Man's Best Companion

Why Zirda: Pros/Cons

We do take a hard hit trying to meet Zirda's companion requirements but there are some payoffs that may offset the downsides. The main cards we lose are:

Having Zirda in a "command zone" though enables a variety of two card combos. Most of these involve having a mana dork and one other untap ability making the combo very efficient like the classic Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter

We are still able to run fairly effecient back up win conditions with Jace, Wielder of Mysteries

Since our win condition revolves around our mana dorks, our opponents will constantly have to be prepared to interact if we have mana dorks out. In addition, our comobos revolve around cards we would already be playing (slot effecient).

There are enough cards to substitute for the cards lost. Card advantage is our biggest weakness. However, this can be slightly offset using Kenrith's ability if needed. This deck optimizes itself around using Kenrith's abilities in the late game if the game state plateaus.

Infinite Mana Combos

With Zirda, the Dawnwaker in play the following combos provide infinite mana:

Infinite Colorless

Infinite Colored Mana

Additional Infinite Mana Combos

Infinite Mana Outlets

Budget & Card Substitutions

Enhancing

This deck is currently constructed with the cards that I have. Of course, if you have the dual lands substitute out as necessary as well as a Time Twister if you have one...

Card Alternatives/Maybe Board

Umbral Mantle

  • Works with/in place of our lines. In some way its better because it allows our creatures to untap without blue but it is a bit slower than both Crab Umbra and Thassa's Ire which is why I excluded it. Also, both Crab Umbra and Thassa's Ire are one drops meaning if we have 4 mana open with a mana dork set up, we can drop zirda and win on that turn if uninterrupted.

Staff of Domination

  • Similar description as mantle except its better in the fact it doesn't need to be equipped

Leyline of Abundance

  • This produces a similar line as Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy but will generate infinite green depending on the line you have set up. I've considered running both for redundancy, but I haven't found a slot for it.

Basalt Monolith

  • If you have been keeping up with zirda, you know the story. It can either replace Grim Monolith for budget reason or be an addition.

Magus of the Candelabra

  • If you're on a budget, this will work with zirda if you have three lands open. Its definitely a budget substitution as it is useless without Zirda but still works.

Freed from the Real

Necropotence

  • As mentioned before, card advantage is our biggest struggle. Luckily, Necro is a permanent with an activated ability. Because of this, this card is definitely at the top of the list for trying to integrate into the deck.

Ad Nauseam

  • Did I mention card advantage is our biggest struggle? Luckily our avg. cmc is fairly low which may be a reason alone to run ad naus.

Wheel of Fortune/Windfall

  • More draw

Thrasios just replaces dimensional infiltrator. It provides the same wincon while providing card advantage at times where we need to rebuild/develop our hand.

Wheel in to provide more hand rebuilding.

Freed from the real can provide a instant win with bloom or Faeburrow Elder.

Removed isochron and reversal as it was redundant. Freed from the real is another redundant inf. mana generator but at one card slot with our other creatures.
