Does Lili count as "Budget" (probably not, but seeing that this is already 500 bucks...)? Cause if you can afford her, she must go in this.
March 8, 2015 7:57 p.m.
Jamesfurrow says... #9
FAMOUSWATERMELON lol lili matches bob in price and I won't buy him cause of that. And this is a budget compared to a lot of teir 1 modern decks out of their. So when you put in perpective the price modern decks can reach (1-3 grand some of them tri color ones) this is a fairly cheap deck to make

Ok so I figured I tell my pals here how each match up went in the pax tournament! Shout out to JakeKita JundGrixisNayaBantEsper JakeHarlow and scrotality for all the help they put into my deck and taking a look at it!!
Soul sisters: 2-0
This deck was a budget on a budget so it wasn't hard to beat at all. He was clearly new to the format and I even choose to not sideboard to give him a chance and well when you put $80 bucks in a deck for modern you better have some damn good synergy
American control #1: 1-2
I lost the first round by him simply having a decent amount of control of the board with geist not going away anytime soon and resto popping in to save him. Game 2 I had nice wraths and took over. Round three he simply was too fast with all the burn he drew into
American control #2: 2-1
Same way as the first one just he didn't get burn and made some critical block mistakes costing him both geist and resto due to me having Dismember at the ready
Storm: 2-1
Omg this match up was so much fun!! Game one he was a little slow to start and I got huntmaster out and he simply made him cringe. My hand disruption was going beautiful. Round 2 we were neck and neck and I had him to 1 card in hand and I was at 3 life with a Thoughtseize in hand...I used it and removed a goblin electromancer from his hand and he was legit freaking out when I had my Scavenging Ooze gaining me back life. He then burned me and game 3 was basically a repeat of game 1 just much more disruption and tasigur making him cringe the whole time with huntmaster
March 9, 2015 7:30 p.m.
@Jamesfurrow- Do you think there was a way for you to beat Jeskai control (the rounds you lost) or was it just a lost cause from the beginning?
March 9, 2015 7:34 p.m.
Jamesfurrow says... #12
JakeKita I lost simply because he drew into too much burn and geist I couldn't wrath in time. I was going to win if he didn't top deck a Lightning Helix because I had ooze out ready to get me enough life and seriously hurt him

Awesome job, James. I've always respected you as a brewer and this impressive performance only confirms my opinion. You're also a hell of a player. Keep up the great work, I can't wait to see what you come up with next!
Side note: you mentioned the Soul Sisters matchup was "budget." So it wasn't the uber-competitive type of Soul Sisters with Ranger of Eos and Serra Ascendant? I also take it he didn't bring Auriok Champion from the sideboard?
March 9, 2015 10:57 p.m.
Jamesfurrow says... #14
JakeHarlow That means a lot to hear from you man!
Also on the budget yes they didn't even have all the soul sister staples. They had 1/3 of the deck essentially. And didn't bring a sideboard so I was kinda ashamed to have to be the guy to start the tournament kicking a deck completly out of its element. But again he entered a deck that barely had 80 dollars worth of stuff in it.

Ah, I see. That makes sense. I was wondering what happened b/c I play Modern Soul Sisters and it's usually OK against Jund, lol. It's not an easy fight, but it can hold its own. Still, a great match record for you. Sounded like Jeskai control was close. Next time you could do even better!! Keep at it.
March 9, 2015 11:18 p.m.
I just want to say how i think that Tasigur, the Golden Fang is the black Tarmogoyf . He's so incredibly efficient and even better, generates card advantage. I hope people don't realize how good he is yet because i'm saving to get my playlet :)Also, I really like this "Budget" jund! Imo it's always been my favorite 3 color combination but I don't happen to have 2 grand sitting around :p
Only a couple questions for you: Why no Golgari Charm ? is this simply a meta call? it's always been great for me against control and Twin decks. the same can be said about Thrun, the Last Troll . I know you have them both in your maybe board, I just wanted to know why
Why run Volcanic Fallout instead of more Anger of the Gods sb? I find It's exile clause soooo important plus it catches a little bit more with that one extra damage.
Also, why are you running an extra Stormbreath Dragon in your sb? This is out of ignorance since usually I like to keep all my copies of the same card in the same board maybe it's just an OCD thing haha
Overall. Great deck. Keep up the good work! +1

