Maybeboard

When you play Kambal, you are the helpful hand that remembers your buddies of the fact that living means paying taxes all the time. In this case, taxes consist of your buddies precious life points, and you want them all.

Partner commander?

I sometimes switch the commander between Kambal, Consul of Allocation and Vona, Butcher of Magan, based on personal or play group preferences. The other card ends up in the 99.

General Goal

The general goal is to amass life gain triggers, multiply their strength and turn them against your opponents.

Gaining some life points

Most of the life comes from your permanent’s triggered abilities. Kambal, Consul of Allocation reacts to your opponent’s non-creature spells, remembering them that they can’t cast their stuff for free. Authority of the Consuls gets you some life points out of opponent’s creatures. Always give your opponents a friendly reminder that your turn has just begun, they’ll appreciate it.

Remember: Soul-linking your opponents Stuffy Doll is bonkers.

Being pro-active

A turn 1 dropped Serra Ascendant is a nice way to start the game with some life points ahead. When they get ahead and exile it (preferably after some swings), I think a Divinity of Pride is a sensible replacement. Spirit Loop isn’t Lifelink, so it works with creatures having lifelink, doubling your net gain.

Gaining more life points

Now that you have a steady life income (getting paid in life point is great!), we need to get some more and Rox Faithmender+Boon Reflection will get you some more.

Gaining all the life points

When you gain a constant stream of life points, you use those life gain triggers and start chaining triggered abilities into nice combos. That doesn’t necessarily mean Exquisite Blood+Sanguine Bond|infinite combos, but also other things that react on life gain, like Wall of Limbs, Serene Steward or using Defiant Bloodlord to turn your life gain into life loss for your opponents.

Win the game

Vizkopa Guildmage’s second ability helps taking out opponents and is a nice mana sink, especially when used in combination with Debt to the Deathless. (Gatherer rulings quote):

Each time Vizkopa Guildmage’s second ability resolves, a delayed triggered ability is created. Whenever you gain life that turn, each of those abilities will trigger. For example, if you activate the second ability twice, let those abilities resolve, then gain 2 life, each opponent will lose a total of 4 life.

Cheap common cards?

I built the deck just before Kaladesh was released using cards from the BFZ and KTK sets I had laying around. Later, I refined it and replaced some, but some are still left, like Molting Snakeskin. They can be used as replacement slots for further refinements.
