Kaalia is a deck my brother and I have been wanting to do for some time now, but have just been discouraged by price. I've recently turned to proxies, and want to make this deck as a gift for him. Angels, Demons, and Dragons are his favorite mythical creatures and he loves them just as much in Magic, as he's recently made an Ur-Dragon deck he loves.

Card Choices

  • Creatures Creatures were chosen for their impact on the player once being swung. If you've noticed, most creatures either play a big role in controlling the board when they enter Linvala, Keeper of Secrets and Magus of the Moat help protect you directly, and control the board in your favor. Other cards, like Hellkite Tyrant and Lord of the Void were chosen specifically for Kaalia's ability, as they enter the battlefield for free and attack, a good way to sneak in their abilities to trigger.

  • Acceleration Mana rocks for this deck are important in speed and permanence. The Signets are important for not only generating extra mana, but converting colorless mana cards like Mana Crypt and Sol Ring produce into useful colored mana, which you can use to cast Kaalia early. Other cards, such as Tutors are used for getting your top cards such as Master of Cruelties, Avacyn, Angel of Hope and Balefire Dragon out on the battlefield sooner then they would normally be played.

  • Removal Cards such as Cataclysm and Armageddon are great for resetting the game and taking out your opponents. Combine some of those with indestructible and you could get a 100% chance of winning (in some cases.) Other cards, like Anguished Unmaking are cards you should use to take out your opponents biggest threats, or commanders even.

  • Control/The Long Game A lot of good control pieces are here, to lock up the board state and make sure your opponents can't do anything without you having a useful response to it. Necropotence and Phyrexian Arena are great late game card draw (even early game) Reanimate, Animate Dead, Volrath's Stronghold are good for replenishing threats in the long game. Wheels can help screw over your opponents, and ruin their game.

General Guidance

  • Head Start The goal of this deck is to have Kaalia on the battlefield ASAP. The ideal hand has mana sources to get her out on the battlefield turn 1-2. Rocks, Lands, and the like will help you get her out soon without too much stutter. You want to make sure you have a good balance between mana and utility. Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots are always good to have, as you can stick 'em on Kaalia and forget about her. Not to mention haste.

  • Sword and Shield Consider the best creatures to swing and block with. If the opponent can't block, try swinging with a Master of Cruelties. If they don't have flying, but can block, consider Balefire Dragon, Hellkite Tyrant, or Rakdos the Defiler. Worried about your board state? Avacyn, Angel of Hope and Linvala, Keeper of Silence are great for protection. Not to mention Brisela, which is a great beater and stranglehold on the board.

So, there you have it. If you guys could give me any suggestions, and advice I would greatly appreciate it. This Primer was inspired off of AlexRuzhyo's Kaalia primer. I am still new to writing Primers, and would love any help you guys have to give. If you enjoyed this decklist, please consider giving it a +1 and sharing it if you enjoyed, no hard feelings otherwise though. Thanks, and game on!
