canterlotguardian: Indeed, which is why Volt Charge, Contagion Clasp, and Contagion Engine are in the deck.

What about Markov Warlord as a second Glarewielder. It's ended a lot of games for me in my Ruhan of the Fomori deck.

Burning Wrath of the Lithomancer

Little shameless plug. Mine is all built just waiting on kalemne herself.

I would like to suggest a Prowler's Helm another good way for getting through without being blocked

Phaetion says... #6

xxNyarlathotep: I had the Helm in here once, but I had to cut it to make a bit of room. I feel like I have enough evasion as it is.

On another note, keep your eyes peeled for a C15 update; it will be HUGE.

This is a sweet deck, Akroma, Angel of Fury or/ and Akroma, Angel of Wrath would be a good beater with trample. I like your your methods of crushing skulls.oh try to get your hands on a Command Beacon. Helps the commander out.

SimicBerserker0: Thanks for the compliment. The Akromas sit at a high curve, so I can't add them without sorting out the mana curve.

Command Beacon, though, is going into my next version (or at least I'm considering it). Speaking of which...

I played the stock list, and Giant tribal was more interesting than I thought: It has very little support barring Lorwyn block, and the deck already gives you a head start. My newer version of Kalemne is in this direction (Don't worry; I haven't forgotten about Sunforger; it's in there with just as many targets as this deck). Stay tuned later today; it will be up.

might i recommend Isochron Scepter? it seems like it could help with some of you copy spells, or to ensure that you dont lose the game in a 1v1 match

The design is not bad, voltron oriented design would be great too. Cards such as Battlegrace Angel, Sublime Archangel, and Cathedral of War can be included to boost her. Creatures with Evoke are some good shortcut for gaining Experience Counter. Good equipment such as Scytheclaw or Quietus Spike, would lower an opponent's life to 1/4 as long as she hits. Kusari-Gama would makes opponent think twice before block and Banshee's Blade makes her grow too while Hero's Blade is a cheap but huge boost. Other honorable mention would be Spellbinder, Umezawa's Jitte, and 5 of those enemy-color swords, to make full use of her Double Strike. Compares with the other 4 commanders, perhaps she requires the least Experience Counter to gain significant impact to the board, don't focus too much of gaining experience counter, that's just bonus. Two Experience Counters with a little boost from equipment/enchantment would makes her a 2-turn kill. The nature of the deck design should provide consistent protection to her and make sure she hits players. CMC 5 creatures are not that crucial. Whereas, Indestructibility, Unblockable, protection or evasion are important, such as Eight-and-a-Half-Tails. Card such as Urabrask the Hidden, though provide experience counter and haste, it is actually in the reversed casting order, thus not a good suggestion. Blind Obedience or Kismet would actually do a better job. Resolute Archangel could be important too. To go a little bit crazy, Strionic Resonator can be used to earn additional Experience Counter or other trigger abilities such as Exalted and from other equipment.

ponyboy276: The scepter is only good in spell-heavy builds, which this deck isn't.

Piew: Holy laundry list, Batman! I'm not really a fan of a lot of the cards, but Hero's Blade is definitely a good card to be running.

Saw your thread over at How Much Equipment is Enough? and thought I'd weigh in.

With all the usual disclaimers (e.g., I don't know your play group nor how your deck actually plays on a real table), here are a few thoughts:

Sunforger is in, regardless. O-Naginata is a card I'm going to run. Maybe Loxodon Warhammer should be cut for it. Hero's Blade I might add, but idk...

By both Akromas, I meant Akroma, Angel of Wrath and Akroma, Angel of Fury.

I think the 3 are much better though, since they technically put them into play. Of the unblockable stuff, I'd sooner run Whispersilk Cloak back in.

I'll consider the Canyons, though.

Phaetion,
Too funny on the Akroma's ... I always forget about Akroma, Angel of Fury!

Also, I just saw the note on your thread, that you're aiming for Voltron as a sub-theme rather than the main effort. Oops and sorry for all the overboard recommendations then!

A barely-Voltron option I've been toying with since Kalemnae was first spoiled is a big focus on Instants. I imagine her as the complete opposite of the typical Boros beater ... she's studied under Iroas for years and is now a master tactician; kind of the Sun Tzu of Theros. With that in mind, someday I'm going to build her with a Sunforger focus and a bunch of combat tricks (maybe like some of these) ...

Finally, forgot to mention earlier: +1, especially for sticking it to the haters in your writeup!

It's ok, and I could add a few stuff, but I'm already trying to add Oblation and Magus of the Wheel, and the deck's too tight. I can't really fit anything in.

