You're gonna want more consistency. Right now your mainboard looks like you're running Birthing Pod . Here's the creatures that you want:

Centaur Healer and Vampire Nighthawk are the best three drops to combat the all-in aggro decks of standard.

Disciple of Bolas can be cut. Other than that add more Garruk Relentless  Flip .

Thragtusk is better than Obzedat, Ghost Council which is better than Sigarda, Host of Herons . i suggest 4 thragtusk and 2 ghost dad.

Either add Avacyn's Pilgrim to get to your big fatties earlier, and maybe Arbor Elf , or have a way to stay alive by upping Abrupt Decay to 3 or 4.

The deck seems a bit too slow to combat midrange (reanimator and otherwise) and control decks, if you feel Rakdos's Return to be a great card against those I'd suggest having 3 copies post board instead of 2 (another option to think about is Collective Blessing to make all your creatures superior to other midrange decks).

For Trostani's sake I'd suggest adjusting your dual lands around to reduce the lands that can't tap for her. Lotleth Troll is also a good card for this deck, it can slow aggro, regenerate through a board wipe and if you add the mana dorks it can turn those into counters in the late game.

I thought about Collective Blessing to go with the Lingering Souls and other creatures for late game and to break a stalemate.

@Cartwheelnurd: I already have 4 x Thragtusk , but I don't own a second Obzedat, Ghost Council . If I DO get one, what would you suggest to cut for it?

As far as the removal, Abrupt Decay and Orzhov Charm remove threats early. The lifegain of my creatures allow me to use Orzhov Charm on later threats even.

@Demarge: I like RR, but having 3 means I will run the risk of having 2 in my hand with no red to cast them which would be bad. I learned my mistake from running 4 colors previously, and want to run Junk splashing red.

I think I will add Collective Blessing over Armada Wurm . Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm really questioning the inclusion of Onix. Nidoking in the main would be much better.

@Pumkingsword: I'm sorry what? (I would tag you in this reply but I'm unsure how to?)

@harrydemon117 The april fools joke for tappedout was replacing mtg card previews with that of pokemon cards.

April 2, 2013 9:56 p.m.

Rhox Faithmender . He can be more reliably cast than Trostani because his cost isn't nearly as color-restrictive. Trostani can be hard to cast, especially in a 3-color deck.

Just imagine activating Kessig Wolf Run targeting him. Swing for 2x + 2 life. Seems good.

harrydemon117 says... #8

@Landgraf I thought about that, and actually the scavenge of Deadbridge Goliath allows for me to do that with him too. (swing for 6 and gain 12? YES PLEASE!)

How do you tag a person on this site? I see others doing this but I have yet to figure it out

April 3, 2013 9:06 a.m.

Same way you tag a card. Just put brackets around their name.

I thought I tried that landgrafb.... let's try it again!

id say drop the faithmenders and make the Nighthawks a 4 set.

April 5, 2013 11:35 p.m.

harrydemon117 says... #12

@ ApocryphalSaint: What is your reasoning on this?

Vampire Nighthawk has 3 toughness which dies to Searing Spear . It is also 1BB which is harder to guarantee by turn 3 than a turn 4 3W for the Rhox Faithmender .

April 8, 2013 8:46 a.m.

Sainted says... #13

half of your land base has black almsot so getting 2B i dont think is as unlikely as you think it is and its not like you can play mroe than one a turn anyways. Where has the faithmender has a neato ability sure having More nighthawks has more benefits than you realize. NEVER underestimate the power of Deathtouch. and it has lifelink/flyer. Nighthawk is very commonly considered the most powerful black three drop in modern and were LUCKY to have it in standard right now. after more thought id say keep the faithmender but hink about dropping 2 other cards or even one to increase your Nighthawk count. you could even maybe get away with dropping one land. IDk your deck bro and its pretty damn solid.

Also i strongly reccomend not doing one drops of cards unless its a fatty like Angel of Serenity it throws off synergy.

One drops as in the 1 of Obzedat, Ghost Council ?

Khanye says... #16

Putrefy instead of Orzhov Charm , yes it costs 1 more...but it doesn't cost you life...the 1 Oblivion Ring is probably not efficient enough. get rid of the Disciple of Bolas and Rakdos's Return add 2 more Oblivion Ring . replace the Elvish Visionary with Blood Artist and the Rhox Faithmender with Cartel Aristocrat .

that will stabilize your deck more and provide more umph. Thragtusk without a way to flicker it is good, but not great. Vampire Nighthawk is a good card, but i would run Restoration Angel in its place to convert the Thragtusk to swagtusk.

harrydemon117 says... #17

Thanks khanye but I built this version because I don't have any Restoration Angel s unfortunately (otherwise they'd be in over Deadbridge Goliath .

Why the Cartel Aristocrat ? I'd rather not have to sac my perms with this deck, and the Elvish Visionary gives me some cycling power and an early board presence (not a big one yes, but it still gets me card advantage early or late which is good).

I see the combo you're trying to go with Blood Artist triggers with the CA, but that would require me to have both on board. One removal messes up that combo and no reliable way to come back from it. This deck was built to "outclass" my opponent's creatures, and generate card advantage so my overwhelming power wins out in the end. I have not gotten any DM cards yet, but when I do I will probably put in some Putrefy s. Thanks for the tip!

