Kynaios sat on the couch, scrolling through his phone, simply existing in the quiet apartment. Across from him, Tiro stared at the wall, his legs curled beneath him as he pondered. They each occasionally glanced over at the other without a word. The air between them was thick, their silence louder than any conversation they'd ever had.

They had been roommates for over a year, two souls who seemed to fit perfectly together. Yet, lately, something was different — an unshakable tension neither of them could acknowledge. Kynaios would catch Tiro’s gaze lingering just a moment too long, or feel his presence like a weight in the room. He would pretend not to notice, but it was impossible to ignore.

Tiro shifted slightly and broke the silence. "Do you ever wonder what it’d be like if things were... different?"

Kynaios’ heart skipped. The question hung in the air, but neither of them dared to answer it fully.

"Different how?" Kynaios asked, his voice barely above a whisper. He was afraid his own feelings would spill out if he said too much.

Tiro looked at him, eyes searching, and for a second, it felt like there was nothing else in the world besides them. "Never mind," he muttered, looking away quickly, his face flushed.

Kynaios felt a pang in his chest, but he couldn’t bring himself to bridge the distance. He wanted to say something, anything, but fear held him back. Fear of ruining everything.

They had learned to live together, but had never learned how to be together. The gap between them remained — silent, heavy, and impossible to close.

Their only outlet was playing commander... as really good roommates. Group hug serving as the thinly veiled outlet for giving each other everything the other could ever want. Anyone probing further, pushing them towards their undeniable destiny, was met with the same, unsatisfying response: "Nah fam, that would be gay."
