i am excited for tonight. too bad all of my friends and the more experienced players are in memphis for the open. I feel if i win with my VW control tonight its like I'm cheating. So i think I'm gonna play my new milling all to pass turns. still not sure though i will see who all is in the room when we start. I really wanna take the tourney and win still though.

Hey there, Siq6Six, it's a pleasure to hear from you, meet you, and thanks for the careful insight.

I really appreciate the fact that you've been watching the deck for some time now and went as far as to order cards to fulfill the deck list and start playing it. You have no idea.

Funny enough, as you did, just last week I ordered by Kiora Kraken tokens, as I'd never opened them before (nor seen them, actually). I have been ultimating with her weekly, really, that I thought it time to have the actual tokens to throw out there. They're much more menacing than the 1-dice I used to throw out there, lol.

I've thought about the Polymorphist's Jest from time to time, and yes, thought it would be awesome as well. The problem I saw with that card, though, is that I run into enough U/W heroic (where they get bigger with counters, and even though they turn into a 1/1 frog, they keep their counters) and into enough mono red aggro (where they'll have some enchantments on their creatures, bumping up their toughness) where the combo would become either too fragile or too useless. But yes, it would be an AWESOME combo sweeper. I just figured, though, now that we have a Crux of Fate, there's no need to combo a sweeper, we just HAVE a sweeper. ;)

I haven't run into the mana screw problem that you detailed. With 25 lands and 4 Caryatids, with 3 Coursers to help the flow, I typically haven't been screwed. Sucks to hear you have been.

Awesome to hear you're sticking with this deck until rotation, much like I am. I'm genuinely happy to hear it! I encourage you to pop by more often and let me (us!) know how it's going and we can continue to bounce ideas off one another. As you said....forever in search of the sweet spot for this deck. I don't think I've found it yet, but I think it's well on its way, considering the current record of this deck for me is 22-10-3!!!!

ok ok Loco-Motive no need to bring records out lol.... Siq6Six Glad to see yet another follower of this VW control meta. i agree with loco on the Polymorphist's Jest it's kinda gotten a bad rep with me since my last screw up with it. i didn't realize it didn't change the name of the creatures and when i tried to combo it with Bile Blight and made a bad move that lost me the game. The card is good but you have to think about this you need more than one in the deck to be consistent so if you draw 2 of it and no dragon then its a lost move. plus the dragon comes out turn 5-6 maybe 4 if you just got an awesome draw but most of these aggro decks win turn 5 if you can't get them to slow down. just saying more important cards would need the 3 cmc slot than the jest. I do like the idea though always nice to keep eye's out for combo's.

Hey Loco-Motive are you playing tonight? didn't know if we would have results for this week.

loco i really think you should consider Frontier Siege even just as a 1 of. you could drop 1 crux, disdainful stroke, or sultai charm. any of those could be options. you can play siege turn 3 and turn 4 VW for 5 or even just play garruk, sweeper, or just use tasigur's ability for free every turn. I'm running it in mine as a 1 of and even though its not as good of a game ender as dictate but it does give you awesome ramp and isn't a dead card in hand when you don't have VW as we found that dictate was.

plus it could bring ugin to the main board if you chose you wanted him in there. just a thought let me know what you think.

I am just NOT sure I can jam that in here, syncronym. I can see uses for it, but man, even the three cards you brought up, I feel, are all pretty integral. Charm's out of the question...it's too valuable a removal for mono aggro as well as Whip decks. I feel a little more naked dropping down to only 2 Crux as it lessens the chance of it coming up when I need it to.

Disdainful Stroke COULD be a possibility as a drop. I don't feel as comfortable going to 2 counterspells in the main instead of 3....but I'll give it some thought on my train ride home before I head to my FNM tonight....see if anyone else here wants to comment on that switch-out.

Yeah sure if I what your meta is like and those may be bad drops for you I've just been seeing it do so well for me in the playtests and my meta has been mostly token and red deck wins type of decks so not very much charm or stroke use here I hate dropping sweepers but that's all I seen on your board at first glance and with mana ratios it just made more sense to drop something 5cmc or higher for the siege but in the end it comes down to playstyle I have enjoyed how mine has been working with the free mana every turn its a control players dream.

Fuck it, lol, I'll give it a try in place of a Crux, jam the Crux in the sideboard. This way, I can quit revoking the idea purely on speculation.

Loco-Motive good point about Polymorphist's Jest, I had not considered it didn't change the name of cards, therefore Bile Blight would be ineffective.

First of all i Want to say sorry my friend for Frontier Siege's lack of well being significant. it did really well in the play test so i thought it was worth it but when i used it last night it just didn't have the right umph i needed. so we both got the short end on that one lol.

Got my results at Charming villains

Also i am thinking of dropping 2 stroke and 1 negate for 3 Dissolve or Dissipate and sideboard the 2 remaining negate. my thing is i really like negate being a 2 mana counter that hits anything but creatures. i like having the extra 1 mana sometimes it comes down to 1 mana a lot of the time.

i will say though I've been very underwhelmed by garruk here lately. he just isn't cutting it for me right now. thinking of dropping him next week and see how it goes.

Oh and i have to say thank you though 1st for trying some of my suggestions whether they end up working for you or not or if you don't like it sometimes you try it anyhow and thats awesome. 2nd Palace Siege just a money card i didn't realize how much of a boss this card is I'm gonna swap 1 Feed the Clan from the sideboard to get this in. it might even make its way to the main board and replace garruk for this next week.