Cloudshift is a budget pseudo Restoration Angel

Putrefy ? I'd bump up the Nighthawk to 4x he's just to amazing. I'd also swap that last swamp for another shock if you could. I'll playtest it a couple times to give you more ideas

This is the deck I'm going to run at a TCGPlayer Silver event this weekend. My sideboard plans this far are:

vs Jund Midrange:

+1 Sigarda (Good vs sac's and can't target)+1 Tragic Slip (For mana dorks and falkenrath)+1 Witchbane Orb (No bonfire or rakdos's return)+1 Vraska (Walker and creature removal)

-2 Lingering Souls (if running Olivia)-2 abrupt decay (Not enough 3 CMC threats to warrant)

note - I thought about removing Sorin/Vampire Nighthawk as Olivia will just take them....thoughts?

vs Esper Control (non superfriend version)

+2 Golgari Charm (good vs verdict/detention sphere)+2 Lingering Souls (More tokens and flashback if milled)+1 Witchbane Orb (nullifies Jace MA, Drownyard)+2 Sin Collector (Good for hand removal)+1 Sigarda (can't target / evasion)

-1 Garruk Relentless (no aggro)-2 Vampire Nighthawk (swap 3 drop for sin collector)-3 Orzhov Charm (no creatures to remove)-1 Disciple of Bolas (Hard time keeping creatures out as is)-1 Thragtusk (Make room for Sigarda)

vs aggro (most types are the same)

+1 Garruk Relentless+1 Tragic Slip

-1 Garruk, Primal Hunter (swap for "removal" Garruk)-1 Angel of Serenity (bring down average CMC of deck)

vs Junk Rites:

+2 Purify the Grave (instant speed GY removal with flashback)+1 Deathrite Shaman (Graveyard removal with benefits)+1 Tragic Slip (kill mana dorks or block profitably)

-2 lingering Souls (not good with Golgari Charm)-2 abrupt decay (most things to be removed are > 3CMC)

vs Aristocrats:

+1 Tragic Slip (most things are x/1 and good vs Falkenrath)+2 Golgari Charm (O ring and x/1's post board)+1 Garruk Relentless (Removal and quicker than PH)

-2 Lingering Souls (not good with Golgari Charm)-1 Garruk, Primal Hunter (Speed up deck and too many Garruks)-1 orzhov charm (another Tragic Slip is better here)

Comments are appreciated!

(and please +1 if you like)

personally and only personally

i would not walk in with out at least one Pithing Needle it answers AEtherling and planeswalkers, likely 2 in the side board first target would be the side board Garruk Relentless  Flip

i would run 3 Thragtusk and run a fourth Restoration Angel - main reason you can pull a Thragtusk from your graveyard with Angel of Serenity and still create two board state changes.

one Ground Seal and Tormod's Crypt over Purify the Grave

i would also look at Gaze of Granite for mass token removal,Blood Artist over the Elvish Visionary keep in mind this decks card draw is limited to 3 cards, - with your little bit of ramp a Staff of Nin would be temping

i would also want to run a pair of Unflinching Courage but this is more a guilty pleasure -, "don't laugh it works"

harrydemon117 says... #22

I don't laugh...i've seen Selesnya lifegain decks and they're no joke (although those were only in the sideboard)

Why the Ground Seal ? It doesn't synergize with Angel of Serenity very well.

Tormod's Crypt is good as a 1 sided Rest in Peace usually, but my opponent will see it and play around it. Purify the Grave does the same thing at instant speed AND doesn't really cost me a card to use it (not to mention it has the HUGE ability of Time Walk ing an opponent

I agree on Pithing Needle . AEtherling is one of the few cards I'm worried about from DGM. I will have to acquire some of these before this weekend. What would you suggest I take out for them in the SB?

I don't have enough ETB for a 4th Restoration Angel or else I would agree. the 4th Thragtusk is better don't you think?

May 14, 2013 4:21 p.m.

Khanye says... #23

Purify the Grave hits 1 card...Tormod's Crypt hits the entire yard...and I don't see how you play around the crypt midgame...they have pumped their yard for 3 turns, feeling really good about themselves. You land the crypt, wait for them to gauk, and then sac it bogging their yard. "pass turn"

why would a good player give another player a chance to "play around" the crypt....

May 14, 2013 4:26 p.m.

Khanye says... #24

also, can i have your lilys?

May 14, 2013 4:28 p.m.

harrydemon117 says... #25

If you cast Tormod's Crypt and have it on the battlefield they know they can't drop something to the yard. If you don't have one on field, they can safely Grisly Salvage EOT (mine) and dump stuff to the yard to reanimate on the following turn.

Luring them into a false sense of security allows me to "time walk" them and keep MY pressure up.

Same concept as Rest in Peace really...if it's there they will try not to dump things to the yard and play the "midrange" game of casting things instead seeing as how I'm not aggro

If I follow your line of thinking and exile their yard on the turn i cast it (i'm assuming turn 3 to 4 IF I draw it) then yes it has it's desired effect for one turn. Purify the Grave allows me to do it twice and basically get 2 free turns. Once it's in the graveyard they know I have it and will slow down which is where I want them to be
