New Edit 4-0 —March 21, 2016

Since this deck has undergone some serious changes over the past 2 weeks, I feel proud to report that I went 4-0 yet agian!

Since this deck doesnt have spirit guides to enable a turn 1 kiln fiend the deck is slowed down by a turn or 2, but a turn 4 consistent win is always fun.

Tonight I faced Grixis control, R/G Tron, Colorless Eldrazi and Traditional Boros Burn.

Match 1 went to game 3. He cleanly abused me in game 1. This diminished my hopes and made me question why i spent the money on the upgrades. Game 2 rolled around and I ran through him waay to easily. At the end of the game, my board state was a 4/5 swiftspear and a 14/6 kiln fiend after pumping. He didnt have an answer and took lethal on turn 4. Rinse and repeat and you can paint a pretty picture of game 3.

R/G tron is way to easy of a matchup for any kind of burn deck. If they do not turn 3 karn, they lose. This is known. Easy win in 2.

Colorless eldrazi fell in 3 to this deck. Bolting mimics is fucking fun. Forcing cheap chump blockers and slamming for massive face damage is also really fun. After losing game 1 to a 5/5 endless one that wouldnt leave, i changed my gameplay to apply much more pressure rather than burning face. Leaving mana open for boros charms, helixs, and destructive revelries lead to a game 2-3 win.

Boros Burn was sorta difficult. That deck is just better. Eidolon started to really fuck him up when i started to throw huge creatures at him. Game 1 win. Game 2 i boarded in dragon's claw, and landed it turn 2. He decided to board in 3 of them and hit 2. He collected the win in game 2. Game 3 was a ringer. He was fetching and shocking and fefching and shocking. He widdled himself down to 13 before i started dealing damage. I dont know if he was trying to race me, but he made a big mistake. By turn 4, he was staring a 2 nacatls a vexing devil and 2 untapped lands. He had 4 life, so he decidex to conceded.

Tonight was a great night all around, and i am starting to take a huge appreciation for this deck. I think i will update each time i attend a tourny. I doubt my luck will be eternal, but either way, this deck is strong and fast.

I wouldn't ever play Shard Volley if I could, you should probably take it out for another Lava Spike. I don't know if Vexing Devils are doing what you want them to due, due to them not triggering fiend, young pizzy or swiftspear. The burn they do could easily be matched by a few more Grim Lavamancer in the main. Obviously if your budget is high enough you should be playing Goblin Guide, but that's entirely your choice. Also, if you don't mind budget you could consider 1-2 Blood Moon in the side.

Good suggestion with the volley. Goblin guide is not inside of my budget right now, however 1 blood moon isnt too far out of reach. I own skred red and have 4 for that deck. The only problem with that would be the need to have a basic forest in main for atarka's command. Thats a little weird for me. Vexing devil was a suggestion from a buddy of mine from my lgs. If they let him die, they take four to the dome, if it stays, i can pump the fucker up reaaaalllly huge on turn 2. Not that bad, thats why it is only a 2 of. Thanks for the feedback though, double0whammy.

titans strength is good but everything gets chumped id add in a couple temur battlerage for sweet double trample strike makes vexing devil work harder and even if its the only spell you cast makes kiln fiend work.

Felixlives, adding in double strike has been a concern of mine for a while. I tried temur battle rage, and while it was successful, it was slower than my other pump spells, and only connected once per game, if i was lucky. I tgought to myself "there has to be something i am missing".. so i decided to splash white, make it naya burn, and add in Boros Charm. I have been playtesting for about an hour now, and have had similar success, but the win lines are much less linear. Burning the face is actually much more easy now. Take a look at the list and let me know what you think!

I like this, +1 from me

I have a u/r prowess deck that I'd like to splash white in for cards like Boros Charm and Monastery Mentor, this seems to work with the w/g pretty good though

Thanks man! Mentor is really good, but compared to young pyromancer for this build in particular, it is lesser. Pyromancer is red, so he is easier to cast, his mana cost is lower so he hits board quicker, and both abilities would generate the same amount of tokens. The only real thing mentor does better is have prowess, but depending on hitting a 3 drop, when with 3 mana, i could pump 3 times, or burn a hell of alot, is really shaky in my mind. Thanks for the feeback and the upvote though!

All great points

Ausar says... #8

you should add Wild Nacatl

Ausar, I was contemplating making this nacatyl burn. I am playtesting with nacatyl as a stand-in for young pyromancer. thanks.

Why no plains? WN cap at 2/2?

March 14, 2016 2:29 p.m.

Sergal says... #11

Heleg88, Sacred Foundry is in the landbase. Nacatl checks for the card type plains, not the card name plains. sacred foundry alone gives it the +2/+2 pump as early as turn 2.

You took my advice, eh?

Sergal says... #13

Definitely Ausar. Thanks man!

Heleg88 says... #14

Oh, nice! You're totally right, I missed that.

KaraZorEl says... #15

I would put Path to Exile in the main deck, mainly because you won't be able to narf Deceiver Exarch with a burn spell. That means an automatic first game loss.

Additionally, Boil is a great spell to cast in an attempt to catch a blue deck with its pants down.

March 15, 2016 9:13 a.m.

Sergal says... #16

KaraZorEl, splinter twin is banned in modern now, so exharch is irrelevant. The only need for a path in main would be against mono green stompy, and it is already a good matchup for me to begin with. The reason path is in the sb is for grishoalcannon decks that play Worldspine Wurm. Decks that play tasigur, seige rhino, kitchen finks, or as needed. In main deck, it would be a wasted slot that could be taken up by burn or pump.

Maybe this is just the standard player in me, but I feel like Become Immense + Temur Battle Rage would work really well in this deck.

March 16, 2016 4:21 p.m.

Sergal says... #18

wasianpower, become immense might work well, but temur battle rage gets outclassed by Boros Charm indefinitely.

March 16, 2016 6:06 p.m.

jamesfiek says... #19

You might want to take Simian Spirit Guide out of the description since it's not in the deck. Also, you might want to go up to 4 Lava Spike.

March 17, 2016 9:14 a.m.

SuperLicorice says... #20

Maybe take out the 1x Grim Lavamancer and put in more Lightning Helix, Boros Charm, Atarka's Command, or Mutagenic Growth.

March 17, 2016 7:38 p.m.

Ausar says... #21

You should take out Vexing Devil Ur deck wants instant/sorcery triggers and Vexing Devil is a 4 damage creature spell. You could add like Kird Ape, Path to Exile, Goblin Guide, Vines of Vastwood, and maybe Burning-Tree Emissary

Clockwurk says... #22

Great deck! +1 from me, but u should take out Bloodstained Mire for Windswept Heath or Arid Mesa

March 18, 2016 12:56 p.m.

Sergal says... #23

Clockwurk, why?

March 18, 2016 1:04 p.m.

Felixlives says... #24

Because there is no black in the deck? Maybe a wooded foothills

March 18, 2016 10:13 p.m.

Sergal says... #25

All of my lands are fetchable with bloodstained mire except for the basic forest.... there doesnt need to be black to use a black fetch. I didnt want to spend 65 dollars on arid mesa, when 20 dollars was more than sufficient.
