Introduction
Hi everyone! Recently Golgari Grave-Troll got unbanned in modern and now I'm trying to figure out how to make it good again. (as of course, Dread Return is still banned.) This is what I've come up with so far, although it is still in the works.
Deck Explanation
Abrupt Decay is one of the best removal spells in our colors. It's a given that this is going to be in the mainboard of the deck as it is just that good.
Life from the Loam was put in after I had taken out Alesha, Who Smiles at Death from this deck as I found that she was a bit too slow and easy to remove for what I wanted her to do. However, this card allows me to consistently get land drops as well as having some dredge early on when I need it.
Bloodghast is one of the cards that we can use to win. The landfall trigger makes this card good even if I end up dredging it into the graveyard (Most of the time this is preferable even.)
Darkblast is a card that's good in the early game especially to get rid of smaller creatures as well as being able to fuel your graveyard with dredge and being reusable
Faithless Looting is the main draw spell that we have as well as having the effect of getting crucial cards into the graveyard such as Golgari Grave-Troll
Golgari Grave-Troll is what sparked the idea for this deck. It's one of the best dredgers in the entire game of Magic and if you can figure out how to reanimate it, it becomes a huge threat for your opponent to deal with. (Note: it counts itself when you reanimate it.)
Golgari Thug is one of my more recent additions. It gives me an avenue to return Alesha to the battlefield if she gets removed or dredged away. Doing this gives a lot more versatility to the deck as well as you can continue to pull out more things with Alesha or target other things.
Gravecrawler is another card that in the deck that is good even if it gets dredged away or discarded. A good combo is discarding this card to Lotleth Troll and casting it from your graveyard.
Grisly Salvage allows us to grab what we need while fueling our graveyard.
Lightning Axe serves as removal for a lot of big threats. It can easily remove things like Siege Rhino, Tarmogoyf, Tasigur, the Golden Fang and much more.
Lotleth Troll is one of the main discard outlets in the deck. You can discard your big dredgers and in the progress make your troll and graveyard bigger.
Stinkweed Imp is the second best dredger in the game. On top of this it can be seen as a useful removal spell against fliers as it has deathtouch. When it does die as well, you can put it back in your hand with dredge.
Vengevine could be seen as a combo in this deck too. If you mill away your 4 Vengvines and bring them back from casting 2 creatures, that's an instant 16 damage threat on the board which can be extremely hard to deal with.
Sideboard Explanation
Scavenging Ooze, Huntmaster of the Fells and Thrun, the Last Troll serve as a transformation board against graveyard hate. It allows you to change the deck into a more midrange style deck that isn't so dependent on your graveyard being full anymore.
Golgari Charm is your go to tech against several different things. It helps greatly against more aggro type decks like Burn or White Weenies and allows you to blow up some enchantments like in the case of Bogles.
Ancient Grudge is what you would side in against something very artifact heavy like Tron or Affinity.
Lightning Axe is good against the Abzan midrange matchup or against a mirror match.
Thoughtseize and Surgical Extraction are the best against any form of combo deck. There's nothing more catastrophic than a turn 1 Thoughtseize into a Surgical Extraction getting rid of every copy of their main combo pieces.
