Hey mozz -

In Garruk's Wake isn't necessarily a win-more card for this deck. As this deck is controlling by nature, I don't have access to a whole lot of sweepers in these colors other than Perilous Vault, which doesn't jive with my wanting to keep my board state intact. The only other "sweepers" I have are AEtherspouts, which is situational on just attackers. When Garruk's Wake comes out, it's usually late-enough game where they have one or no cards in hand. That lands, clears them out, and it gives me a remarkable advantage over them. Why I only include one. It's also often gotten my ass out of a few fires as well when I fall behind.

As for Ashiok, I've been testing bringing him in against control opponents. He's been a test in this deck and, honestly, would possibly be the 3-of I may take out of the sideboard for a 3-of Hornet Nest. I just wanted to strengthen my sideboard against control opponents, milling out some of their answers and win-cons. He's been pretty good against creature-heavy decks as well...just testing. Not sure if he'll stay in here...

And thanks for the congrats. This deck has been SO much fun to play.

Check out my BANK OF SULTAI deck for some Ideas.

Mistcutter Hydra against other control or Against Savage Knuckleblade. Defend the Hearth is also great against Aggro or Temur Aggro. Also works great if your opponent has the edge over you or if you do not have enough mana for AEtherspouts

Dude glad you're enjoying the Wealth list and it's treating you well! This looks good to me +1! I play a little less control in my list and run another Garruk and also Liliana Vess for her tutor ability (but the discard is also pretty handy). I've been enjoying my list quite a bit, but might take a few cues from yours. Wake seems to be a very relevant play, at least in the side if nothing else. It's nice working with proper villains. is my list if you wouldn't mind dropping by and letting me know what you think.

Thanks for the recent +1s!

Comfordor, thanks for the input. As you can see, I keep 2 Mistcutter Hydras in the sideboard for such cases as control or the knuckleblade. Defend the Hearth is a little harder of a sell to me, only because it staves off an attack for a turn only without any upside (like lifegain or damage redirect). I would likely rather have a straight-up removal card in my hand than Hearth, when I know they'll just be attacking with the same number of creatures, or one more, by the next turn.

Cadmeus, thanks for the Villainous props. I see you're playing with it as well. Fun shtuff, eh? LOL. I test my TappedOut decks on Untap.in and I'm going to try some testing with Liliana Vess in the mainboard in place of my 1-of Prognostic Sphinx, as those two can kind of trade off duties...finding me something I want. I'll need to see which helps me the most. I'll pop by your list and leave some input as well later on today. Thanks!

Loco-Motive - I should learn to read the complete deck lists! xD My bad

I use Defend the Hearth in my temur deck. and it works wonders, yeah there is no other benefit, BUT, it does STALL the game for a turn, lol I suppose the benefit is that you don't lose 8+ life points haha or chump block with your cratures. Its just an annoying trick is all. May not be suited for a Sultai Deck though, hard removal or bounce will be more effective.

How do you fair against aggro or temur decks? what do you side in against these decks?

Probably his Drown in Sorrow, Bile Blight, maybe Thoughtseize. I think the deck has enough answers post SB for the aggro matchup.

How have you found your aetherspouts? Ive decided to take it out of my SB to put more drown in sorrows for the following reason : when would I side in aetherspouts? Against aggro or tokens. Then, doesnt drown in sorrow do the job even better? Yep.

Hey, EssTea -

AEtherspouts is just an under-the-radar BOMB, I've found. I don't know why, but in Game 1, no one really expects it. I think they're waiting for me to drop a Perilous Vault or Whelming Wave or something...I dunno. But Aetherspouts wrecks stuff. What I've seen in testing - against aggro, it actually makes opponents put everything on the bottom. I really don't know why, they just do. It's weird. Against Abzan mid-range, it gets rid of bird tokens and such and they'll usually put their birds, rhinos and coursers on top. Then...I WEALTH them.

After Game 1, it actually slows the opponent up. They don't want to "swing out" when I have 5 mana up and could potentially send everything back to their library, so they'll start swinging with half their team. It's kinda sweet to watch. :)

I don't like Drown in Sorrow in the main, opting for more Bile Blight instead, because in some match-ups, Drown is just a dead card. Against Abzan, dead card. Monsters, dead card. I'd rather have Bile, as it affects more immediately and can help my Courser kill something as it's blocking.

Thoughtseize doesn't come in against aggro as I can't afford the health nick. I only bring it in against control and then, only sometimes, against slower game like Abzan...

Aetherspouts - one of the better cards in this deck in breaking their tempo.

