybe Searing Spear ? My version have Flinthoof Boar and Lightning Mauler although I used Firefist Striker in the actual tourney. I got first place but the opponents decks are not tier 1 in level but it kinda worked for me...I don't know. But I like Varolz, the Scar-Striped and I think its the next standard to beat in the future.

While Gravecrawler doesn't have many zombies to pop up from the graveyard from that isn't really why it fits so well. Being able to discard it with Lotleth Troll and play it anyway without needing to scavenge it with Varolz, the Scar-Striped is the real attraction. Even if neither card is available it is still a 2/1 1-drop creature. I've found that 20 mana is plenty considering that I have mostly 1 or 2 drops in the deck.

I do like Lightning Mauler and I would probably throw it in for Spike Jester if I was going to put it in. I just like the jester a little more.

I see the interaction, but in your best case scenario there you're relying on something that has no guarantee being alive in order to get the maximum value out of it which just won't happen every time and you'll be left with a 2/1 that can't block. Consider dryad militant; a 2/1 for G that hoses decks with flashback spells/snapcaster and can block and usually trade vs agro. Just seems like a safer bet to me.

Spike jester is the way to go. Mauler would be the closest comparison but the extra counter it adds from scavenge makes the difference. If you had BTE in here then mauler would be a better choice.

20 lands is fine for an agro deck, but it becomes a problem when you need to scavenge and play new threats/removal during the same turn or scavenge cards like ghor-clan. I've tried 20-24 lands in my builds and settled on 23 but 22 might be good here.

I completely forgot about Dryad Militant , that does sound like a much better idea. I'm hoping that 20 lands is enough, if I feel like I'm having issues I will probably bump it up to 22. I was playing 22 but tweeked the deck a little and am hoping that 20 will play ok, I'll find out tomorrow (where I will probably be cursing myself for mana screwing myself).

20 lands huh. i kinda cringed when i saw that number honestly.

also a suggestion, boneyard wurm? love the card because in the grave he still counts creatures for his total pow/tuff

May 27, 2013 2:07 a.m.

GdSvThQn says... #11

20 mana really isn't that low for an aggro deck, and Boneyard Wurm isn't necessarily that helpful seeing the idea is to get creatures out of the graveyard.

I run a similar deck and I've found that there's a lot of synergy with Varolz, the Scar-Striped , Vexing Devil and Slumbering Dragon . Slumbering Dragon will usually cause your opponent to slow down on their attacks, which is awesome for Jund since you have time to establish yourself on the board. If it doesn't slow them down, then you know they have a kill card of some sort handy to take care of it. This is great if you've got another more valuable creature you want to put on the board but don't want to get murdered/exiled. The best though is when you get Varolz, the Scar-Striped out and then scavenge Vexing Devil and another cheap creature to swing in with Slumbering Dragon when they were least expecting it. If they don't have fliers/reach or kill cards, it can mean game over pretty quickly.

You know what, I was thinking about Slumbering Dragon as I was making this and just completely forgot about it. Thank you for bringing it back to my attention, sounds like a good thing to replace the Gravecrawler s I've been iffy about.

Hey guys...tried this in the meta standard here in the Philippines. Got run over by Thragtusk and Restoration Angel with Angel of Serenity . I was traumatized. hahahahahahah!!

May 27, 2013 4:41 a.m.

I'd dump the Slumbering Dragon for another bloodrush creature - that way you can bloodrush in the early game and scavenge it later. Possibly Slaughterhorn or Pyrewild Shaman .

Is 20 land sufficient?

Otherwise, I like the deck, well done

May 27, 2013 6:11 p.m.

Also, maybe main deck Pillar of Flame to deal with Voice of Resurgence instead of Bonfire of the Damned

Nice deck - I also have worked on using vexing devil for scavenge based on a mid-range deck by pauloleson. (My deck ended up being closer to yours, but I didn't post it on TappedIn.)

You could try Gyre Sage - the only one that won't evolve it is Experiment One . It's a bit questionable, because your mana costs have a lot of red/black requirements, but it would help offset your low land count and potentially fuel Bonfire of the Damned .

I would also consider Gaze of Granite in the sideboard - tokens are going to be a big factor in the current meta IMO, and tokens don't have a casting cost. You do have some increased ability to recover more quickly from a board wipe with Varolz, the Scar-Striped and Golgari Charm

Thanks for the Gaze of Granite tip, will definitely be going in the sideboard for those damned token decks. Gyre Sage is real tempting but doesn't quite fit.

Having four Varolz, the Scar-Striped in my collection I built a deck around it and it's almost identical to yours. Nice to know some of my ideas are not totally hopeless:) +1

Ya, it's a very strong card and just plays so well with Jund, especially aggro imo.

Interesting. Had some similar ideas for my Raptor3k's Reese's. Thinking about getting Lotleth Troll back into it too..

Grisly Salvage can also work nicely with this type of deck - cherry pick a creature or fix land and scavenge from the graveyard.

Not quite an aggro card, but normally you don't have to play it on turn two unless you are holding nothing else. Once Varolz is in play, it can be very nice (or if you are trying to find Varolz I guess too).

I run 4x Varolz, the Scar-Striped as well.

Don't laugh when I say this....have you considered Fling ? This card could work in your deck as a very potent delivery mechanism for damage. Build up a troll, swing, and then send it over the top for even more damage at instant speed. The instant speed of Fling also lets you punish folks for trying to get rid of your pumped creatures. Fling in response and deal big damage despite their removal. It's an unconventional choice, but in this context I believe it has value.

gamefiend says... #24

gah...I actually forgot that Flesh / Blood is just straight up better than Fling . The Flesh could be useful, but Blood is Fling w/o the sacrifice. Use that instead of Fling, and it's definitely a 4x card.

Might I suggest Slaughter Games for ur sb...since Rest in Peace would really hurt this deck games would eliminate that...just a thought
