The Deck

The initial plan (inspired by my wife's play style) was to create a simple/fun deck that has a resilient commander, creates a large board presence, ramps into fun bombs, and doesn't have too many confusing decisions to make for a newer player, eg. "what the hell do I find with my demonic tutor" or "should I be countering that spell" As the decks evolved I believe I've still kept the core values in mind while also making a very strong deck

  • Simple: Yes relatively (Ramp and Smash face)
  • Fun: Definitely, the the 90%+ win rate adds to that
  • Resilient commander: YES Indestructible and even harder to remove when not a creature
  • Large board presence: with only 10 non permanents there's always a lot on the field
  • Ramps into fun bombs: Elesh Norn, Avacyn, Craterhoof... Good enough for me
  • Limited confusing decisions: This is where it gets trickier... as you get to know the deck you'll know what the optimal choices are to tutor for (and there are quite a few tutors). If I were to make this for a new player I would sub out a lot of these for more general draw, but as a more experienced player I like the flexibility of finding what I need

Card Breakdown

Thanks to Karametra's ability EVERY damn creature in this deck becomes ramp, however in order to consistently get Karametra out earlier than turn 5 I still have a lot more sources of ramp too

Creature Ramp: Note: Cheap mana dorks are particularly strong in this deck as they ramp fast early game and once Karametra is out they become 1-3cmc Rampant Growths, even if they get hit with a boardwipe straight away they have easily provided enough value

Land Ramp

Artifact Ramp

There's actually a pathetic amount of draw in this deck, but due to the large amount of ramp, recursion, and tutors it never seems to lack something to do

Strategy

These little guys find a range of different types of cards

This isn’t a combo deck, but there are still some interactions between cards that could be called combos by some

Academy Rector + Zendikar Resurgent

With 45 cretaures and a mana doubler Zendikar Resurent gets out of hand extremely quickly, Academy Rector helps to get this on the field a lot sooner than it should be

Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite + Kamahl, Fist of Krosa

Pay to destroy target land

Emeria Shepherd + Sakura-Tribe Elder

Sac Sakura to find a plains, Emeria returns Sakura to play... Repeat for every basic plains in the deck then find a forest

Craterhoof Behemoth

Late game with a few creatures on the field this is one of the easiest ways to close out a game

Strengths

  • Resilient commander Especially when she's not a creature as there's not a lot of exile enchantment effects floating around
  • Ramps very quickly Once Karametra is on the board most speels you cast will be ramping you
  • Large board presence: always has a blocker
  • Recovers quickly It's full of recursion and even recovers from MLD pretty well as long as Karametra is still on the board
  • Answers to everything: There's a large creature toolbox in here

Weaknesses

  • Humility with 43 creatures this hurts, that's why I still have some instants/sorceries to destroy enchantments
  • Stranglehold stopping us ramping with Karametra is a bit hit, and you can't even tutor for an answer
  • No Counterspells: can be hard to protect a game winning play or stop someone comboing
  • Limited instant speed interaction: This is predominantly a sorcery speed deck, although if need be it can be adapted to play more at instant speed