I tend to put 4 Bile Blight main board because they are just so good. I also run 1 more Silence the Believers for more removal. The only problem I'm having is getting the combo off. A lot of the times I get to the point when i hard cast Villainous Wealth. Other wise I love this deck. +1

Thanks, EpicLands, and thanks for the +1!

I used to run 3 Bile Blight main board, however, I've since threw 1 into the sideboard in favor of jamming in 1 Prognostic Sphinx into the deck. He's a good blocker, a little hard to remove at times, and solves a problem that you brought up in that he can help me search for the combo pieces of Dictate of Karametra or a Villainous Wealth (or just a spot removal that I really need to get my hands on). I've really liked him in here.

I like Silence the Believers as well but I'm content with 1 in the side and 1 in the main. It's great removal, but it's still a 4-mana removal. There's enough good removal in here in Downfall, Bile and Charm to tide me over. I usually bring in the 2nd Silence in game 2 against Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker or some crazy bestow decks.

Usually I brew a deck and play it for 2 weeks and then brew something completely different to play with. I've been running this Wealth deck for a month now, tweaking here and there, but finding that I love playing this card so much that this just might be "my deck" I run at FNMs for some months to come...been a while since I've dedicated myself to a card in Magic like I have with Wealth. :)

I am going to try removing a Silence the Believers for a Prognostic Sphinx to help look for the combo, thanks Loco-Motive.

hey so i built something similar to this, but no matter what i do i can't beat aggro decks of any kind. do you think you could help me out with some adjustments i can make so i don't just want to concede every time i see a turn one creature.

Hi there, AndrewAckerman,

there's quite a number of matches I'll see where there's a turn 1 Monastery Swiftspear or a Gnarled Scarhide. Sure, the first feeling when you see that is dread...because sometimes that Sylvan Caryatid can't always blocks it...they're gonna get pumped, you're going to lose your mana source, etc. It sucks...but there are some defenses to it in this mainboard. The 2 Bile Blights, the 2 AEtherspouts to kind of reset your opponent, and the Sultai Charm work as good removal on turn 3. There are ways to stabilize. You have to get "comfortable" knowing that against those matches, you're going to take some hits early on. On some of the game-1 matches, I sometimes win them, but my life is in the low single digits.

If you don't win game-1, and that's ok, you board in your Drown in Sorrows and other removal to help out, siding out your heavier cards like In Garruk's Wake and Garruk, Apex Predator. I will say I win more matches against aggro than I do lose them.

Does that help you out at all?

Game 1 may never go to you....but that doesn't mean you lose the MATCH.

December 8, 2014 12:41 p.m.

That does help a lot. I decided to move a few anti-aggro cards into the main board, thanks. if you would take a look that would be awesome Young Money

Reading your Update from Dec. 10, 2014:

Its funny to see a meta game at a FNM with 3 Villainous Wealth deck :D

That doesnt happen where I live, small store(average of 20 players) mostly plp playing abzan or temur(I guess I will see some sultai reanimators today)

December 12, 2014 1:09 p.m.

hey its me again, I think Whelming Wave is a somewhat under whelming card for this build. It hits all your creatures and sorcery speed is less than ideal. i would recommend Polymorphist's Jest over it if you feel you need additional pseudo-boardwipes. Also i would like to inform you that while playing a this build i have gotten an incredible amount of milage out of Kruphix, God of Horizons it is a spectacular alternative to Dictate of Karametra. Because Deicide is a real card I would recommend going one dictate one Kruphix.

Hmmmm......f***it. I'll give the god a try tonight. ;)

December 12, 2014 6:09 p.m.

yay i don't think you'll have any regrets, and if you do they will be worth it for the smile you'll get when you wealth 2 Dig Through Times and a Jace's Ingenuity and don't have to discard. :)

December 12, 2014 6:46 p.m.

downside: its not instant speed

upside: no max hand size, can be a win con, harder to get rid of, doesn't help opponent.

Awesome deck ! Didn't know it can be done in a playable manner :) Played this today. Wasn't such a good version, though. +1 for you.

Loco-Motive says... #24

Many, many thanks, Banialuki. It's indeed playable and it's been competitive at my FNM. What's fun is that I'll go up against decks that will certainly defeat me, but they still sweat each time I have a ton of mana and draw a card for turn... lol. Sometimes I just need to land one Wealth that totally take over the game.

I like it (I too play sultai control), but I've never been a huge AEtherspouts fan. It feels like it will get them game 1 but then fold in any game they know about it in, but maybe you're finding different results. I'm a big fan of Whelming Wave for tempo control as it comes down a turn faster usually. My build is much more creature light though, so I lose less tempo by using it I suppose. +1