Ive been following this deck since almost day 1 because it was just so close to what i had already been using. i thought i had +1'd it a long time ago but apparently not so i gave it a +1 to bring it up to a nice score of 75.

Hey there, syncronym, lol, no worries. Like I said, "fuck it, I'll try it out." Only way we learn. But yeah, Frontier was just too underwhelming. All good, we live and learn.

Palace Siege - it's boss, ain't it? :)

I'm liking how it both keeps me in the game as well as potentially grinding down my opponent. Brought it in against my red aggro opponent last night and -I- was slowly burning -him- out. It was precious.

And thanks for the +1!

+1 to this build! Looking at this has my head going off about building something like this!

ZongMadness, thanks so much, and give it a try! Test out out, see if it's too your looking! The contents have been hidden in the past comments, but you'll see that we have a little mini-Wealth community here, constantly throwing input to make it better, and a few have made this deck and playing it at their FNM.

Appreciate the comment!!

syncronym says... #17

yeah ZongMadness this is my favorite deck I've ever built. will play this deck even after it rotates out. would only recommend this to ppl that are ok with slow methodical ways to win and are ok with weak board presence. Also that if they want to get a different play style than aggro that will teach them a lot in a short period of time with mechanics.

If you want to improve that burn matchup, and other aggro matchups in general, I'd try to get the Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver's to main board. I took a gameday a while ago with a BUG Walker control deck. Turn 2 Caryatid into turn 3 Ashiok will shut down A LOT of decks. If they don't get through a Caryatid to him, you win. It will force them to throw burn at him, but given the number of burn spells it would take to drop Ashiok, who gets two bigger every turn, they're just wasting it instead of hitting you. But if they don't, you either play their big creatures (Like that Butcher of the Horde or a Stormbreath Dragon, or just a good old Siege Rhino or Seeker of the Way against the other big standard decks), or get it to ultimate to shut down their yard and empty their hand. Nobody is recovering from that.

Loco-Motive says... #19

Hey there, Chad-Guy, thanks for chiming in. Yeah, I will always side in Ashiok for the burn match-up. Less experienced players, or just nervous, twitchy veterans, will start throwing their burn at him instead of keeping it concentrated on me. He's a great lure...

it's funny my wife has decided she doesn't like her b/w heroic deck or the w/b warrior deck. so i am in the process of building a jeskai control deck that functions thats very similar to this one just that there is no VW. Really sad it isn't the jeskai too lol.

I'm thinking about dropping Jace's Ingenuity for Jace, the Living Guildpact.... just wanted to here what your thoughts are on that. my main cause for this was bc it is cheaper than ingenuity and it fuels delve and messes up whip and control decks the most. Also bc i dropped an ashiok from the deck completely so I'm down on his slotted planeswalker slot anyway.

February 22, 2015 1:34 a.m.

Loco-Motive says... #22

Y'know, I played Jace in this build about a month ago. I never thought he was bad and got a few comments from opponents about my good use of him. If I'm right, I think back at that time I wasn't running Ingenuity, either. Actually got him to ultimate a few times. I can't remember exactly my reasons for taking him out, though. I thought his bounce ability was only OK and used only when absolutely needed, because you know the thing's coming right back out again, and it's not a +1. I'm not sure I can say anything bad about him. Give him a shot. We can probably both agree on this - he'd be better than Frontier, ;)

could you take a look at this other control deck i put together. i tried to keep it close to what we've been doing in our decks. just let me know if there is anything i might be missing or some things to think about. the name is Jeskai bubble dome

So FNM went "meh" last night. Round 1 I beat a Waste Not deck with ease. Dumped my hand or kept extra land when necessary for discards. Pulled Monastery Siege both games as well for massive value.

Round 2 - Lost to a g/b devotion. He pulled all the right counters when they mattered. I probably played a little too loose. Game two I had to rush and didn't side board

Round 3 - Beat a red /white pretty easily. Kept his bigger guys under guys while Silumgar handled the tokens. I had to explain to him how Dash worked. He'd been paying the cost + dash cost prior. As well as making sure he understood the difference of tapping a creature for an ability vs for convoke.

Round 4 - Lost to a super fast red BRB deck who had palace siege out and was hitting me with double-dashers + swiftspear, while ask I could draw was 3 mana removal Ashiok survived 1 turn. He played around blights and had a creature to fill in as soon as one was removed. Not sure how to board against this one. Prob make plenty of mistakes.

Round 5 - win. Opponent forgot to drop....Round 6 - we got a late start due to pairing issues and not knowing the round was proceeding. Was a g/r/w deck with Mastery of the Unseen, Purph, a bit of ramp. I forget if we went 2 or 3 games. He got the win with a nice top deck. I wiped the board w Crux then pass. He EOT manifests 2, dropping me to 12 life, with no way to remove his Purphorose. He draws Rally the Ancestors, pays 4, bringing back 5. If I remember correctly, one of them being a Brimaz. He had me dead with Purph EtB pain. We both agreed it was a great top deck. This was another match where I didn't side board. We started @ 30 min. Bringing in Ugin + more counters would have been beneficial. Purph was never active he just used the EtB effect.

I have not used palace siege yet, but Monastery sure has proved worthy. May try running 2 main board so I'm more likely to see it. Only saw it in Round 1 on Friday.

Oh, what do you think about Torrent Elemental? It's open to kill removal, but it can be delved by dig or Tasigur, then brought back.
