I love Sultai decks, so when Marionette Master was spoiled for Kaladesh, I was excited to brew up a deck that could take advantage of its ability. I decided to improve its consistency by combining it with the card advantage granted by clues.
The first changes I would make to this deck would be to add fast-lands and other dual lands to fix my mana. (I'm trying to save some money though, so what I've listed is the deck as I will actually make it)
The deck focuses on building up a bulky board-state, with
Tireless Tracker
and Erdwal Illuminator generating clues for later sacrifice, until I can access Tamiyo's Journal. Tamiyo's Journal will then be used to pull out one of the deck's win conditions. Marionette Master is the deck's primary win condition, though Ormendahl, Profane Prince
is in the deck to take advantage of the tokens generated by
Ulvenwald Mysteries
.
Deathcap Cultivator
provides mana ramp.
Contraband Kingpin improves the consistency of the deck by letting me scry for every clue entering the battlefield. It also lets me build up a bulkier board-state, and provides some life-gain with lifelink.
Confront the Unknown
is a flexible combat trick when necessary, but its main use is to boost the power of Marionette Master to enable faster kills.
Cryptolith Rite is included as a 2-of to ramp with the tokens from
Ulvenwald Mysteries
, though it's not critical to the deck's function. Testing will determine if I need more copies, though Tamiyo's Journal and Diabolic Tutor make obtaining Cryptolith Rite easier than it might otherwise be.
Blossoming Defense is a cheap combat trick which provides a relevant +2/+2 boost to Marionette Master. Most importantly, however, it can be used to defend Marionette Master or
Tireless Tracker
for a turn with Hexproof. I may want to bump this to 3 copies, but I don't know what to remove.
Negate and Revolutionary Rebuff are in the deck to protect my Marionette Master in the end-game, or Tireless tracker during the early game, as both are crucial for the deck's proper functioning. I may include more or less of one compared to the other, depending on how testing proceeds.
Lastly, Diabolic Tutor is in the deck to enable tutoring a turn earlier than with Tamiyo's Journal, and to allow tutoring to occur if my deck has not accumulated the requisite number of clues.
