Introduction

Welcome and thank you for enlisting for service in the shool of Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca.

The Way of the Waves

(This section is still work in progress, so information might be incomplete)

While we are able to defeat our enemies on any terrain, we prefer to utilize the pure might of the earth and the swiftness of the seas to outgrow and swarm the battlefield with our brave warriors.
That means we make the best use of cards like Hardened Scales or Branching Evolution in conjunction with Kumena's third ability to power up our army of Merfolk while keeping strong tribal synergy throughout the game with famed veterans like Lord of Atlantis, fresh blood like Merfolk Mistbinder and even call upon the power of our goddess Svyelun of Sea and Sky.

This section covers all of our ramping mechanisms.

  • Rampant Growth, Kodama's Reach, etc.: Classic Ramp spells, not much to be added here.
  • Song of Freyalise: This card is amazing in our deck, since it not only ramps quite a bit on because of our creature focused strategy, but also grows a signifcant amount of +1/+1-Counters on , especially later in the game.
  • Path of Discovery: This one's a little special. Path of Discovery lets us utilize the keyword ability Explore which results either in ramping our mana or gives us additional counters (more on this in the next section). Overall a good fit in our deck.

As mentioned before, this list aims to generate lots of +1/+1-Counters throughout the game to overpower our opponents with an army of buffed up fish. In this list I explain some of the card choices that act as enablers to our plan.

  • Hardened Scales: One of the key pieces to our main strategy. This way we ramp the power of our creatures very fast at any stage of the game
  • The Ozolith: This artifact acts as an insurance to all our hard earned counters. If a fellow soldier gets killed, exiled our bounced all its counters move onto The Ozolith and next combat onto the creature of our desire. Pretty nice.
  • Vorel of the Hull Clade:

  • Triumph of the Hordes: This card needs no introduction. It's a pretty easy kill if this resolves. Either through many little creatures, or through a big fish. Paired with Islandwalk this card can take out multiple opponents at once.

  • Oversimplify: Another _"Superise, I win"_ card. Move all the counters you created on the token and swing for victory.
  • Mana Drain: Blue EDH staple. Not included for budget reasons but can replace any counterspell in the original list.
  • Cavern of Souls: Replace Unclaimed Territory if you have a lot of money.
  • Bident of Thassa: Works great when you have a lot of unblockable sneaky fishies, might require some changes to the creature base (see River Sneak or Mist-Cloaked Herald).
  • Growth Spiral: Another Ramp spell to use if you have trouble getting your stuff out.
  • Ranger Class: I'm really excited to try this one eventually. Consistent source of +1/+1-Counters or a way to deploy a shit ton of fish on the board. Pretty awesome.

Conclusion

Kumena certainly knows how to demonstrate the power of the Merfolk tribe in realm of EDH. I'm always excited to bring my lovley fishies to the table and while the deck certainly is not up on the cEDH level, it does make for pretty diverse and interesting matches.
And it definitely wins the flavor game by a mile!

Please feel free to post ideas and suggestions in the comments and let me know what you think of the list!
I'm fairly new to the Commander/EDH format, so please do point out things I may have overlooked while building the deck.

Thank you for reading and have fun riding the Merfolk wave!
