I came first at games day going 4-1, my match ups and sideboard plans are below.
Round 1, Grixis Control 2-0 win
Game 1
Pretty easy win I didn't see a single card from him except 1 Murder not entirely sure what was going on as he had a fist full of cards but was stuck at 4 mana so clearly wasn't flooded or starved.
Sideboard
Out
-3 Mulch
-3 Fiend Hunter
In
+2 Loxodon Smiter
+2 Sin Collector
+2 Acidic Slime
I bought the Loxodon Smiters in as anything against U decks I want to have a reliable threat I can just slam down when I need to and not worry too much about Counterspells. Acidic Slime is just amazing here if I get a good start I can start to pop lands at turn 3 and as this matchup is Grixis control they don't have access to ramp such as dorks or Farseek. Sin Collector are here to feed me information and take away potentially blow out spells like Turn / Burn.
Game 2
He played a lot more spells this time with a turn 3 Lilliana of the Veil making me sac my mana dork which I wasn't too unhappy about as I knew he was bound to tick lily up and I had a Loxodon Smiter in hand. My threats were matched with his removal spells but 1 for 1ing a reanimator deck is not where Grixis wants to be. He slammed an AEtherling but tapped his mana wrong and didnt leave up U to blink him. I promptly reanimated a Angel of Serenity snapped it off him and won off the back of that.
Round 2, USA Control 2-0 win
Game 1
This game was breeze and not down to my opponent not doing stuff I just got the god hand and managed to turn 3 Acidic Slime on the play and continued to blink and reanimate additional slimes till my opponent conceded the game to me.
Sideboard
Out
-3 Mulch
-3 Fiend Hunter
-1 Sever the Bloodline
In
+2 Abrupt Decay
+2 Sin Collector
+2 Acidic Slime
+1 Obzedat, Ghost Council
Mainly the same strategy as the Grixis match up but as this control deck was running Boros Reckoner I wanted another way around that and Obzedat, Ghost Council I feel gives me that work around (if I don't draw into angels or slimes) also the Abrupt Decay are great to use in response to the Harvest Pyres I saw in game 1.
Game 2
This game was so much more intense. I had an average being on the draw as did my opponent. I haven't played this match up that much but when I powered out a Thragtusk early on off the back of a Cavern of Souls he followed with a Clone and in his next few turns promptly started to blink it (this is where I wish I kept my Sever the Bloodline in). I sat in the think tank for a while and decided the only card that could save me here was a Angel of Serenity off the top and hope for no Counterspell, clearly the magic gods were listening to me and I got exactly what I wanted though the game wasn't locked up just yet. Next turn I reanimated a Sin Collector to get abit of information of what I was facing down he revealed a 5 card hand of 4 Azorius Charm and 1 Supreme Verdict I took the verdict as I didn't need him killing my angel getting back his Clone and Restoration Angel also I could play around the charms by not swinging with the Angel. With that information I decided to wait and in a few turns I managed to slam a Craterhoof Behemoth for the win (even through the charms).
Round 3, Esper Control 2-0 win
Game 1
Again this match up was pretty easy as I got the god hand and managed to turn 3 Acidic Slime on the play and continued to blink and reanimate additional slimes and all he did in the first few turns was just play shock lands tapped (slime food).
Sideboard
Out
-3 Mulch
-3 Fiend Hunter
-1 Sever the Bloodline
In
+2 Loxodon Smiter
+2 Sin Collector
+2 Acidic Slime
+1 Obzedat, Ghost Council
Lovely Esper package to bring in.
Game 2
Opponents first few turns weren't much a turn 3 Augur of Bolas which missed any targets as I powered out 2 Loxodon Smiter and started to beat face. My opponent was very unlucky and got stuck on 3 lands even though he played 3 Think Twice, guess that Augur of Bolas put lands to the bottom. I felt dirty winning like this as I was geared up for a good game but a win is a win I suppose.
Round 4 Rakdos Aggro 2-0
Game 1
Was pretty crazy we both knew what decks we were playing before the games so I got a starting hand of 6 lands and Thragtusk I kept it (looking back I probably shouldn't of as many things could of gone wrong). They played Rakdos Cackler into Ash Zealot into Toil / Trouble. My draws were just multiple Thragtusks plus Restoration Angels I promptly locked the game up by flooding the ground and swinging in with my angels over a few turns.
Sideboard
-3 Mulch
-1 Sin Collector
-2 Acidic Slime
In
+2 Abrupt Decay
+4 Loxodon Smiter
Game 2
I have to say the Rakdos player was very unlucky in their opener they got their turn 1 Rakdos Cackler didn't do anything for another 3 turns as they got stuck on 2 lands and when they got the third land they played Boros Reckoner by that time I was ready to reanimate Angel of Serenity and play out the Thragtusk in my hand. I didn't see any sideboard cards this game but it happens, I think I was lucky my opponent couldn't punish me as they normally would due to being stuck on 2 lands.
Round 5 Woo Bred Rite Aid combo 2-1 loss
Game 1
This was no where near a close game for me. I managed to reanimate Thragtusk into Angel of Serenity but he showed me his combo with his Angel of Serenitys and Tyrant of Discord.
Sideboard
Out
-3 Mulch
-3 Fiend Hunter
-1 Sever the Bloodline
In
+4 Loxodon Smiter
+2 Acidic Slime
+1 Ray of Reverlation
Not sure if my sideboard here is correct as it's not really the mirror as the games can go long and he will just combo off so I decided to go more midrange and attempt to either pop lands or beat face with Loxodon Smiter.
Game 2
I managed to win this game off the back of popping all his lands with a turn 3 Acidic Slime into blinks so he scooped up and we quickly went to game 3.
Not changes to sideboard.
Game 3
Again much like game 1 I was in good shape with multiple Thragtusks on the field but he just got the combo again and I lost. Turns out his reanimation targets (Tyrant of Discord, Sphinx of Uthuun, Griselbrand and Omniscience) are so much better than ours.
I ended up taking 1st place as all my 2-0 wins had gone undefeated after losing to me so my tie breakers were insane.
All in all I liked the decks performance and the late game power is just near unbeatable, that is if you don't reanimate a Omniscience into a combo. I really liked the addition of Loxodon Smiter in the sideboard as pretty much is all the match ups that card was a power house. Future changes to the deck I may replace the Craterhoof Behemoth with something but I just feel that the card gives the deck an inevitable way to win, plus reanimating that on turn 3 is hilarious.
