Made another Top 8 at the next Modern 2K event! Here are my matchups and thoughts on my deck choices.
6 Rounds:
Bring to Light Scapeshift: 1-2 Loss
Jund: 2-0 Win
4 Color Gifts: 2-1 Win
Jeskai Nahiri: 2-1 Win
Merfolk: 2-0 Win
Bant Eldrazi: 2-0 Win but I drew on the scoresheet to let him get Top 16. In hindsight this was a mistake because I would have been 2nd seed going into Top 8 instead of 6th if I had taken the win.
Top 8:
Same Bring to Light Opponent: 1-2 Loss (Turn 3 Crumble game 3 with no Warping Wail in hand)
Still got $100 in store credit to put towards a Legacy deck.
Deck choices:
I'm really liking the split between Lightning Bolt and Kozilek's Return in the main deck since I started playing with it. Having all instant speed interaction and a mix of single target removal and boardwipes has been relevant in many matches.
Another change I made was trying to move away from playing World Breakers. My main issue with the card is that it is basically a turn 4 threat due to the restriction in its mana cost so it should have an impact on the game state that is similar in power level to Ugin or O-Stone. In many matchups, that level of impact is simply not there and he either eats a Path to Exile or different removal spell as my opponent continues to beat in my face. The only cards I would actually desire World Breaker against are Inkmoth Nexus and Cranial Plating. Other than that, the card is worse against Burn/Aggro than Wurmcoil Engine and worse than Sundering Titan against Midrange/Control once it hits the field. (The cast trigger is nice to get through countermagic and the 3 for 1 against Path to Exile is decent, but Sundering Titan straight up wins the game if it is allowed to resolve as you will get a 4-5 for 1 against any removal whatsoever and your opponent will be on 0-2 lands and stuck with whatever boardstate they currently have. For these reasons I decided to replace both of the World Breakers with another Wurmcoil Engine and a single Sundering Titan. In the games I played, Sundering Titan was simply amazing and nobody ever played around it in game 1 (as if they even could play around it). In fact, Round 1 Game 1 against Bring to Light Scapeshift, I played a Sundering Titan on turn 4 and destroyed all my opponent's lands after I baited them into Cryptic bouncing my Wurmcoil to my hand during combat. Had a good laugh after that one.
Really want to start making it past the first round of Top 8, so I'll make sure to be smarter about my drawing decisions in future tournaments.
