Maybeboard

Intro:

This is the latest version of the very first magic deck I ever built! What started as literally a $20 budget deck has slowly turned into my pimped-out pet deck. Selenia is a great commander to make people go “Huh?” This is high-powered?” when they first see her lol. The trick is you can hold priority and activate her ability as many times as you’d like to reduce your life total. This deck is a heap of jank combos + expensive cards. Couldn’t ask for more from an EDH deck.

1. How does your deck win? The main gameplan is knocking yourself down to 0-1 life and swapping life totals with an opponent.

2. When does it tend to pop off? Often turns 5-7 if you have at least one tutor in your opening hand.

3. How long do people have to stop it? 0-2 turns. Many combos only kill one player at a time though.

4. What's it strong against? Any non-blue creature-based deck.

5. What's it weak against? Interactive control decks or counterspells in general.

7. Two-card infinite combos? Ad Nauseum and any Angel’s Grace effect is an insta-win.

8. Tutors? Every easily-cast tutor under 3-mana with minimal restrictions.

9. What's the deck's vibe? Overpowered jank with some unique win-cons.

Ad Nauseam + Angel's Grace/Soul Echo/Phyrexian Unlife will allow you to draw your whole deck. Teferi's Protection also works if you cast it the end step before your turn. It's pretty easy to win at this point in two different ways:

Main Plan Show

Backup Plan #1 Show

The classic Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond/Vizkopa Guildmage. Just deal some damage or gain some life and you'll go infinite. I like using any of the Ping category cards, attack with Selenia, Dark Angel in the air, or use any of the Lifegain cards.

Bolas's Citadel + Sensei's Divining Top/Necropotence lets you draw/remove any card off the top of your deck for 1 life so you can churn through your deck quickly and get rid of all the lands off the top. All the Lifegain cards pretty much guarantee you can churn through your whole deck.

You can also use any Lifeloss card to go from <0-2 life. If you're at 1 or 2 life use Repay in Kind/Axis of Mortality and then finish them off with a Ping card. If you can go below zero with a Combo #1 piece it's an instant-win.

You can also use Sanguine Bond/Vizkopa Guildmage after gaining a bunch of life to kill any player with a lower life total than you.

A sneaky trick is to Swords to Plowshares your own Wall of Blood to gain a bunch of life.

  • Any Recursion: Sometimes . . . you gotta just move on with your life. If my combo gets shut down, I normally just go for another one.

  • Solemnity + Glacial Chasm: I used to have this combo in. Both cards serve other functions for lifeloss or protection with Phyrexian Unlife. I just rarely found myself using them, and they don't do enough on their own.

  • Tainted Remedy + Beacon of Immortality: This is pretty fun. But has a big all-in mana cost for just killing one player. Tainted Remedy also is terrible on its own.

  • Reverse the Sands: This card doesn't play like it initially reads. You actually have to move life totals around as they are, no giving every player 1 life and yourself the rest. Axis of Mortality does this far better.

  • Triskaidekaphobia/Tree of Perdition: It's a cute combo, but both are pretty dead cards otherwise.

  • Soul Conduit/Magus of the Mirror: Just too expensive and derpy to surprise anyone with more than once.

  • Stunning Reversal: It's difficult to hold up 4 mana when you spend every turn setting up for the big combo play.

  • Lich's Mastery/Lich/Nefarious Lich: Thematically they all fit the deck, but the cards needed to support them are honestly an entirely different strategy.

  • Leechridden Swamp: As you can see in the comments, I just found that the number of times I needed to ping everyone for one vs. the number of times I needed to have an untapped Swamp didn't compare.

My first build of this deck was Selenia, $20 Killing Machine made by the excellent trashpile. It's a little outdated, but the bones are still great for an ultra-budget build.

Also, apparently Mitch from Commander's Quarters did a $50 list a couple years ago: Selenia, Dark Angel | The Commander's Quarters
