Very cool! How do you fare against combo decks like TES/ANT? Also, what are your good and bad matchups?

aeonstoremyliver Thanks for looking at my deck. The worst possible match ups for this deck are combo decks like Legacy Storm or Ad Nauseam decks. That is what the sideboard mostly hates against. In an attempt to bump up the cost of their spells and keep them from comboing, I run a lot of cards that increase spell cost like Thorn of Amethyst and Sphere of Resistance. I am considering putting Raven's Crime in the sideboard in an attempt to tear apart my opponents hand. It's good against combo. Generally it has a pretty good match up against most other decks in the meta. I haven't played the deck outside of my group, but the only deck that can consistently beat it (other than combo) are decks that run A LOT of basic lands such as Miracles. If you feel like you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Certainly! Krosan Grip can hit Counterbalance. Good call.

Yeah, I was going to suggest Raven's Crime for Storm combo decks. It would be brutal in this build! I run mono 12 Post and my only option against TES is Chalice of the Void set at one. In my RDW, I use Pyrostatic Pillar and Eidolon of the Great Revel. Pillar may be a good SB option for you as well.

I like your lone Forest to fetch so Krosan Grip is viable through Blood Moon, as Moon can ruin your day.

aeonstoremyliver I'm glad you agree about Raven's Crime. I know of Eidolon of the Great Revel since I run Burn in Modern. I dont really feel Pyrostatic Pillar would be good in this deck. I would be dealing a lot of damage to myself since every single spell in the deck is less than 3 CMC. I like to dredge a lot with this deck and then cast Life from the Loam to grab lands back.

Blood Moon is one of the worst things this deck can encounter. Another thing that doesn't shut down the deck but severely slows it down is Chalice of the Void. When its on my opponents field for 1 I cant play Manabond or Exploration. When it's for 2 I can't cast Life from the Loam and i have to play only land I top deck.

Good point about Pillar...

That's the thing with Chalice. It also shuts down almost a quarter of my deck it I set it at one. But, TES/ANT is nuts and Chalice is my only out. I get what you're saying, tho.

aeonstoremyliver, The issue I'm having right now with running Raven's Crime is that it requires black mana, and there are only five cards in the entire deck that produces black mana. Four of those cards are artifacts, and unless I am missing a crucial part of the deck, I cannot return artifacts from the graveyard if I dredge them away.

April 13, 2015 12:02 a.m.

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth fixes that problem. :-D

aeonstoremyliver I forgot about Urborg... That's a great idea!

aeonstoremyliver thoughts on running Academy Ruins or Buried Ruin in the mainboard? I kind of like Buried Ruin cause it allows me to return Mox Diamond, Zuran Orb, and Sphere of Resistance to my hand unlike Academy Ruins which puts them on top of the deck. That's still not bad though.

April 13, 2015 12:28 a.m.

Academy Ruins requires a splash, which could open up some SB options, however Buried Ruin doesn't require additional color investments. You can also return Ruin w Loam.

So, why aren't you running Crucible of Worlds?

MADMatt7777 says... #12

aeonstoremyliver It can open up some sideboard options, but I'm already invested in three colors and it's hard enough to get black as it is. I think I'll just stick with a solid 3 color build.

I've seen quite a few decks run 1 Crucible of Worlds in the main deck, but I've never seen them run more than 1. It's a solid card in this deck, but mostly in game 2 and 3. It really only works well when I have a land accelerant like Exploration or Manabond on the field. Although it can be useful in some sticky situations without those, like if I wanted to Wasteland two things but don't have a Life from the Loam. I just don't know what I would take out for it if I decided to put it.

Splash blue for Treasure Hunt and this deck with become much more consistent. I run 4 copies in my Glacial Fog and that is my baby... It also allows you to run more lands. And, I would recommend running 4 manabond and 2 exploration instead of the other way around. Comboing multiple Tranquil Thickets into dredge triggers with a manabond in play allows you to drop nearly your whole deck worth of lands on the board. Obviously your deck is on a much more expensive budget than mine, but I think those suggestions should help.

This is beautiful. I really dig the idea of a land based deck. I think that Raven's Crime could be really good here.

enpc I'm glad you like it. I really enjoy playing this deck and it is surprisingly competitive. If you look online there are tons of cases where it has placed in the top 8 of high libel events like SCG invitationals and other similar tournaments. I have really been departing running Raven's Crime. My main issue with running it is that I'd have to splash more black than I already run and there really isn't a whole lot of room to mess with the color production even though the deck runs 34 lands.

If you are thinking about Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Vampire Hexmage is a nice way to get out a 20/20 indestructible flyer on turn 2.

MADMatt7777 says... #18

DaftVader I do agree that doing the Vampire Hexmage and Dark Depths combo is indeed fast, but I feel like it would be much less consistent in this style deck. After I get my Loam engine going, I usually keep dredging. That's why Thespian's Stage works well. I can return a stage with loam, but I cant return a hexmage. Similarly, I feel like to consistently do the combo, I'd have to go full into black and not just splash it. I don't even know what I'd take out for black, since everything in here is generally always helpful.

How bad does Price of Progress hurt you? From the way the list looks it looks like it could end games on the spot for a mere 2 mana, but it might be different in game which is why I'm asking.

MADMatt7777 says... #20

fuster, Price of Progress is a big issue. It can kill me very easily. Luckily Burn isn't very big in the Legacy meta right now so I doubt I will see it that much. I've been contemplating putting one Zuran Orb in the sideboard in case I do come across a burn deck. I'm still unsure though.

June 12, 2015 12:51 a.m.

fuster says... #21

If you aren't playing against burn then I guess you don't have to worry about dedicating a slot for that matchup. What do you pack against combo? I see a Sphere and Trinisphere in the side but I feel like 2 and 3 mana is just a bit too slow unless you can ramp those artifacts out on turn 1. I've actually died on the play to turn 1 storm with 2cmc hate cards in hand believe it or not.

June 12, 2015 1:01 a.m.

MADMatt7777 says... #22

fuster, It is surprisingly common for me to have up to 3 mana available before my opponent even takes a turn. Even if I can't get a Trinisphere out turn 1 or two, a turn 1 Sphere of Resistance really does do a lot of damage to storm. I haven't really gotten to test against the storm match up very well because nobody in my play group has the deck or is willing to practice with it even if I proxy it up for them.

How do you get those cards out turn 1? Exploration and mox diamond I presume?

fuster, That is correct

Maybe you could make use of Scapeshift? Gets lands to your graveyard for Life from the Loam and lets you search up any replacing non-basic lands you want.