JakeHarlow yea it was a win but wasn't a win to be super proud of.
Satytap oh yea tasigur is great to use. And to awnser your questions Golgari Charm while good I feel does not help nearly as much as Rakdos Charm because rakdos messes up graveyard, affinity, and twin/ swarm strategies (looking at you tokens!)
The Volcanic Fallout may not hit as many creatures but since it can kill twin, Geist of Saint Traft, affinity, Naya zoo, tokens and it's not able to be countered which makes it a pain for control decks where most creatures toughness is 2 or 1 while it deals 2 to both players
storm breath is simply amazing but 3 copies game 1 is too much and only really will shine in match ups vs abzan and w/x decks to really get damage in.
March 10, 2015 6:36 a.m.
So I also have a grindy (abzan) deck and instead of goyfs and bobs I went for 4 Scavenging Ooze and some combination of Phyrexian Arena and Harmonize. I firmly believe that scooze is better than goyf in any sort of grindy matchup because over time ooze get's bigger and actually almost always has a good matchup against goyf assuming you have like 2 or 3 green lands. Harmonize and Phyrexian Arena are both just worse than dark confidant because they don't impact the board but they both really shine when the game goes long. Also I feel like Stormbreath Dragon should be Thundermaw Hellkite because it hits for harder, and more importantly hits basically through anything so can act like a 5 mana burn spell.
otherwise I love the list, I might add some planeswalkers to mine as well :) Good luck!

Jamesfurrow says... #19
bmbinder while I use to run thundermaw I went stormbreath because of abzan and American decks so heavily relying on Path to Exile and other white bombs spells stormbreath simply is more resilient and will get more damage through longer. Ooze I have as a 2 of because it's more for life gain, and synergy with tasigur. I don't agree with arena or harmonize because I have chandra and tasigur already providing card draw. Though I'm glad you like the deck! If you want I'll take a look at yours and see if I can help
March 13, 2015 1:06 p.m.
Hey James. How's it going?
I really like this deck. Terminate and Dismember are great choices against Abzan.
Scavenging Ooze and Courser of Kruphix are great against aggro.
I would like to see Feed the Clan in the sideboard to help you against burn.
March 13, 2015 1:13 p.m.
Jamesfurrow says... #21
Ohhh I didn't think bout feed!! ChiefBell do you think that be a better choice over my 3rd Stormbreath Dragon? And would I only want the single copy? And I'm glad you like the deck a lot!! I'm trying to get this noticed by the community cause I believe a deck can make it with out goyf or bob's if built well enough
March 13, 2015 2:42 p.m.
Jamesfurrow says... #23
Yea I completely agree ChiefBell though do you think I should keep Pithing Needle? I have more than enough awnsers for the walkers, and creatures that would make my day more difficult. I'm just kinda feeling needle is taking up 2 slots for cards that be more relevant for my sideboard. And what would you put in for them if you agree they should be moved?
Also took this to my local Fnm and went 3-1 there. I made an update posting the results and will go into more detail on a particular match up if asked

Thragtusk could help if you need lifegain, and against Soul Sisters, Atarka's Command helps stop lifegain and can provide a bump/strike.
Anyway, this list is looking very promising! Keep up the astounding job James! I'm super excited to hear from tournaments in the future!
March 14, 2015 11:17 a.m.
Jamesfurrow says... #25
JundGrixisNayaBantEsper I'll definitly consider Thragtusk for my sideboard. He's a good creature for sure and definitly 2v1's the opponents nicely and that command I've seen a lot and I myself love it! Instant speed land drop, anti life gain, bolt, and across the board buff all wrapped into 2 mana is diverse and will definitly see modern play with its cmc
Jamesfurrow says... #1
flipdipple I can see what you say bout huntmaster completely but I run him because in this format he's not as agressive or flips a ton its true, but he 2v1's the opponent regardless. That 2v1 is very useful. I had opponents completely forget his 2/2 wolf and they simply lost due to a miscalculation on damage.