Oh, and thanks! :D People seriously underestimate Kalemne. I terrified everyone in a game because of her.

So, here's my piece:

I recommend running Steelshaper's Gift. That would give you an extra copy of any one particular equipment you run, so you don't have to overload your deck with the cards. The number of equipment you have right now seems about right.

I would drop Kusari-Gama for Champion's Helm, Loxodon Warhammer, Trailblazer's Boots or Sword of Vengeance- if you want your creature unblockable, Trailblazer's Boots is just better at it in Commander. If you want to board wipe your opponent, just run a board wipe; don't give your opponents the choice because they will always choose what hurts them least. Also, Kusari-Gama doesn't work well with double strike without trample- the second hit, if the blocking creature doesn't survive the first strike damage, doesn't get dealt without trample or something. So if Kalemne is blocked by a 1/1, he'd only deal 3 damage (unless you pay into the overpriced Firebreathing ability). Notwithstanding, Kusari-Gama also gets blanked by the evasion abilities of the swords (since Kalemne should not be blocked if you have the right Swords, or if you add Trailblazer's Boots), only offering bad Firebreathing which I don't believe is worth a card slot.

Anyway, that's all I've got. Looks like a pretty solid WR deck, overall. I think you'd probably like some more mana acceleration, but I am unsure if you need it in your meta game or not.

PookandPie: First of all, thank you for the suggestions.

I used to have Warhammer, but I literally just took it out for O-Naginata, where both the cmc and equip costs were cheaper (Also, since Kalemne is 3+ power, it avoids the drawback).

Sword of Vengeance was too expensive, and I got enough protection to not want to run the helm. In Kusari-Gama's place, I see Whispersilk Cloak. That said, costing 4 to cast and equip Trailblazer's Boots is pretty tempting indeed.

As for Steelshaper's Gift, I'm not likely to run it, since I want to avoid having too much consistency (because I'm going for Sunforger at least 90% of the time).

Your deck looks fun. It would be really cool to face against your deck. :)

Ravolt: Thanks. :) It is a fun deck to play. A lot of my thoughts on the deck will be in the next update, which has no fixes (It's hit that perfect spot).

Oh cool. I'd give advice if I could, but I have no experience with Boros edh. (I have yet to build a complete edh deck from scratch).

Certainly a +1 from me.

Great deck and impressive detailed descriptions of edits and alternatives. Makes me happy to see some Kalemne love after everyone seems to be dismissing her for no decent reason.

Curious about your latest change with the switch in of Dragon Mage. Any chance I could hear your thoughts behind the change?

December 20, 2015 3:41 p.m.

Phaetion says... #22

Ravolt: I didn't really either until now, so it's cool.

CptCrumpet: First off all, thanks! :D Everyone is terrified of this deck at my LGS. I am constantly a threat, and I may need to find ways to hold up in the event of Archenemy shenanigans.

Also, about Dragon Mage, it's a long story: Boros sucks when it comes to card draw, and it was a constant problem. The stuff I had earlier helped, but it wasn't enough. Outpost Siege worked, but it is slow. Then I added Knollspine Dragon, replacing Duplicant (See update for reasoning). This fix tore me inside because I was trying to decide between it and Dragon Mage. In the end, I decided to add both, removing Balefire Liege in the process.

The fix will be in the next update, but I'll post it now (since the update is getting a little crowded): Balefire Liege, though I rarely draw it, was underwhelming. It really was only good with Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas out. We have Bastion Protector, who does the same thing for 2 colored mana less, and grants indestructible. Then, we have the Lightning Helix effects. White was useless because lifegain rarely mattered. If the red ability said creature or player, I may not have removed it. Also, because we have mostly mono-colored creatures, we'd only get one trigger, and let's face it: Lightning Helix doesn't do much in EDH, and Balefire Liege isn't going to grant too much value. I'd rather have one more card draw spell in its place.

Thanks for explaining the change Phaetion.

I'm building a Kalemne deck myself and have been scouring the internet for peoples opinions and ideas. Your deck is definitely one of the better, more unique lists I've seen and the fact that you give detailed descriptions behind each change really brings to light the strengths and weaknesses of this commander.

I will be checking back here every now and then to read your updates as I have found them very useful.

Anytime. I'll go ahead and make an emergency update (The one on Christmas Day will still happen). Thank you for the compliment(s). :)

I haven't seen anything good on Anya, Merciless Angel, who is another Boros general I want to build. Why do people hate Boros so much? So many good cards are underrated because of this invisible stigma.
