Maybeboard


Kaalia of the Vast says build around me more than almost any other commander. The problem is she also says, "Kill me!" just as loudly. The trick, therefore, is to either kill everyone else fast enough, or stop them from killing you. My build leans toward the second of those options, though it doesn't forgo the first.

Kaalia Targets: My bread and butter, these are the creatures that I can cheat into play with Kaalia.

Removal Suite: I'm not the only one with cards. This is what lets me operate despite having opponents.

Card Advantage: This deck likes to use a lot of cards. Here's how I get more.

Ramp: If you want a turn 3 Kaalia, you gotta have some ramp.

Protection: Kaalia is pretty fragile, and needs some protection. This stuff doubles at protection for other threats when Kaalia isn't there or isn't needed.

Haste: When playing a creature deck, you want ways to make sure you can recover from having your board wiped. To come back with a bang, try playing and attacking with Kaalia (or another creature) in the same turn. Here's how:

Double Trouble: Extra combats, double damage, double strike, I've got it all.

Combos and Synergies: While not the focus of the deck, I do have a few cool interactions.

The Chopping Block: These cards aren't pulling their weight, or are just a bit underwhelming. When I get new stuff, this is what is most likely to go:

  • Rakdos, Lord of Riots - he was good when I had It That Betrays and some other things I couldn't or didn't want to cheat in with Kaalia, but now that those are gone, he's mostly a 6/6 flying trample, which while not bad, could be better.
  • Rakdos Carnarium, Boros Garrison, Orzhov Basilica - the Ravnica Karoo lands, while often nice, are just too slow. They might get replaced with basics, pain lands, or something else.

Suggestions (of both what to add and what to cut) are very appreciated, but please don't suggest something from the maybe board, that's stuff I want but don't have. Also, while not limited to a strict budget, I'm not getting duals or anything like that (at least for a while) for this deck.

So I decided that I wanted to make this deck better and put in in the top end of my EDH decks so I can use it in a more cut throat meta.

Suggestions are more than welcome, but please don't suggest anything on the maybe board, that's stuff I am already planning on getting. Also, keep in mind I don't have infinite money. A Moat would be pretty cool, but I'm not buying one of those.
